Careers in Physical Anthropology
Academic Positions
There are many academic careers for appropriately trained physical anthropologists. The most common and traditional job openings are found in anthropology departments in colleges and universities. University departments of genetics, zoology, and biology also offer potential employment. So do community colleges and professional schools. Many schools of medicine rely on biological anthropologists to teach the gross anatomy of the human body to medical and paramedical students. Currently, around one in eight American physical anthropologists has some professional affiliation with a medical school, usually in a department of anatomy. A detailed appreciation of the range of jobs held by physical anthropologists can be gained by studying the membership directory of the AAPA, published every December in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology. To obtain an AAPA pamphlet providing additional details on careers in physical anthropology, contact Dr. Mark Teaford, Chair AAPA Career Development Committee, (Mark F. Physical anthropology is a biological science that deals with the adaptations, variability, and evolution of human beings and their living and fossil relatives. Because it studies human biology in the context of human culture and behavior, physical anthropology is also a social science. The AAPA is the world's leading professional organization for physical anthropologists. Formed by 83 charter members in 1930, the AAPA now has an international membership of over 1,700. The Association's annual meetings draw more than a thousand scientists and students from all over the world. This program description is listed near the bottom of the scroll-down list in Fastlane. Dissertation proposals should reference NSF 01-113 - Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants. Target Dates and Deadlines Target dates are just that - targets, not deadlines. Often, there is a significant degree of flex in these dates, the amount being largely determined by the specific date of the next panel meeting. If you need additional time prior to submission to the physical anthropology program feel free to contact the program officer. If a proposal is for a cross-cutting competition, or may be eligible for co-review with another program, extensions may not be allowable; again feel free to contact the program officer.

NON-ACADEMIC CAREERS IN PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY
The purpose of this brochure is to inform physical anthropology graduate students of career opportunities in non-academic settings. In a concern with the future professional careers of students completing their graduate educations in physical anthropology (particularly at the doctoral level), the American Association of Physical Anthropologists has established a standing committee devoted to career development. This brochure is one of the Committee's educational efforts to inform the student constituency of the Association as to the nature and diversity of professional careers in addition to those in anthropology departments in colleges and universities. There are many academic careers for appropriately trained physical anthropologists. In addition to the most traditional, that of faculty member of an anthropology department, they involve academic affiliations with community colleges and a number of different non-anthropology academic units within four year colleges and universities. These include medical schools; indeed, currently one in eight American physical anthropologists has some formal professional affiliation with a medical school, most frequently in departments of anatomy. Departments of genetics, zoology, and biological sciences are also logical academic units in which one might find physical anthropologists.

    Dr. Michael Spence
Lawson Professor of Canadian Archaeology, Department of Anthropology and London Museum of Archaeology (PhD Southern Illinois University) Current Research Interests: Since I am active in two areas (Ontario and Mexico) and in two subfields of anthropology (archaeology and physical anthropology), my ongoing research projects are rather diverse. I shall briefly outline each below. Hopewell Silver: I have recently completed and have in press work involving the identification of native silver sources used on Middle Woodland Hopewell and Hopewell-related sites and the implications of that sourcing for our understanding of Middle Woodland trade and social networks. 2. Praying Mantis This small Iroquoian village (ca. 1000 AD) in the Byron area of London was completely excavated by the London Museum of Archaeology. Working with a number of my students, I excavated the two burials that were found. The resulting data will be combined with data from three other similar sites that I have analyzed to reconstruct the social structure and burial practices of these early farming residents of Ontario. I have prepared a detailed technical report on the Praying Mantis burials, to satisfy government and professional requirements. I will now write a general, publicly oriented version of that report, leaving out the technical jargon, tables of measurements, etc. Both reports, technical and general, will be given to Oneida nation, which will assume responsibility for the reburial of the bones.
