162. The Computer Revolution In Philosophy
An online (scanned) version of the seminal 1978 book by Aaron Sloman.
http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/cogaff/crp/
Out of print book now online: THE COMPUTER REVOLUTION IN PHILOSOPHY:
Philosophy, science and models of mind.
By Aaron Sloman This book, published in 1978 by Harvester Press and Humanities Press, has been out of print for many years, and is now online. A photocopy of the original book can be ordered as explained below The table of contents is below.
Philosophical relevance
Some parts of the book are dated whereas others are still relevant both to the scientific study of mind and to philosophical questions about the aims of science, the nature of theories and explanations, varieties of concept formation, and to questions about the nature of mind. In particular, Chapter 2 analyses the variety of scientific advances ranging from shallow discoveries of new laws and correlations to deep science which extends our ontology, i.e. our understanding of what is possible, rather than just our understanding of what happens when. Insofar as AI explores designs for possible mental mechanisms, possible mental architectures, and possible minds using those mechanisms and architectures, it is primarily a contribution to deep science, in contrast with most empirical psychology which is shallow science, exploring correlations. This "design stance" approach to the study of mind was very different from the "intentional stance" being developed by Dan Dennett at the same time, expounded in his 1978 book

    Introduction
Doubt could be expressed that a special section on late 19th century mathematics, or, more specifically, on Victorian mathematics, was an appropriate place for a lecture on 19th century logic. Most 19th century scholars would have been of the opinion that philosophers are responsible for research on logic. On the other hand, the history of late 19th century logic indicates clearly a very dynamic development instigated not by philosophers, but by mathematicians. The central feature of this development was the emergence of what has been called the "new logic'', "mathematical logic'', "symbolic logic'', or, since 1904, "logistics''. This new logic came from Great Britain, and was created by mathematicians in the second half of the 19th century, finally becoming a mathematical subdiscipline in the early 20th century. This development is, thus, at the heart of Victorian mathematics. The 100th anniversary of the death of Charles L. Dodgson, i. e., Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) was the motivation behind this special section on late 19th century mathematics given at the Commonwealth University in Ottawa which has just commemorated its 150th anniversary. Carroll's well-known books on logic

When we express ourselves with words, thoughts or feelings, we are under the impression that it is our mind and intellect that generate our thinking. It is true that we do have "thoughts" and use our "intellect" projecting around us "thought-forms" and psychic expressions of all kinds... But, all of these are passing illusions and realities, projections of our ego desires and wishes. The essays on this website are based on personal experiences and intensive research of ancient Egyptian and Greek religions and mystery schools, as well as modern mystical and esoteric traditions such as the Rosicrucian and Templar Traditions. These articles are intended to encourage readers interested in Hermetic, Gnostic and mystical philosophies to differentiate between our Real Nature which is rooted in Absolute Consciousness and the vehicle serving it... which is the ego and the five senses. Through these essays, we will try to encourage those of you who earnestly want to explore the inner dimensions of Consciousness and cross the threshold of the "Unknown" within oneself... and pass through the Portal of Initiation where the words

The First Spiritual Temple is a nondenominational Christian Spiritualist Church, founded by Marcellus Seth Ayer on June 28, 1883. Our Christian faith is rooted within the philosophy rather than the modern movement's religion of Spiritualism. Our Spiritualism is both universal and ancient. We seek to understand the many and varied forms of Spiritualism which have existed upon our planet from the moment we stepped into physical form. We perceive Spiritualism as the process whereby all religions came into being as a result of communication with God and God's Kingdom of Spirit. Our fundamental doctrine states that God is Spirit, we are Spirit, our loved ones, in Spirit, are Spirit, and that is how we are all connected. Marcellus Ayer founded our Church in order to address the growing needs of people to understand God, Spirit, Death and Dying, Jesus Christ, and the Bible in a more practical and working manner. He stood firm upon the highest ethics and standards in working with Spirit. We proudly carry that banner today. As part of our ministry, the First Spiritual Temple conducts the

Theosophy - a synthesis of science, religion and philosophy A brief history of Theosophy.
Theosophy as known to the modern world was founded by the Russian initiate Helena Petrovna Blavatsky in New York in 1875 as an attempt to spread divine truth to the intellectually advanced part of humanity. However, "the Ancient Wisdom" has always existed in the world, either openly as Theosophy is taught today, or in the past, in Egypt, Greece and Atlantis where there were great temples and initiation schools run by the Earth's Hierarchy, or hidden, as in the Middle Ages amongst the alchemists, Rosicrucians and Freemasons, who were persecuted by both the clergy and the secular powers who (rightly) felt their power threatened by the truths which these hidden societies represented. What is Theosophy?
Theosophy is "A synthesis of science, religion and philosophy", and its motto is: "There is no religion higher than Truth". Practically, Theosophy presents itself today as a vast spiritual and cosmological system which seeks to investigate and explain Cosmos and man's role herein, both on the basis of occult research (research based on extrasensory perception, be it clairvoyance, clairvoyance, visions, telepathically received messages or memories or visions retrieved through hypnotic regression, i.e. from higher states of consciousness) which is taught by a number of Theosophical groups (see the links list: click here ) around the world.

Constructivism does not claim to have made earth-shaking inventions in the area of education; it merely claims to provide a solid conceptual basis for some of the things that, until now, inspired teachers had to do without theoretical foundation.
    E. Von Glasersfeld (1995) S ocrates liked to work with students. His approach essentially consisted of leading them through a series of questions in order to promote critical thinking. On one occasion, the philosopher purportedly led a group of students to a difficult conclusion through his Socratic method. Socrates then pointed out that, since he had reported no facts, the students must have known the conclusion all along. Socrates is not generally associated with constructivist philosophy. Nonetheless, this anecdote highlights the fact that discussions which link epistemology and learning have been taking place for thousands of years. From the perspective of psychology, epistemology considers the genesis and the nature of knowledge and includes learning (Ernest, 1995). Knowledge, its nature and how we come to know, are essential considerations for constructivists. Von Glasersfeld describes constructivism as a "theory of knowledge with roots in philosophy, psychology and cybernetics" (p.162). In the constructivist perspective, knowledge is constructed by the individual through his interactions with his environment.

    Christian Philosophy
    Made Simple
Drawing from over twenty-five centuries of the Western Philosophical tradition, I have presented the most common philosophical arguments supporting the existence of God. Many people today, Christians in particular, are never exposed to this rich philosophical tradition, which started with the Ancient Greeks such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, and came into fullness with great Christian minds such as St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Anselm, and others.
These Web Pages are made specifically for those Christians who are interested in learning about philosophy, but were afraid or too busy to tackle this fairly complex subject. So, for all of those Ph.Ds. in cyberspace, forgive the simplicity of this presentation, for it is not geared to you!
