Faith and reason
Welcome to Bede's Library - reasonable apologetics and other matters
Here you will find my writings on faith, science, history and philosophy as well as loads of annotated links and book reviews. The aim of Bede's Library is show how a person from a scientific background came to Christianity and has had his faith strengthened rather than weakened by argument and reason. It is intended for anyone who is interested in these subjects and wants to see how having faith does not mean sacrificing intellectual integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions Spiritualist Churches Common Concerns about Churchgoing Is Spiritualism a Cult? Some Thoughts on Meditation Spiritualist Basics Links to other places What people think of this site Cathedral of the Pines Who's web site is this? About the Spiritualist Religion Page
The term "Spiritualism" has been used very loosely, covering a wide variety of psychic phenomena, philosophy, and spirit communication. This site is focused on the religion of Spiritualism. Spiritualism is a wonderfully non-dogmatic religion, science, and philosophy. Spiritualism invites you to doubt, question, and "prove it" for yourself. Without making you change your religion and sell everything you own. However, many people are unclear as to what Spiritualism is really about. How can it possibly be a religion, philosophy and a SCIENCE? How can you make a religion out of "psychic readings"? Do Spiritualists believe in God, or is this just some satanic thing?

Forum for the Fundamentalist Review of Science, Art and Philosophy AGRICOLA 2000 Cultivating the land is fundamental to existence. The good health of land needs to be maintained with care to nourish the seeds into good harvest. Neglected land yields only weeds. It is the living generation's task to keep the human culture healthy, free of weeds, wild shoots and suckers to ensure it will provide the strong and pristine foundation to build on by generations to come. The harmony of good foundation with superstructure is the guarantee of endurance. In our world and time the personal insecurity is rampant, there are too many grievances, too few opportunities, too much of bizarre and violent, too little beauty and contentment. The good common sense exists only in memories. Poor leadership, rampant fringe interests, socio-economic instability and weapons of global destruction pose too many threats to the individual, human collective and culture. The culture and world we live in need to be reviewed, weeded and renewed.

The Dilemma Facing Science
W hat we currently perceive to be the laws of nature allows us to follow the evolution of the universe back to its beginning, a moment some 10 to 20 billion years ago when the universe was infinitely hot and dense. However, our understanding of this moment is incomplete, for we question the applicability of these laws at extreme temperature and density. Since we cannot describe that initial condition, we cannot be certain such a moment even existed. At present, science can only describe the initial conditions of the universe at a time one trillionth of a second following the moment of infinite temperature, a point when the universe first began to expand. The observations we make have yet to allow us a look past the moment at which the expansion began. "All physical theories... ought to lend themselves to so simple a description that even a child could understand them." Albert Einstein Science attempts to explain anything we observe in terms of scientific principles that are in turn explained by deeper principles. Following this chain of explanations, we are led to laws of nature that cannot be explained within the boundaries of contemporary science. If science is to fully explain that which it seeks to explain, then the boundaries of science must change. If it does not, science, even at its best, will always remain incomplete. Although current science does not understand the cause behind the creation of the universe, one thing is for certain. Whatever that cause is, its ESSENCE must underlie all phenomena of the universe. This statement needs no argument. It is self-evident. Since that is the case, then it is up to us to take the steps necessary in becoming conscious enough to observe that essence.

"The great thing however is, in the show of the temporal and the transient to recognize the substance which is immanent and the eternal which is present. For the work of Reason (which is synonymous with the Idea) when considered in its own actuality, is to simultaneously enter external existence and emerge with an infinite wealth of forms, phenomena and phases - a multiplicity that envelops its essential rational kernel with a motley outer rind with which our ordinary consciousness is earliest at home. It is this rind that the Concept must penetrate before Reason can find its own inward pulse and feel it still beating even in the outward phases. But this infinite variety of circumstances which is formed in this element of externality by the light of the rational essence shining in it - all this infinite material, with its regulatory laws - is not the object of philosophy....To comprehend

Defines transhumanism as a philosophy or belief to improve oneself, and exceed existing biological and social limits through the use of rational methods like technology and science.
http://www.educa.com/transcedo/etrans.htm
Transcedo,
Dutch Transhumanist Society
The Lagoon Nebula
What is transhumanism.
Transhumanism is the philosophy or belief that it is good to improve oneself, physically and mentally, and that it is good not to accept the existing biological and social limits, and that these limits can be overcome through the use of rational methods like technology and science.
Just like humanism transhumanism attaches great value to rationalism and the fate of humanity, and sees no reason for a belief in supernatural forces arranging our destiny, but it goes beyond this and spurs us to continue our development, beyond merely the human stage of evolution.
To a degree, all people believe in transhumanism, which is to say all people are to a degree transhumans. Since the discovery of fire and stone tools, humans have been developing technologies to improve upon their initially naked and primitive existence. Since the beginning, humans have tried in ever increasing ways to control their environment. In regard to this human characteristic, present humans are similar to our early ancestors.
Transhumanists are people who have developed a great aversion to non-rational methods. They choose rational methods and insights over irrational explanations and assumptions based on a belief. Transhumans are therefore atheists. They foresee that issues such as environmental problems and energy shortages will be solved by newly developed technologies, and not by the imposition of ever more restrictions on society. They realize that rational thinking and the resulting technological and scientific progress will not only make life more pleasant, but will also be necessary to "survive", as a species as well as individually.
