Welcome to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, which was designed from its inception (September 1995) as a dynamic reference work. In a dynamic reference work, each entry is maintained and kept up to date by an expert or group of experts in the field. All entries and updates are refereed by the members of a distinguished Editorial Board before they are made public. Consequently, our dynamic reference work is responsive to new research. You can, however, cite fixed editions which are made on a quarterly basis and stored in our Archives. Thank you for your patience as our Encyclopedia develops. About Free Software
Free software is a matter of freedom: people should be free to use software in all the ways that are socially useful. Software differs from material objectssuch as chairs, sandwiches, and gasolinein that it can be copied and changed much more easily. These possibilities make software as useful as it is; we believe software users should be able to make use of them.

A historical and thematic approach to the beliefs and ideas of Judaism from the post-Biblical period through the modern era provides students with a rich experience in Jewish thought and history. The ability of the students to read the texts in their original language enhances their understanding of the development of Jewish thought. The curriculum is divided into four sections:

Martin Buber Jewish thought in the time of the Mishnah and the Talmud. This section covers the thought of the Sages in the Midrash, the Apocrypha and Pseudo-epigrapha in the time of the Second Temple, the Dead Sea scrolls, early Christian thought and early Jewish mystics. The approach to these topics is pluralistic and students learn about the thought embodied in the various documents in the context of their place in history. Thus for example, Philo, the first Jewish philosopher from the 1st century, is studied together with Greek philosophy.
A detail of the Zodiac of the Ancient Synagogue, Beit-Alfa Jewish Medieval Philosophy (9th to 15th centuries).
