Description
Lithium is an antipsychotic, antimanic medication used for those with Affective Disorder, Bipolar; Bipolar Disorder Depression; Mania . (Lithium medications may also go by the brand names: Eskalith, Eskalith-Cr, Lithane, Lithium, Lithobid, Lithonate, Lithotabs.)
Pharmacology
Lithium is an element of the alkali-metal group. Preclinical studies have shown that lithium alters sodium transport in nerve and muscle cells and effects a shift toward intraneuronal metabolism of catecholamines, but the specific biochemical mechanism of lithium action in mania is unknown.
Indications and Usage
Lithium carbonate is indicated in the treatment of manic episodes of manic-depressive illness . Maintenance therapy prevents or diminishes the intensity of subsequent episodes in those manic-depressive patients with a history of mania.

W elcome to the Department of Pharmacology at the Univeristy of Colorado Health Sciences Center which is located in Denver, Colorado, on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. Our pharmacology department has established and maintained a position as one of the most recognized and well-respected pharmacology departments world-wide. The UCHSC Department of Pharmacology has been ranked number one in NIH funding; it has been rated within the top five pharmacology departments in terms of scientific impact by the Institute for Scientific Information, and it has one of the top-rated Pharmacology Graduate Training Programs in the Nation. Continued.....
The graduate program offers a multidisciplinary approach to training in cellular and molecular pharmacology, signal transduction, neuropharmacology, biochemistry, and molecular structure, as well as opportunities in the blossoming field of bioinformatics. The graduate program also provides the opportunity for hands-on training in a variety of state-of-the-art laboratory techniques, including transgenics, gene chip arrays NMR mass spectrometry computational pharmacology , and x-ray crystallography . The mission of the UCHSC Department of Pharmacology is to provide individuals a broad and solid foundation of the principles of pharmacology, and to train them to become critical thinkers who can generate experimentally testable hypotheses, and who draw significant conclusions from the results of their ongoing research . Upon completion of their PhD degree in Pharmacology, our students will be prepared to make important contributions to scientific research and to the education of future generations of pharmacologists and medical, dental, and graduate students. Pharmacology
Antimanic Agent Lithium is a monovalent cation which belongs to the group of alkali metals together with sodium, potassium and other elements with which it shares some of its properties. The mechanism whereby lithium controls manic episodes and possibly influences affective disorders is not yet known. Unlike other antimanic agents, it does not possess general sedative properties. There is evidence, however, that lithium alters sodium transport and may interfere with ion exchange mechanisms and nerve conduction. Fluid and electrolyte metabolism are believed to be altered in affective disorders and this may be related to the therapeutic action of lithium. Lithium enhances the uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin into the synaptosomes, thus reducing their action. It reduces release of norepinephrine from synaptic vesicles and inhibits production of cyclic AMP. Lithium is inactive in most screening psychopharmacological tests but it produces marked potentiation of amphetamine hyperactivity in animals. It does not appear to protect against the action of stimulant and convulsive drugs and produces only slight potentiation of CNS depressants.

About the organiser
1 - 6 August 2004
Incorporating the Annual Scientific Meeting of ASCEPT Introduction from the Chair
Dear Colleagues You will find many reasons to register for CPT2004 and I am delighted to draw your attention to the major features of this Congress:
  • CPT2004 will present an exciting program spearheaded by over 120 invited speakers. The program will feature a stream devoted to late breaking hot topics addressing issues of major significance that emerge in the lead up to the Congress. Apart from plenary lectures, invited symposia, special interest meetings and contributed poster sessions there will be two other initiatives. A series of specialised workshops will be held on the day before the main program begins, and the Foundation of Clinical Pharmacology Series will offer early morning sessions each day for those wishing to get an overview of the basis of our discipline from the leaders in the field. Over 1500 delegates are expected from around the world, providing a truly international forum for the exchange of information and ideas.

University of Bergen
Department of Pharmacology
Norwegian The Department of Pharmacology is an independent unit within the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bergen and is located on the second floor of Armauer Hansens building. One of the department's clinical pharmacologists have office in the main building of Haukeland Hospital. The Department has teaching responsibilities in pharmacology for students in medicine, dentistry and dental hygiene. Additionally, two courses in pharmacology have been offered at the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The Department also provides training for doctor degree candidates and for postdoctoral fellows. The Department of Pharmacology maintains well-equiped analytical laboratories. These include instruments for liquid- and gas chromatography including LC-MS and GC-MS. Capillary electrophoresis with laser fluorescence detection has been in operation since 1994. The instruments available are well suited for the qualitative and quantitative determination of unknown substances. Most of the instruments have been financed by grants from many private funds and foundations. Included in our facilities is a well-equiped laboratory for celle culture. The modern equipment and our expertise in their use provides the basis for our main experimental projects. Where to find us Executive committee Locus Homocysteine
