Section 01 - Safe Harbor Petroglyphs Description
On the lower Susquehanna, just below Safe Harbor Dam, the rocks whisper stories of the people of this land. Rock art of long ago generations still survives. Will it survive for the generations of the future?
By Paul A. Nevin
For hundreds, if not thousands of years before the Europeans came to this land, Native people carved images of humans, birds, animals and their tracks, as well as other designs into the rocks that lay in and along the Susquehanna River. The carvings, or 'petroglyphs', conveyed information perhaps describing a tribe's boundaries or hunting grounds, or telling of the people who lived there or who had passed through, or signifying events or sacred places. Sometimes figures were carved directly over top of others, suggesting that many generations contributed to this legacy. The messages must have been important. The carving, done on hard rock with stone tools, took too much effort to have been done on a whim. And to carve graffiti on the rocks would be to desecrate Mother Earth. Perhaps 1,000 petroglyphs could once be found among several sites on the river between Columbia, Pa. and Port Deposit, Md. The new settlers in this land noticed them and over the years occasionally recorded and studied them, but also removed them for garden ornaments and broke them up for rock dams and fishing weirs.

Dinosaur Art By Native Americans (Petroglyphs) Evidence that Dinosaurs and Humans co-existed Natural Bridges National Park, Utah Dr. Dennis Swift, brought to our attention, petroglyphs under one of the spectacular bridges in White Rock Canyon within Natural Bridges National Monument near Blanding, Utah. The lower left photo shows men pointing to where the etchings are located. The park literature attributes the petroglyphs to the Anasazi who inhabited the area from approximately A.D. 400 to A.D. 1300. Can you see the dino? A book on Indian rock art sold at the park visitors center says, "There is a petroglyph in Natural Bridges National Monument that bears a startling resemblance to a dinosaur, specifically a Brontosaurus, with a long tail and neck, small head and all." (Prehistoric Indians, Barnes and Pendleton, 1995, p.201) The desert varnish, which indicates age, is especially heavy over this section.

The resulting publication reported as "fact" that "some prehistoric man made a pictograph of a dinosaur on the walls of this canyon..."

Ute Mountain Tribal Park in
Southwest Colorado
Part of the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Reservation, the Ute Mountain Tribal Park has been set aside to preserve remnants of the Ancestral Puebloan and Ute cultures.

The Park encompasses approximately 125,000 acres around a 25 mile stretch of the Mancos River. Within the park are hundreds of surface sites and cliff dwellings, Ancestral Puebloan petroglyphs, and historic Ute wall paintings and petroglyphs.
The Tribal Park is operated as a primitive area in order to protect its cultural and environmental resources. Emphasis is placed on experiencing the natural setting. Tours are guided by Ute Indians with a broad knowledge of Ute and Ancestral Puebloan cultures. The tours include Ute history and rock art, surface sites and cliff dwellings. The full day tour (which is highly recommended) visits four magnificent cliff dwellings and requires a three-mile walk on unpaved trails and scaling ladders. In order to protect the fragile resources, self-guided tours are not permitted.
VISITING the TRIBAL PARK
Tours begin at Tribal Park headquarters
located approximately 20 miles south of Cortez on Highway 666. Round-trip drive from the Visitor Center, on gravel and dirt roads, is 80 miles for the full-day trip, and 40 miles for the half-day trip.

by Dave Yanko ST. VICTOR Rock carvings located just outside this village are worth a visit when travelling in the Big Muddy Badlands region of south-central Saskatchewan. They're one of the most interesting, if puzzling, examples of petroglyphs on the northern plains. - courtesy Tim Jones Image of a grizzly-bear paw at St. Victor The St. Victor Petroglyphs were carved into horizontal sandstone at the top of a cliff. They include representations of animal, bird and human tracks foot and hand prints as well as several symbols, and a few human and animal figures. No one knows who carved the 'glyphs', or why. Saskatoon archaeologist Tim Jones, who has co-authored with his wife Louise a report on the topic, can't offer a good guess as to how old they are, either, except to note that the subjects carved show no evidence of being created in any other than prehistoric times. Tim Jones "It's almost as though (the St. Victor site) is hiding the secret of its age and authorship," says Jones, who's the executive director of the Saskatchewan Archaeological Society.

Norway World Heritage Sites in Norway Set in the natural landscape of Sogn og Fjordane, the wooden church of Urnes (the "stavkirke"), built during the 12th and 13th centuries, is an exceptional vestige of Scandinavian wooden architecture. The church brings together traces of Celtic art, Viking traditions and Romanesque spatial structures. Bryggen, the old wharf of Bergen, is a reminder of the town's importance as part of the Hanseatic League's trading empire from the 14th to the mid-16th century. Many fires, the last in 1955, have ravaged the beautiful wooden houses of Bryggen but its main structure has been preserved. Many of the remaining 58 buildings are now used as artists' studios. Located on a mountainous site, its history is linked to the exploitation of copper mines, discovered in the 17th century and used for 333 years until 1977. Completely rebuilt after its destruction by Swedish troops in 1679, the city includes some eighty wooden houses, most of which are grouped around courtyards. Many of them still retain their dark pitch log façades which give the town a medieval aspect.

The Ancient Petroglyphs of Gobustan by Nigar Abbaszade For more information about Thor Heyerdahl's research on Gobustan, see our feature, "The Azerbaijan Connection" (AI 3.1, Spring 1995). Here, for the first time, Heyerdahl wrote that he suspects that the ancestral people of Scandinavia came from the region now identified as Azerbaijan.
Photo: Carvings of reed boats at Gobustan that attracted Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl to visit the site. When I was just a kid in high school, our ancient history teacher took us to see the Stone Age petroglyphs at Gobustan. It wasn't far away-only 54 km southwest of Baku. I was amazed by the carvings I saw there-ancient peoples, goats, deer, boats and hunting scenes. The images made a deep impression on me and led me to do historical research about the "Magical Images in Ancient Art in Azerbaijan" for my Bachelor's degree at Baku State University in the Department of Culture and Art. Discovery of Gobustan
The petroglyphs of Gobustan were not discovered by an archeological expedition. In fact, their revelation came about quite by accident. In the 1930s, work was going on there in a stone quarry. The area is full of huge boulders and rock formations. One of the quarry workers noticed some unusual carvings on the rocks. The more the rocks were cut out, the more the paintings could be seen. (Before they had been hidden from view inside a huge pile of boulders.) Even more paintings were found inside what appeared to be man-made caves. Work at the quarry soon stopped so that the paintings could be examined more carefully.

The petroglyphs that I saw at Volcanoes National Park were along the Chain of Craters Road. There was a small pullout to park the car and a simple walk in to see the petroglyphs. The map indicated that the trail was .7 miles, but since the terrain was mostly level, it was not a strenuous hike. The trail is marked by cairns (small rock piles), and they lead to a wooden deck that encircles the petroglyphs. You can walk around on the deck and look over the rails to see the carvings. Since the petroglyps are protected, it is important that people do not walk on or touch the carvings. The images were carved by the ancestors of some people who are still local to the area, which was an interesting point to me. The people placed the umbilical cord of a newborn into a hole carved into the rock. If left undiscovered, the child would not grow up into a thief. In this image, there are many holes, and one interesting one that is surrounded by three circles.

The Petroglyphs of Hudson Strait
Photos and text by Fred Bruemmer
IN THE EARLY SUMMER OF 1961, the French anthropologist Bernard Saladin d'Anglure visited the small village of Wakeham Bay on the south shore of Hudson Strait. This is a region rich in game, inhabited by Eskimos since time immemorial. A federal meteorological observer, F. F. Payne, who lived in the area from August 1885 to September 1886 wrote: "The graves of the Eskimos are found everywhere along the coast, some well built over with stones while others only show where the body was laid, the bones being scattered in every direction. The favorite place of burial is an island where the foxes and wolves cannot get at the bodies, and near Cape Prince of Wales an island, about ten acres in area, was seen literally covered with graves; and monuments ten feet high were erected here and there throughout it." But so numerous are islands and islets in this region, that this particular Eskimo necropolis has not been rediscovered to this day. Thus it was not surprising to Saladin d'Anglure that Wakeham Bay's Eskimos volunteered information about a wealth of archaeological sites. What did surprise him, was the information that there were "devils' heads" cut into the rock of an ancient steatite quarry on Qikertaaluk Island, a day's journey from Wakeham Bay, where Eskimos in the past obtained soapstone for lamps, and which they still visited occasionally to procure soapstone for carvings.
