THE NETT LAKE PETROGLYPH SITE
by Kevin L. Callahan Anthropology Department University of Minnesota The Nett Lake Petroglyph Site is located on the Nett Lake (Bois Forte) Reservation in Koochiching County in northern Minnesota, on an island listed as Spirit Island. It is sometimes known locally as Picture Island or Drum Island because the island has petroglyphs and on walking over the polished rock area it was reputed to give out a hollow drum-like sound. The site is on the National Register of Historic Places and is well protected by local people who still may consider the island sacred. Tobacco, clothing , and food have been left near the carvings. Permission of the local tribal people to visit the island is advised and may not always be given. Wild rice which is growing near the island, has at times been a significant part of the local economy, and can be harmed by careless boat travel to the island. The petroglyphs are located on an igneous outcrop. The local oral history indicates that the petroglyphs were already there when the Ojibwa came into the area. Some of the petroglyphs may have been repecked. Spirit Island is supposed to be the home of small spirits known as Ah ge jaks. The stories about where Nett Lake derived its name and the making of the Nett Lake petroglyphs also involve “half sea-lion and half-fish” creatures, or in the modern version “children.” Lloyd A. Wilford, a University of Minnesota anthropology professor, in 1948 excavated a site in the current Village of Nett Lake about 1000 feet from Spirit Island. The excavation found a Blackduck and an earlier Laurel focus. The Middle and Late Woodland culture spanned the years from about 600 BC to 1600 AD. According to Wilford the Nett Lake area was probably never Siouxan territory but they may have hunted and raided in the Nett Lake area. He concluded that the area had probably been occupied by Cree or Assiniboine at times.

Gabriola Petroglyphs
Copying Petroglyph Images: Current Status In late October of 1999, the elders of the Snuneymuxw (Nanaimo) First Nation told us that some of the petroglyphs are sacred to them, and should not be copied. Not knowing which these were, the museum removed all petroglyph images from its website, and stopped providing materials for taking rubbings from the reproductions on the museum grounds. In September, 2000, Geraldine Manson joined the museum board as an extraordinary Director, responsible for liason with the Snuneymuxw Nation. With her assistance, we arrived at an agreement that would allow visitors to the museum to make rubbings from the reproductions, as long as they were done by individuals, for personal use, and not for sale or profit. The same rules would apply to petroglyph images on this website. In the spring of 2002, rubbing kits were again made available at the museum. We are still working on getting the website changed and posted. Some images are available (some with comments, others without). More images will be added in time.

Valley Of Fire
The Valley of Fire was dedicated as a state park in 1935. Valley of Fire is Nevada's oldest state park. The name refers to the spectacular red sandstone formations that are found in special abundance there. The multi-shaded red and golden yellow sandstone is part of the Navajo Sandstone Formation found throughout this part of the Southwest. This is the same geologic formation found in Red Rock Canyon , and along the North Shore Road of Lake Mead at places like "Redstone".
The 46,000 acre park is located 50 to 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas (depending on the route taken), and just east of the Overton Arm of Lake Mead. The Valley of Fire is a place of such rare and sublime beauty that people have been attracted to for thousands of years. This is evidenced by the large number of Petroglyphs found in several places throughout this park. Driving Directions Valley of Fire Park Map Preparing To Visit Valley Of Fire Fees And Park Information ... Tours from Las Vegas? Click Here! Where the Valley of Fire is today was once the bottom of a deep ocean basin, eventually to became part of a vast desert which existed about 150 to 180 million years ago. Continued sedimentary deposition buried those once shifting sands deep within the earth. Orogenic activity associated with the eastern Pacific subduction zone along the North American Pacific coast, approximately 65 million years ago, caused tremendous faulting, uplifting and shifting of the earths crust. This resulted in the tremendous diversity in geological formations found throughout this area. Erosion eventually exposed the remains of the ancient desert.

Native American petroglyphs and pictographs
Petroglyphs and pictographs are the oldest and most widespread forms of creative and cultural expression in the Native American Southwest.
Petroglyphs, or carved rock designs, and pictographs, or painted rock designs, are known by the general term rock art. In what are now the states of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado, prehistoric hunter-gatherer Indians began to decorate canyon walls, rock shelters, and boulders with rock art several thousand years ago. Navajos, Apaches, Pueblo Indians, and even Spanish soldiers and settlers continued to create rock art over the centuries. They probably did it for many reasons: aesthetic, magical, religious, historical, astronomical, as a part of hunting ritualsor a combination of the above. Archaeologists believe that rock art is much more than meaningless doodles. And contrary to popular belief, it was not created by the inhabitants of sunken, mythical continents, it does not represent maps to buried treasure or depict extraterrestrials, and it was not intended as a form of writing. Rock art does provide a means of understanding the sacred as well as the mundane in prehistoric and historic Indian culture. It is a way of recognizing cultural relationships and the patterns of communication and commerce among individuals and tribes. Changes in rock-art styles often reflect new ideologies and religious practices. However, the quality of the rock art and the level of sophistication of the culture it belongs to are not necessarily related.

Petroglyphs.................................
Petroglyphs are found all over the world , sometimes in locations where you find Rockpaintings too.
In Australia some native people still live in close relations to old religious rituals including sacred work with Rockpaintings and engraving Rockcarvings.
The shamans of Siberia worked on the rocks. In California the Shumash carved and painted their saga on the rocks. In the Italian alps people told thir saga of transportation and hunting. In bronze age Scandinavia the golden age of Petroglyphs seem to have occurred.
All these old global pictograms and ideograms have quite a few resemblance's with the oldest Chinese written "language".
From the darkness of prehistory until as recent as the bronze age the signs seem to have been globally understood; there were precise pictures of many different animals, there were the colors, probably with a very clear symbolic meaning, as in Nature, there were human features - the hand, one, two...feet and the easily understood body language of humans and animals.
But since the latest great geological catastrophe on Earth (the eruption of Thera/Santorrini, ca.1560 B.C.) language step out of petroglyphic symbolizing (passing through the hieroglyphs) into letters and words.

Native American Petroglyphs of Machias Bay
Maine’s petroglyph expert, Mark Hedden of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, has called the Machias Bay petroglyph sites the most important ones on the eastern seaboard, due to the number and age (mostly 1,500 – 3,000 years old) of these rare forms of rock art. Maine has only two other known petroglyph locations, one on a ledge on the Kennebec River in Embden, and a few more recent carvings in ledges along Grand Lake Stream. The Machias Bay carvings are much more numerous than those at Maine's other two petroglyph sites combined. The Machias Bay petroglyphs occur in a rust-colored or maroon rock coating of volcanic origin covering extensive slate ledges. The shaman dinted (pecked) the carving into the ledge using a rock tool. As the thin coating was chipped away, the black slate below it showed through with enough contrast to create the picture. Viewers of these rock carvings, created thousands of years ago, usually experience a strong feeling of reverence, awe, and even goosebumps as they remember the difficult and primitive life these early Native Americans lived. Yet, they found time to leave a record in the rocks that has withstood the forces of time, tide, and weather for hundreds of years. Maine’s petroglyphs are truly a national treasure.

In addition to the beautiful desert scenery Petrified Forest National Park also contains a rich collection of archaeological remains from many centuries of human occupation. Chief among these are the remarkable petroglyphs found in several parts of the park. These are figures carved into the dark "desert varnish" which covers the sandstone. The rock below is known as "Newspaper Rock" and is one of the best examples of petroglyphs found in the southwestern United States. The drawings were probably carved by the Anasazi.
More petroglyphs can be found at the Puerco Indian Ruin in the central portion of the park. The setting for these petroglyphs can be seen in the picture on the left, and a closer view shown on the right. It is not currently known what the significance of the drawings might be, although some seem to serve as a solar calendar.
More detail of these petroglyphs can be seen in the picture below. Most striking is the large wading birdan avocet, perhapspictured just to the left of center. It is not known whether the artist depicted a frog, or a person, in the bird's mouth.

Whitley The Coso Petroglyphs Little Petroglyph Canyon is a national treasure. Located in the Coso Mountains of eastern California, it is part of one of the largest concentrations of rock art in North America, and it stands as a permanent testimony of the artistry, symbolism and religious beliefs of our Native American forebears. The geographical remoteness of Little Petroglyph Canyon, in the high reaches of rugged volcanic badlands, has for many years helped separate this rock art from our modern lives. Distant from our everyday activities, the art has also seemed far removed from us intellectually and culturally. Hard to see, and harder still to know and understand, the petroglyphs are a remote enigma that, like a lost city, can only be reached and understood with great effort. In recent years archaeologists have begun to unravel the mystery of the Coso Petroglyphs. New and sophisticated scientific techniques have allowed the dating of these rock engravings for the first time, giving us information about the antiquity of this art. Using historical records and accounts of the Native American inhabitants of this region, archaeologists have also begun to reconstruct the rituals and symbolism of the Petroglyphs, showing that they were tied to the human mind, they are now identifying the universal aspects of these petrogylphs, finding the characteristics that are common to all humans and showing that, instead of being enigmatic, the petroglyphs are part of a wider phenomenon reflecting the origins of human creativity and religious beliefs...

Handmade switch cover with designs of petroglyphs, natural rock and modern art.
http://www.geo-designs.com/
TIMELESS works of art that suggest remembrance of past civilizations are depicted on geoplate switch plate covers and other decorative Southwest accessories. SOMEWHERE in our evolution, in a desert region we now call part of the United States, native people found an ideal geography for the expression and communication of their culture. By chipping away the surface of large stones that were darkened from age, the fresh contrasting colors just below were exposed. Many of these "petroglyphs" are still with us today, providing a visual record of obscure events in our ancestors' lives. THESE ancient symbols help remind us that it is the legacy of each individual (of any place or time) to ascend to that space where one's life symbols may truly be reflected in their future. Knowing this, it is from such a legacy that legends are born. "It is indeed a strange art whose roots disappear in the darkness of time and which already in primitive ages was producing works which cause the civilized mind to marvel." Baudelaire

Luahiwa Petroglyphs
South Central Lanai
Ancient Hawaiians came to Lanai as early at the 15th Century. Petroglyphs are drawings made on lava rocks by these early settlers. Luahiwa Petroglyphs has one of the most exciting and interesting collections of such ancient writings in all of Hawaii. Difficult to find and even more difficult to reach, these petroglyphs cover the hillside with hundreds of drawings on numerous boulders. These pictures are very well preserved probably due to Lanai's dry climate and limited visitation. The meaning of these drawings has long since been lost but you can make out figures representing men and women, family units, pets, goats, canoes, and even a possible surfer. Surfing was a sport even back then enjoyed solely by the ali'i (royalty). Petroglyphs were made by pounding a pointed rock with a larger dull rock into the boulder thus carving out the figures. In rainy climates the etchings would eventually wash away but dry, arid climates are conducive to preservation of these historical finds.
