Following are a number of photos I decided to take before these petroglyphs get any more trashed than they are now. People can be unbelievably stupid and selfish, defacing these at an astonishing rate. Hopefully, you will be as fascinated as I was. Here are rare photos of Anasazi Indian rock art, otherwise known as petroglyphs. These pictoral stories were chipped out of the desert varnish in Entrada sandstone about 600 years ago. There are a number of qualified tour guides who can give you this unique experience of viewing stunning curious native American artworks. Please visit our main page to find out more.

Your Letter is URGENTLY Needed to Save Petroglyph National Monument
Using your own ideas and some of the following points, write brief letters to Senator Bingaman and the President's Interior Secretary, Bruce Babbit, urging their strong opposition to any Paseo bills. It would set a national precedent allowing commuter roads to be built through other units of the National Park system. It would desecrate one of the last remaining major sacred areas for Pueblo Indian tribes. Paseo is a politicians' road. The people don't want it. It would promote costly suburban sprawl and could contribute to another round of tax increases. There are less expensive alternatives to alleviate traffic congestion and provide for orderly growth without Paseo and Unser. Senator Jeff Bingaman

My Prehistoric Photo Gallery Petroglyphs are footnotes of a long gone belief-system. The ki'i pohaku were not considered art even by their creators. We can learn about them by imagining what purposes they served. The by-product of an oral culture these stone-engraved marks represent forgotten legends and prayer shards. Here are samples of ancient Hawaiian Rock Art photographed from the WESTSIDE galleries of the Big Island. Click this link to visit EASTSIDE galleries. Everyone asks, "What do petroglyphs mean?" Ancient Carvings Leave Their Mark
By Dan Olson
May 28, 1999 RealAudio 3.0
Unique rock carvings attract thousands of visitors, archaelogists, and students. Tucked away in a small patch of southwestern Minnesota prairie is one of the state's enduring mysteries. Centuries ago people carved thousands of symbols into rocks near the small town of Jeffers. Who were they, and why did they painstakingly carve petroglyphs of animals and other figures? This summer archeologists will take another crack at answering the questions. But in the meantime, the site is becoming a hot spot for visitors interested in the carvings. THREE HOURS WEST AND SOUTH of the Twin Cities, there's an 80-acre patch of restored prairie called the Jeffers Petroglyph Site. There, a 300-yard-long crescent of red quartzite slices through the sod. The broad, flat rock sits at a low angle facing southwest. A nearly constant wind rustles the tall grass and rattles microphones at the rock's border. Rain from low clouds dots the blue denim jacket of Micheal Lucio as he walks on the crushed rock path to the petroglyphs.

Petroglyphs of the Volcanic Tablelands: Bishop, California Story by Jeffrey O'Brien. All comments or questions are welcome. Getting Started: Visit the Cultural Center of the Paiute - Shoshone reservation on West Line Street before you head off to the sites. The museum offers excellent informative displays featuring the history of the occupation of these tribes in the Owens Valley. In 1997, there were approximately 2,000 Native Americans living on the Bishop Reservation. Taking a few minutes to learn in more detail about the creators of these petroglyphs will enhance your experience in the field. The local descendants of the Paiute - Shoshone decline to share detailed information regarding the meanings or functions of the rock art. Sadly, their reluctance to offer information about the exact location of the various sites is justified. On some occasions people have behaved destructively and disrespectfully. If you are genuinely interested in rediscovering the sites, you will find them.

73. Two Enigmatic Petroglyphs On Fuerteventura/Canary Islands

TRACCE no. February 2000
Two enigmatic petroglyphs on Fuerteventura/Canary Islands
As a result of an one years research project in 1993/94 the author was able to document about 780 panels of rock art exclusively on Fuerteventura, one of the eastern islands of the Canarian Archipelago. Thus it was possible for the first time to examine the typology and frequency of motifs for a whole island. The most astonishing result was the nearly total absence of manifestations of human beings and animals. The linear signs are dominating, followed by geometric signs like pentagrams, circles or triangles. There even are a lot of iconic signs like footprints and ships, but not one drawing which clearly could be attributed to the subject of human beings, inclusively of aspects of their environment (dwellings, weapons etc.). This result is quite astonishing if one compares with the rock art of adjoining regions like Northern Africa or the Iberian Peninsula. Two of the documented panels are totally off the beaten track and have no similarity among the others, even not in comparison with the rock art of all the Canary Islands. So: What’s your opinion about these two enigmatic petroglyphs? Does anybody know comparable motifs in other rock art areas?

PHOTOGRAPHS: RAY HILL Petroglyphs, Heaven and Earth

by Grant Keddie For up to thousands of years, figures have been carved in stone along the beaches and in forests stretching around the Pacific Rim from California to China. Some of the human face and animal design elements found in British Columbia show interesting parallels with those found along the coast of Siberia. One of the most common questions I am asked in regard to these rock carvings or petroglyphs is what are they, and what do they mean? Were these designs pecked into the rock by a shaman for a special purpose? We cannot understand these images by trying to analyze them from the perspective of our modern culture. We need to look to traditional aboriginal cultures that experienced a different reality than that of Euro-Americans. Reality is not just what we see, but what we have learned to see. In traditional hunter-gather societies, the human and "natural" worlds are interwoven by threads of spiritual power. The natural and supernatural worlds are inseparable; each is intrinsically a part of the other. It is generally understood that natural events that affect people's lives were caused or influenced by human actions.

Hi - I'm Deb, shown here with our dog Sputnik, fighting over dinner. Yes, the tattoos are real. I've been working with polymer clay (FIMO) for several years, augmenting my "regular" job as a high school physics teacher at Iolani School here in Honolulu. Some people think the combination of physics and art is a strange one, but it's balanced - left brain/right brain. This is my first web page, and so is of course still under construction, but here are some samples of my work.
