The first article "The City of Tiers" records part of my explorations in Amazonas. Fans of the Celestine Prophecy will find the proximity of these ruins and the Pyramidal shape of the temple an interesting "coincidence." Following are other informative articles on Peru. 1. THE CITY OF TIERS/Chacha Picchu
(The Lost Temple of the Chachapoyans)
By Frank G. Ciampa
On June 19, 1995, after days of challenging and often treacherous exploring in Peru's Department of Amazonas, the Amazonas I Expedition was rewarded with an astounding new discovery. Tired and hungry, we found ourselves standing on top of an ancient Chachapoyan temple (which was followed by many other ruins). This lost temple and city had been hidden for five centuries by thick jungle growth. We discovered the ruins on a nameless mountain which my partner, Francisco Seoane Jr., named "True Calpunta" (@ 06 22' 14" S/78 05' 28" W, elevation @ 3100+ meters), therefore I named the temple complex The Temple of True Calpunta, or in Spanish, El Templo de Verdadera Calpunta. This complex of ruins is on the Calpunta range, in the area of Gran Vilaya. They are now the highest known ruins in the area (as reported in Lima's El Comercio The seeds of my expedition were planted during the Andean Explorers Foundation's (AEF) Gran-Vilaya/El Dorado VI expedition in 1994. This expedition was lead by the famous explorer Gene Savoy. Because my ideas didn't fit into the expedition's agenda, I was unable to go to certain areas that I felt were crucial to explore. Therefore, I began that summer to plan my own return expedition. Later, two members of the AEF's expedition would join me - Francisco Seoane Jr. and Jon Muncy. Francisco had led a small probe in 1994 that might have discovered True Calpunta if they continued for another two hours.

Ancient Peoples
Petroglyphs of the Cosos
By A.R. Royo
A Well-Kept Secret For years I've been hearing vague rumors about the mysterious Petroglyphs of the Cosos a series of remote desert canyons brimming with ancient Native American rock art hidden from the public on a U.S. military base. Last year, my friend Dr. Anderson, an historian who was preparing a monograph on the subject, finally divulged their location to me. The material he sent me indicated that the largest concentration of petroglyphs in the western hemisphere was displayed in the canyons of the Coso Mountains, which are located in a remote region between the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Death Valley, where the Mojave and Great Basin deserts meet. The Cosos lie within the confines of China Lake Naval Weapons Center (NWC), the U.S. Navy's largest research and development facility. It encompasses about 1,200 square miles of dry lake beds, desert mountains and volcanic lava flows in southeastern California. The northern half of this base is the primary target area for missile weapons testing. It is littered with ordnance debris from more than half a century of such tests. It is also permeated with more than 100,000 drawings, pecked into the basalt cliffs and canyon walls during the past 10,000 years. Many of these drawings depict ancient man hunting Bighorn Sheep with the weapons appropriate to his time the Atlatl (spear thrower) and the bow and arrow. Since establishment of the NAWS base in 1943, public access to the region has been cut off. The canyons (and therefore the petroglyphs) have remained well protected since then. In 1964, two of the canyons were designated a national historic landmark, and the Navy eased restrictions to allow for limited visitation of the sites.

Ancestral Dinosaur Fossil Discovered Fossilized bones of "Gertie," a small ancestor of the huge tyrannosaurus were discovered near Chinde Point, among the fallen trees of the Petrified Forest. At the time of the discovery, in 1985, the bones were the most ancient known to science, at some 225 million years old. Since her discovery, Gertie tentatively has been identified as a Staurikosaur. These meat-eating creatures were small; just 7 to 8 feet long, and about 150 pounds. Following studies by paleontologists, Gertie's fossilized bones will be displayed at Petrified Forest.

JEFFERS PETROGLYPHS
Cottonwood County, Minnesota In the midst of a vast prairie in southwestern Minnesota massive ridges of very ancient rock rise up to lie just below the surface of the ground. On this watershed divide, among the tall grass, there are a few places where the underlying rock breaks through to the surface. Buried for millennia, the stone preserves evidence of ancient watercourses in the rippled surfaces of sand that were slowly solidified by heat and pressure. Gradually thrust to the surface and rough-polished by glacial ice, a "canvas" was created that became a medium for the signs and symbols of ancient American Indians. Imprinted in this scoured rock face are fleeting images that bear testimony to the generations of earlier inhabitants of this land. These forms are found carved in a score of locations, however one of these places surpasses all the rest by virtue of the abundance and diversity present there. This place is today known as the Jeffers Petroglyphs
Painting and engraving of rock are some of the oldest surviving forms of human expression.. This expression is a worldwide phenomenon with tens of thousands of sites on six continents. The images in different regions are distinctive with characteristic styles, subjects, and methods of execution. Rock art, a generic term used by researchers that is applied to rock engravings and rock paintings and drawings, is broadly described in two categories: 1) rock paintings and drawings, jointly referred to as

50. Carving The Cosmos
Astronomical analysis of petroglyphs on sandstone panels, Arizona.

islandhills@cybertrails.com Across ocher and salmon colored sandstone a shadow crawls like a shallow pool of water flowing in slow motion. Its fuzzy penumbra gradually slides over the spiral petroglyph pecked into smooth rock. We know this movement is the result of the greater spinning of our planet in relation to a stationary sun. However, for the Hisatsinom (a.k.a. the Anasazi and the Sinagua), shadows were animate beings whose movements reflected those of the Underworld spirits. Conceptualized by the ancestral Hopi as supernatural "shades," these dusky revenants were imbued with a mysterious vitalism that imparted not only beauty in the eye of beholder but awe as well. Archaeoastronomer Ray A. Williamson has termed this phenomenon "hierophany," or sacred appearance (from the Greek words hieros , "sacred" and phaino , "to reveal or make appear.") [Ray A. Williamson, "Living the Sky: The Cosmos of the American Indian" (Norman, Oklahoma: University of Oklahoma Press, 1989, reprint 1987), p. 92.] We can imagine the members of the first village at Homolovi (settled circa A.D. 1260 near the present town of Winslow, Arizona) gathering before dawn on the summer solstice in an alcove-like enclosure of rock not far from their pueblo. Here they await the sacred interplay of shadow and sunlight. The main panel, which faces eastward, is created by a vertical sandstone fault about 25 feet long and 15 feet high. It is capped by an overhanging slab that extends horizontally about four feet to the east. Approximately 10 feet to the east is a round-topped boulder that forms the inner east wall of the enclosure and casts a curved shadow upon the main panel. Open to the south but blocked to the north by broken chunks of rock heaped higher than their heads, this enclosure protects the observers who sit cross-legged and close together on the ground, gazing in rapt attention at the primary grouping of petroglyphs on the main panel.

When the Petroglyph Monument Protection Coalition formed in 1996, the Petroglyph controversy was primarily seen as an environmental issue. Young Native Americans and People of Color came together to bring to light the spiritual significance of the area. We were determined to let people know that this was not just an environmental issue, but also an issue about our Religious Freedom. While making great strides in our efforts to stop the road, we have also been building a strong People of Color-led community organization. Changing our name in 2000 from Petroglyph Monument Protection Coalition to SAGE Council, we have institutionalized our presence as an accountable, powerful voice for People of Color, working families and low-income people in Albuquerque. We Need Smart Growth Now!
The Petroglyph area is established as a National Park. Non-Indian residents rally in favor of the road. Tonanzin Land Institute counters and allies with other community and environmental organizations forming a traditional coalition aptly named the Petroglyph Monument Protection Coalition (PMPC). PMPC, along with other several concerned citizens, meet with Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM) to see if a proposed bill to adjust the Petroglyph National Monument boundaries would be a stand-alone bill or if it would be attached as a rider to another bill. Domenici said it would be a stand-alone bill.

Bundle:XML and expat on Mac OS X

I'm trying to install Bundle::XML on my Mac OS X machine. That's a Perl module, by the way. Turns out there's some tricky stuff to it. First, Mac OS X doesn't have expat installed. That is, the expat libraries in /usr/local/include (or wherever they may go) that stuff links to when building. XML::Parser.pm, which is something Bundle::XML needs, depends on expat. But expat itself doesn't build correctly out of the box on Mac OS X because it wants to build as a static library and Apple discourages static libraries on Mac OS X. And even when you get expat built, there's tricky stuff with XML::Parser.pm on OS X as well. David Wheeler explains the tricks and thanks to him I got everthing built. Well, I think I did. I haven't actually tested it yet.

Handcrafted sterling silver jewelry inspired by the petroglyphs of Southeast Alaska.
http://www.alaskasilver.com/
Petroglyphs are engravings on rock and were carved by the Native Americans that inhabited the area at the time. They are most commonly found in the Pacific Northwest and Southwest regions of the United States, but are found throughout the world. The design was created by striking the face of the rock repeatedly with a sharper piece of stone. Pictographs or paintings on rock, can also be found. Animal and human figures are the most abundant of petroglyphs; but circles, spirals, and other graphics are also found. Petroglyph Beach in Wrangell, Alaska was the original inspiration for this unique line. Many of the rock carvings are slowly fading due to weather, erosion and human impact and they may all too soon be gone. Simply Sterling has designed this jewelry to allow individuals to take home our interpretations of the treasured petroglyphs and enjoy wearing them for years to come. Simply Sterling

60. The Jeffers Petroglypsh Site In The Midwestern United States Contains Over 2,000
Abstract of a conference presentation on Jeffers petroglyphs, with bibliography and two photos.
http://rupestre.net/tracce/JEFFABST.html
TRACCE no. special issue for RA Congress 1997
Pattern and Function at Jeffers Petroglyphs, Minnesota, USA

The Jeffers Petroglyphs site in the Midwestern United States contains over 2,000 recorded carvings, some of which likely date to 5,000 B.P. The nearly horizontal surface of the quartzite outcrop retains ripples and mud cracks as evidence of its shoreline formation 1.6 billion years ago and striations resulting from the last glacial advance some 14,000 years ago. Sitting atop a high ridge in a virgin prairie in the Couteau des Prairies, the site is on the watershed divide between the Mississippi and Missouri River basins near the eastern periphery of the Great Plains. Largely descriptive in nature, the 1970s initial detailed research documented glyphs representing animals important for subsistence, a variety of humanoid forms, weapons (including the atlatl), and abstract forms. The absence of such forms as firearms and the horse and other images frequently associated with the late prehistoric period suggests that the carvings clearly predate European contact with American Indians in this region. Recent analysis documents spatial patterning which reflects the episodic nature of the creation and use of the site. The use of Correspondence Analysis as an analytical method clearly depicts relationships between glyphs and glyph clusters that are partly explicable within the cosmology of various American Indian Plains tribes. Ethnographic data recorded among the Cheyenne, Dakota, Hidatsa and others by explorers, naturalists, and anthropologists contain a wealth of information useful in understanding the meaning of many of the glyphs. Particularly useful are American Indian authored ledger drawings that allow for interpretation of certain elements of the site in a historically recorded context. The cosmology associated with creation myths provides another interpretive framework within which to understand relationships between the site and its landscape setting.
