The extensive cliffside Aboriginal petroglyphic carvings on the southwest coast of Tasmania constitute the oldest and largest prehistoric art site in the world. Australia has many examples of Aboriginal Art and Cave Paintings and they will be found in many places. Among the most accessible are those in the Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory caves in the Grampians National Park in Victoria, and on Cape Yorke Peninsula in Queensland. This particular figure was discovered in Victoria Australia and depicts a "human" like figure. Notice the "helmet", "gloves", "boots", and body attire. Rock Art of Ancestral figures note: the "antennas" on the 2 figures behind. These 2 figures represent the "spirit beings" called the Lightning Brothers Tjabuinji and Jagtjadbulla A picture of a spirit being, called a Quinkan a being which lured men to it, a trickster being which as Aboriginal lore goes would dehumanize you. These figures are named the Wandjina they are always represented by a large band around the head as well as large eyes etc. They are the most popular figures to be drawn by the Aboriginals.

PETROGLYPH LOOTERS SENTENCED
On March 13, three Arizona residents who illegally removed and sold
petroglyphs from a national forest were sentenced in the U.S. District
Court for the district of Arizona. The three earlier had pled guilty to
violating the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA; 16 U.S.C.
In January 1994 Adam Bruce sold four petroglyphs from Kaibab National
Forest to federal undercover agents. During conversations with the
agents, Bruce admitted that he knew his actions were illegal. He also implicated his father, John Bruce, as the "mastermind" of their "business," which, in addition to the looting of archeological goods, also included natural resources violations on Forest Service lands, such as elk

As you walk among the petroglyphs, you are not alone. This world is alive with the sights and sounds of the high desert - a hawk spirals down from the mesa top, a roadrunner scurries into fragrant sage, a desert millipede traces waves in the sand. There is another presence beyond what we can see or hear. People who have lived along the Rio Grande for many centuries come alive again through images they carved on the shiny black rocks. These images, and associated archeological sites in the Albuquerque area, provide glimpses into a 12,000 year long story of human life in this area. Petroglyph National Monument stretches 17 miles along Albuquerque's West Mesa, a volcanic basalt escarpment that dominates the city’s western horizon. Authorized June 27, 1990, the 7,236 acre monument is cooperatively managed by the National Park Service and the City of Albuquerque. Petroglyph National Monument protects a variety of cultural and natural resources including five volcanic cones, hundreds of archeological sites and an estimated 25,000 images carved by native peoples and early Spanish settlers. Many of the images are recognizable as animals, people, brands and crosses; others are more complex. Their meaning, possibly, understood only by the carver. These images are inseparable from the greater cultural landscape, from the spirits of the people who created them, and all who appreciate them. Petroglyph National Monument is a place of respect, awe and wonderment.

24. ROCK ART & PETROGLYPHS: The Petroglyphs Of Santinho Beach, Brasil
From Tracce, the petroglyphs of Santinho Beach, Santa Catarina Island, Brazil
http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/3982/santinh.html
TRACCE no. back to index
The petroglyphs of Santinho Beach S.ta Catarina Island (Brasil)
Santinho beach, situated in S.ta Catarina Island, 40 Km far from Florianópolis town, shows three rock art sites, engraved on its rock walls. The coast is a good place for fishing and shell collecting.
In the southern side, distant about 100 m from the coast rock walls, runs a stream of pure water, which probably satisfied the water needs of the prehistoric peoples.
Until now, we have no proof of settlement in Santinho beach. The nearest site is in the north, crossing the dunes, in Ingleses beach. Those sites have not been deeply investigated, but I can argue, through a surface collection and ceramic analysis, the existence of the Itararé and of the Guarani cultures.
(right up)
The site is not well preserved, and remains of sambaqui show the possibility of a hunters-gatherers preceramic occupation. It's very strange that we have no vestige of rock art in Ingleses beach, even with favorable conditions such as the abundance of the diabase rock. However, we have a great number of lithic stations (sharp and polished implements), perhaps the biggest site of lithic stations in S.ta Catarina Island.
Making a typologic analysis of the petroglyphs in Santinho Beach, the predominant type is represented by the circles, showing a variation of 8 subtypes and totalizing 20 elements; the most frequent subtypes are the series of filled triangles (silhueta), and between them the double parallel series (repeated 6 times, totalizing 12 elements), which is a theme commonly repeated regionally in the painted decorations of the Guarani ceramic, in the interior of the S.ta Catarina State. Locally we have a corrugate style.

    The Rodman Mountains Petroglyphs
Lucerne Valley / Barstow Area Situated in the Mojave Desert about 30 miles north-east of Lucerne Valley lies a historic wash where Indians once came to leave us reminders of the past. These "rock art" engravings were put here by Native Americans over the past 12,000 years using stone tools. Some believe the rock art was left by the Cahuilla or the Chemehuevi Indian Tribes. We may never know for sure. Over the years the petroglyphs site has been visited by hundreds of people. The BLM is keeping the access roads open, marked and available but the exact location is still somewhat unadvertised to help keep the destructive weekend warriors away. There is unfortunately a part of society that is not content with viewing and observing the beauty and history surrounding us.
The petroglyph visiting rules are quite simple: Only take pictures and leave footprints.
A vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended. 4WD is not necessary. At the entrance there is a clearing with plenty of parking.

    Three Rivers, New Mexico
Description The Three Rivers Petroglyphs Site is one of the few locations in the Southwest set aside solely because of its rock art. It is also one of the few sites giving visitors such direct access to petroglyphs. The number and concentration of petroglyphs here make it one of the largest and most interesting petroglyph sites in the Desert Southwest. More than 21,000 glyphs of birds, humans, animals, fish, insects and plants, as well as numerous geometric and abstract designs are scattered over 50 acres of New Mexico's northern Chihuahuan Desert. Most of the petroglyphs here decorate a long, basalt ridge rising from the upper Tularosa Basin at the base of the Sacramento Mountains. Petroglyphs at Three Rivers were created by Jornada Mogollon people between about 900 and 1400 AD. A short interpretative trail 200 yards south of the petroglyphs leads to the remains of the Mogollon village, whose inhabitants were likely responsible for the petroglyphs. The site, which was partially excavated in 1976, was occupied for about 400 years. Foundations of three types of prehistoric buildings can be seen here. The one-mile, round-trip trail along the ridge winds through thousands of petroglyphs created over a period of a few hundred years. Trail markers, which correspond to the trail guide provided upon admission, indicate petroglyphs of particular interest along this somewhat rugged route.

Petroglyph Terminology If you're new to rock art and petroglyphs, you'll undoubtedly run across a few terms that you're unfamiliar with. Several of these terms will be used here too. To refresh those who are already aquainted with rock art terminology and, to enlighten others who are not familiar with them. Here are some of the basics: Petroglyph - greek: petro meaning rock, and glyph meaning drawing or engraving. Anthropomorphism - the attributing of human shape or characteristics to gods, objects, animals, etc. Example of petroglyphs commonly referred to as anthropomorph(s) . This particular sample of petroglyph - photo taken at the North site - is also interpreted by some anthropologists as a frog, toad, or lizard. Pecking - (or small peck) used to describe a method used to create a petroglyph. Whereby a tool, such as a sharp pointed rock, was utilized in a percussive manner, to hit the rock and carve the drawing. The tool may have been used alone or with a "hammerstone" to peck the bearing surface. Petroglyphs made in this manner have a rough, pitted surface. All petroglyphs observed at the site locations here appear to be made by the small peck method. Ram or deer with special powers?

1998 Field Notes: Caving for Petroglyphs at Kruger Cave 8/8/98
by Kevin L. Callahan , Anthropology Department, U of M, Upper Midwest Rock Art Research Association
Introduction On August 8, 1998 a group of 9 people led by several very experienced cavers from the Minnesota Speleological Survey (MSS) re-explored parts of Kruger Cave to look for petroglyphs which were described by Theodore H. Lewis in a letter written in the late 1880's . Dave Gerboth, who extensively surveyed and mapped the cave in 1982, was there and led the group through many of the tunnels. Kruger Cave is a very complex maze cave with tight crawl spaces and visitors can easily become lost even with a map. We came across a recently deceased racoon just inside the entrance to the cave. Some modern graffitti was found in one room but so far no Native American petroglyphs have been located. Only a small part of the cave can be covered in one trip, however, and there are plans to return to the cave again this summer to continue the search. Kruger Cave has never been fully explored.
