PETROGLYPHS
Petroglyphs at Orongo
Thousands of petroglyphs (rock carvings) can be found on Easter Island. Many represent animals, notably birds or anthropomorphic birdmen. After the demise of the statue building, in the last days before the invasion by Peruvian slave traders, there arose a cult of the Birdman (Tangata Manu). The birdman was seen as the representative on earth of the creator god Makemake, and eventually, this cult surpassed the traditional power of the king ( ariki
Once a year, representatives from each clan would gather at the ceremonial village of Orongo , and swim to Motu Nui, a nearby Islet to search for the egg of the Sooty Tern. On his return, the competitor presented the egg to his representative who was then invested with the title of Tangata Manu . He then went down to Mataveri and from there was led in procession to the southwest exterior slope of Rano Raraku, where he remained in seclusion for a year.
  • The Birdman ritual was still in existence when Europeans arrived on Easter Island - therefore historically documented. It was also featured quite prominently in

Petroglyphs and rock art galore Welcome to WCP-NM.COM's latest website. This is our most exciting endeavor so far. Petroglyphs and rock art from a location near Los Lunas, Valencia County, New Mexico that we believe has never before been documented. Although our research and combing of the area for more of what our ancient, native ancestors left here is still incomplete. Our files are bulging with hundreds of photographs of rare petroglyphs. Many unlike anything you've ever seen before. It is our belief that petroglyphs of the southwestern United States (and around the world for that matter), should be shared for viewing with as many people as possible. So join us now to support the other groups worldwide, like Rock Art Net and Footsteps of Man, in making as much information as possible available for access here on the Internet. http://www.crystalinks.com/petroglyphs.html

Petroglyphs (petro = rock; glyph = carving) are man-made images which were pecked, scratched, incised or abraided into stone. Petroglyphs date back thousands of years and are found all over the world. They were used by early man to record events, visions and story telling. They were produced using crude tools such as sticks, rocks or bone. Such pictures convey ideas or meaning to the mind without the use of words, sounds or other language form. This primitive method of communication is known as pictography (picture-writing) and it formed the basis of the Chinese and Japanese characters used today. Indians found North of the Rio Grande had no written language. They managed to keep alive traditions and tell stories by passing them down by word of mouth. Picture writing (petroglyphs and pictographs) were helpful in aiding memory and communicating ideas from one generation to the next. Often accompanying petroglyphs are ancient artifacts that belonged to people from ancient cultures. Ancient cultures around the world made these recordings in stones as stone seemed to create a permanent record of their timeline.

    Petroglyphs in Koryong
Koryong, mysterious ancient village, was probably a main city of the federate nation Karakuk (Great Kaya ; A.D. 42 ~ 562). There are row of ancient turf mounds (Tumuli) along the hill behind the village. But their history was absorbed into Silla(A.D. 562) and completely forgotten. Cultures of Karakuk had a powerful influence on ancient Japan at that period. Koryong is located in the junction of two rivers, sometimes could be flooded. Because of it, I think tumuli were probably constructed on the hill.
    Yangzondong Petroglyphs
These petroglyphs which were carved on the plain face of rock, were found and reported in 1971. It is placed in yangzondong, koryong, near Taegu, Korea. Concentric circles and several unknown geometrical patterns are carved in a tilted rectangle 2.3m high and 4.3m wide, in which designs looks like a mask that are called 'Kompasic' or 'Paehyong' (similar figures to a bronze tablet or a handle of stone sword), etc., and which are known as only having found in southern Korea. "The carvings are believed to date to the late Bronze or early Iron Age because some stone implements and earthenware from those times were discovered near hear." (quote from Information Board)

We believe these ancient sites should be protected from destruction and should be appreciated for the beautiful prehistoric art they represent. The best way to achieve our goal to protect these sites is with the cooperation of an informed and enlightened public. Petroglyphs are also called carved rock, Indian writing, picture writing and rock graphics. The ancient images shown on these pages were created by the Anasazi, Sinagua, Salado, Fremont, Hohokam and Desert Culture people who lived in the prehistoric Southwest and Great Basin. This page contains links to my photographs of rock art. I've put several pictures from each site on separate pages for your ease of viewing. Depending on the speed of your computer each page may take a few minutes to download. I also placed some text on each page and captions under most of the pictures for you to read during the downloads to keep you from getting restless. http://csep1.phy.ornl.gov/CSEP/ICONSINF.html
Here are some of the explanations we found on the petroglyphs used throughout CSEP:
    - Smaller figures are located underneath the larger image shown here to suggest families and possibly represent birth scenes.
The elaborate headcrests possibly represent ali'i (nobility) who were considered to be direct descendants of the major gods, akua. This headcrest may depict the helmets which only ali'i were allowed to wear in ceremonies.
Three types of hands discovered: negative hand, positive hand, and the pseudo-positive hand. Ethnographical comparisons were made with these prehistoric hand representations.
Thousands of petroglyphs cover the pahoehoe dome in Hawaii consisting of simple holes carved into the lava. It is believed to have been the site where Hawaiians would bring the piko (umbilical cord) of newborns and create a new hole to place the piko. Next day, the presence or absence of the piko (confusion still exists as to which represents good fortune) would mean long life promised to the child.

    Ancient Hawaiian Petroglyphs
The ancient Hawaiians documented experiences and special occasions with carvings into rocks. This page contains ancient Hawaiian rock carvings found on the island of Lanai near Shipwreck Beach.
Since it is hard to see the detail of the carving on the rock on the left over the internet we have outlined the petroglyphs on the right to reveal an apparent hunting scene with 13 men (women did not hunt), a dog, a horse, and the object of the hunt which we are guessing is a cow or exaggerated pig. There are many petroglyphs showing men, women, and children in a variety of poses and doing a variety of actions like surfing, hunting, and fishing. Some of the bodies are drawn with a thick triangular torso and others are very slender sticks. Carvings showing a closed triangular body usually represent a man. A penis is often drawn on the petroglyphs depicting a man. A woman petroglyph is usually drawn with an triangular body with the point near the legs NOT connecting. The open triangular body represents the womb. Breasts are also often drawn on petroglyphs depicting a woman. The below petroglyph shows a hunting scene with a man, dog, and Axis deer. Dogs were brought to the Hawaiian Islands by the first Polynesians. Eight Axis deer were brought to Lanai from India in the mid 1800's. Today there are over 8,000 Axis deer on Lanai that are descendents of the original eight. Axis deer are still hunted on Lanai today.

    THE PIPESTONE PETROGLYPHS
Thomas D. Thiessen National Park Service The "Three Maidens" Pipestone National Monument, bordering the town of Pipestone in southwestern Minnesota, preserves and interprets the historic catlinite quarries which, for hundreds of years, served as the source of a soft red claystone that Native Americans carved into pipes and other objects. These famous quarries have often been described in travelers' accounts since 1832, when they were first known to have been visited by non-Native Americans (Prescott 1852; Parker 1966). Almost as famous as the quarries are the petroglyphs carved into Sioux Quartzite outcrops near the quarry pits. Many of these petroglyphs were observed, commented on, and recorded at various times during the nineteenth century by visitors drawn to the nearby quarries. A large number originally were carved into the quartzite bedrock that underlies a glacially deposited group of large granite boulders called the Three Maidens. At two other locations within the Monument, Native American petroglyphs have been recorded within the past decade. It is possible, even likely, that additional petroglyphs remain undiscovered within the Monument's boundary. Catlin's painting of Pipestone - Three Maidens are on the upper right.
