A small celebration of Robert's forest garden at Wenlock Edge, described as 'possibly the UK's only fully developed permaculture Project.'
http://pages.unisonfree.net/gburnett/Forest/
This site is a small celebration of the Forest Garden at Wenlock Edge, Shropshire on the Welsh Borders, created by Robert Hart, who passed away on the 7th March, 2000.
It consists of photographs taken during a visit in July 1997 by students of the Permaculture Design Course held by Naturewise in North London, and an account of that visit which was published in the newsletter of VOHAN , the Vegan Organic Horticulture and Agriculture Network.
To me Robert was a true 20th Century hero, whose contribution to our sense of possiblity far, far outstripped the sad, small values my generation have been encouraged to see as aspirational.
I'm proud to have met him, and hope that I can do the best I can to carry forward the vision that he had of productive city forests and edible landscapes replacing the grey concrete jungles and factory farmed 'countrysides' in which so many of us exist.
"Obviously, few of us are in a position to restore the forests.. But tens of millions of us have gardens, or access to open spaces such as industrial wastelands, where trees can be planted. and if full advantage can be taken of the potentialities that are available even in heavily built up areas, new 'city forests' can arise..." 122. The Catalyst - Permaculture
Article describes the permaculture philosophy, outlines its history, and discusses prospects for its future. From Catalyst, a student magazine at Brown University.
http://www.brown.edu/Students/Catalyst/pre2001/archive/spring99/pm.html
text more text One group of these individuals has developed a method of self-sustained living known as permaculture . Unlike many other methods of alternative agriculture, permaculture is not simply a method of food production. It is a complete lifestyle with its own overarching set of beliefs that can be applied to every aspect of one’s life. The term "permaculture" was coined in the late 1970s by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, authors of the first permaculture manual . These philosophers of science believe that "when we left tribal life, we left with it all guides to sensible behavior in the natural world." They believe that we, as a human race, have forgotten how to "evolve self-regulating systems" and that the widespread destruction caused by our current system of agriculture is clear evidence of this. Mollison and Holmgren sought to design a method through which humans might again live within self-regulating natural systems. These men were not modern "Luddites" who desired to reject all of modern science’s technological advances and return to primitive methods of production. On the contrary, they envisioned a lifestyle in which humans would utilize all of this new scientific understanding and their own commonsense to create small systems of food production which would simulate natural ecosystems and be individually tailored to suit the situation of each household. In this type of system the primary concerns would not be mass production and economics but "people care" and "earth care." Because successful permaculture requires great inputs of knowledge of natural systems, creativity, and expertise in a number of different areas, the ideal of "people care" encourages individuals to share both their crop yield and their knowledge and talents. "People care" also encompasses the ideal that, just as an individual should care for the earth, the earth should care and provide for that individual. Each permaculture system is thus developed and personally tailored to suit the needs and desires of the individuals for which it provides.

Quindalup An aboriginal word meaning "Happy Place"
Welcome to Quindalup Permaculture Farm Quindalup is a 134ha (335 acre) retreat situated about three hours drive west of Sydney in NSW, Australia. Close to state forests, national parks and lakes, Quindalup is a quiet and peaceful spot with resident kangaroos, abundant bird life and natural bush land. Several springs provide crystal clear water all year round and more than twelve dams support a variety of aquatic life. An organic vegetable garden and orchard supplies a wide variety of food. Cattle, chickens, ducks, geese, pigs, bees, goats, dogs and a cat are some of the other animals kept on the property. The Jakobi family moved to Quindalup in January 1999 to develop the property as a permaculture farm and education centre. Many friends and supporters have made significant contributions so far and over time we expect that some people will want to stay longer and help us develop Quindalup into a unique Eco-Village. If you want to enjoy a few days in the country learning about permaculture, self-sufficiency and a sustainable lifestyle in a hands on environment by helping us with planting, building, harvesting and general garden work then contact us at this email address...

"Permaculture, a design system that reconciles human communities with the ecological imperatives of a living planet."-Ben Haggard
PERMACULTURE: the use of ecology as the basis for designing integrated systems of food production, housing, appropriate technology, and community development. Permaculture is built upon an ethic of caring for the earth and interacting with the environment in mutually beneficial ways.

Permaculture design is site specific, client specific, and culture specific
Permaculture principles focus on thoughtful designs for small-scale intensive systems which are labor efficient and use biological resources instead of fossil fuels. Designs stress ecological connections and closed energy and material loops. The core of permaculture is design and the working relationships and connections between all things. Each component in a system performs

  • A Worm farm is an easy way to recycle kitchen scraps. In the process it produces liquid and solid fertilizers and worms. Worm farms shouldn't smell, and are convenient for urban, or even balcony, gardens where compost piles might not be appropriate. A Herb Spiral is a simple way to improve your kitchen garden, a spiral of rocks encloses soil in which many species of herbs are planted. The rock warms and dehumidifies the soil. The extended edge, wrapped in on itself provides a wide diversity of conditions, creating high productivity in a small space, but is easy to water and harvest. By growing Bananas in a circle , you can increase production, and avoid the untidyness often associated with Bananas.

We are having successes with plants from the Mediterranean regions, the temperate regions and the sub-tropics. As a part of that process we began accumulating information on useful plants.
