We meet on the 4th Wednesday of each month 7-9pm. Contact Selwyn 926-7876 for details. This is usually at Selwyn's house (5509 Delwood Drive, 78723) but sometimes it moves so keep an eye on the email list. This is a group that is working through the "playbook" and having interesting discussions about the material that we all learned during our Permaculture course. There is currently no charge to attend. If you have not taken a Permaculture course, you may "audit" the study group but be aware that we will not be starting at the beginning and teaching Permaculture... You will definitely learn something so do join us.

Solutions through Permaculture Design
Permaculture design brings our lives back into participation with the Earth. Permaculturists and other environmentalists warn of global destruction unless we learn to live with the Earth rather than continuing to prey upon her. Permaculture trusts that the Earth shows us solutions to halt the destruction of the biosphere while sustaining ourselves in wholesome and fulfilling ways. * Focus * email barking frogs ... email webmaster

91. Leaf Street Urban Community Garden - About The Project
People of the Bentley House Estate and Manchester permaculture Group develop the Leaf Street into community gardens and a space for community activities. Charting process of consultation and growing.
http://www.redbricks.org.uk/organisations/leafst/about.htm
Leaf St. Urban Permaculture Garden
A Potted History
Leaf Street was once a road that ran between Rockdove Ave and Hunmamby Ave. It was turfed over by Manchester City Council three years ago. Approximately an acre, this long strip of green, Leaf Street lies like a blank canvas. Now receiving some creative energy, it's potential has long been recognised by the local community. Last year Manchester Permaculture Group put forward a proposal to the people of the Redbricks (Bentley House Estate) to develop the space into community gardens and a space for community activities. A full Permaculture Design Course was held in Hulme in the summertime, during which time a fun day and community consultation was held on Leaf Street Green.
The first raised bed
This was made on day two of the permaculture course. The branches were collected from nearby windfalls and damaged trees and the soil from Arthur's Wood, a local woodland that is due to be cut down in pursuit of corporate profits by Manchester Airport. We sowed seeds and planted up in the same morning. We had a good crop of beans, various herbs, the birds enjoyed the strawberries and the flowers brightened the place up. The first bed remained near enough intact which is a good indicator that it is safe to press on with the rest of the garden without the fear of vandalism.

What is Permaculture?
Permaculture
is a design system for sustainable land use. It offers an integrated approach to designing productive ecosystems with diversity and stability. Permaculture offers a low energy, resource friendly, high yield approach to designing landscapes for people to provide food, energy, shelter, and other needs. Permaculture systems are designed using a set of principles and ethics devised by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in Australia in 1974. These principles form the framework for sustainable design of any property in any climate, with any soil type. Techniques and strategies will vary from site to site, but the principles of Permaculture design remain a constant.

It is a non-profit community project which has been run entirely by volunteers using organic and permaculture principles. Visitors to the farm are usually staggered by the amount of work that has been done in such a short time, and by the variety and abundance of food crops planted! Members and volunteers, both past and present are to be congratulated! The Farm occupies an area approximately 4 hectares (10 acres) adjacent to Enoggera Creek and Lutwyche Road. The site is infamous because it is always the first places in Brisbane to flood during heavy rain. During the 1974 flood, Northey St was 14 feet under water and houses of the time were badly damaged. As a result the Brisbane City Council resumed the land, turning in into a park. The old backyard mango trees are still there and give welcome respite from the summer sun. As well, more than 1500 fruit trees, bush tucker plants, shrubs and ground covers have been planted. The banks of Breakfast Creek have been regenerated with over 600 rainforest trees endemic to the area. The City Farm provides the opportunity for city dwellers to connect with each other and the environment, demonstrating that ecologically sustainable development can be achieved in the city.
