TOWARDS COMMON GROUND; permaculture AND THE VEGAN WAY. Graeme Sheriff s recently published Edible Ecosystems In Sustainable Agriculture

TOWARDS COMMON GROUND; PERMACULTURE AND THE VEGAN WAY Graeme Sheriff's recently published 'Edible Ecosystems In Sustainable Agriculture', a survey of Permaculture in Britain ( http://www.edibleecosystems.care4free.net /) has highlighted a polarity that exists between vegans and those who use animal products or integrate animals into their systems. Whilst I think most of the time both sides of the debate co-exist (reasonably) happily together, it's an emotive topic, and when it does come to the surface can leading to raised passions, often resulting in hurt all round. The following is extracted from a longer work in progress, and is an attempt at exploring this divide, and hopefully moving towards a more positive and constructive resolution... The current epidemic of Foot And Mouth disease seems to be the latest in an onslaught of meat and animal product related health scares; BSE, E Coli, Salmonella and Swine Fever have all had high profiles in recent years. In this light, the vegan way can seem an attractive path for health reasons, never mind considerations of compassion or the environment. Yet some permaculturists have expressed views stating that "veganism is illogical and is unsustainable other than in a high
energy use society " and that "principles of animal rights are... fine on a personal level, but fail when presented as a prescription for curing the ills of society

Permaculture- A Beginner's Guide
"Permaculture offers a radical approach to food production and urban renewal, water, energy and pollution. It integrates ecology, landscape, organic gardening, architecture and agro-forestry in creating a rich and sustainable way of living. It uses appropriate technology giving high yields for low energy inputs, achieving a resource of great diversity and stability. The design principles are equally applicable to both urban and rural dwellers"- Bill Mollison

Sego Jackson is a farmer, permaculture designer, and director of the Permaculture Institute of North America, located in Clinton, Washington.
ANY HOPE for the emergence of sustainable cultures must be based upon the development of sustainable agricultural systems. No matter how just our relationships with each other, regardless of the quality of our educational experiences, despite our spiritual pursuits and freedoms, the sustainability of our culture is at its root fundamentally dependent on our relationship to the land, and especially on the sustainability of our production of food. One approach to creating a sustainable system of agriculture has been developed by Australian ecologist, Bill Mollison. Influenced by Aboriginal ethics towards the land, painfully aware of the global environmental crisis, and knowledgeable about natural ecologies, Mollison and colleagues began to work out a process by which responsible people could purposefully design their own productive eco- systems in which to live. Mollison termed this process "permanent agriculture" or permaculture. The overall goal of permaculture design is to establish resource and energy conserving (including human energy) landscapes that are agriculturally productive, that take into account and mimic, as much as possible, relationships and processes found in the natural environment, and that approach the diversity, stability and resilience found in natural ecosystems. The underlying philosophy is that we are a part of the natural environment and not separate from it, and that we must work with nature and its processes, rather than against it. To achieve this, Mollison suggests that permaculture needs to be a process "of protracted and thoughtful observation, rather than protracted and thoughtless labor; and of looking at plants and animals in all their functions rather than treating any area as a single product system."

To order this issue ...

Bill Mollison is a living legend. He's known as the genius of permaculture, "the David Brower of Australia," or a crusty old curmudgeon, depending on the source. But whether it's glowing admiration or sneering dismissal, reaction to Mollison is invariably strong. He is clearly one of the most interesting specimens of the human species - which he has spent years studying from a naturalist's behavioral perspective. He passed through Seattle recently with a film crew shooting a documentary about the far-flung successes of permaculture, a radically new (or, some have said, radically old) way of gardening, designing, and living sustainably by cooperating with nature. Ironically, we met in a downtown hotel room - filled with traffic noise - as we stalked a definition of permaculture and considered the eeriness of modern life. For a more detailed exploration, see Mollison's book Permaculture: A Designer's Manual , available for $34.95 (plus $3 shipping) from Permaculture Drylands, PO Box 27371, Tucson, AZ 85726, 602/824-3465.
