129. Dimitri Mendeleev
Contains a biography about the man who discovered the periodic law and developed the periodic table.
http://www.zephyrus.co.uk/dimitrimendeleev.html
Dimitri Ivanovitch Mendeleev So, who was Dimitri Mendeleev The youngest, of at least, fourteen children, Dimitri Ivanovitch Mendeleev was born at Tobolsk Siberia , on 7th February, 1834 . His father, Ivan, was the director of the local gymnasium, and his mother, Marya , (born Marya Korniliev ) came from a family that had introduced glass and paper making to Siberia . Ivan died when Dimitri was quite young and Marya had to return to work in order to support her family. Through family connections, she managed the Korniliev glass factory at Aremziansk Dimitri was educated at the gymnasium in Tobolsk , where he showed great interest in mathematics and physics. He also learned a lot about glass and glass blowing from the family factory. His brother-in-law, Bessargin , was also an influence in that he taught the young Mendeleev current science topics. By the age of fourteen, Dimitri showed great scientific promise and his mother was determined that he should receive a good education. Her plans were thwarted when the glass factory was destroyed by fire. Within a few months

Lecturer BSc, University of London; C.P.G.S. University of Cambridge; M. Phil, University of Southampton; Ph.D. from King's College, University of London; Postdoctoral Fellowship, California Institute of Technology; Editor of Foundations of Chemistry . Previous positions in US: Bradley University and Purdue University Research In recent years there has been a worldwide upsurge of interest in philosophical aspects of chemistry. In my own work I examine the extent to which chemical concepts can be explained through fundamental theories in physics, especially quantum mechanics. I also focus on the implications of this work on chemical education and the manner in which chemistry is presented in textbooks and general chemistry courses. More specifically, I am interested in issues surrounding the teaching of atomic and electronic structure. I also work on historical and philosophical aspects of the Periodic System of the Elements and several other areas in history and philosophy of chemistry. Element Information Click on an element in the table to get informationfor that element. Data are displayed below the table. Coloring
http://www.dartmouth.edu/~chemlab/info/resources/p_table/Periodic.html
NOTE: You need to be using a Java-enabled browser to view this applet Element Information
Click on an element in the table to get information for that element. Data are displayed below the table. Coloring by Numbers
Use the shading control to shade the table according to the values of the physical properties of the elements. The color scale indicates the colors assigned to the relative values of the property being displayed along with the maximum and minimum values. The actual colors and degree of shading will depend upon the computer hardware and browser software being used. Shading by atomic number is displayed when the applet begins. Jigsaw Puzzle
Pressing the "New Puzzle" button will scramble the elements. The object is to drag each element to its proper location in the table. Several different subsets of elements may be selected. Pressing the "Solve" button will cause the currently selected element to return to its proper location in the table. Pressing the "Solve All" sends all remaining puzzles pieces back to their proper locations. Molar Mass Calculator
Click on the "Formula" check box to calculate molar masses for compounds. To enter an element in a compound, click on that element in the table. Use the digit and parentheses buttons to complete a formula. The formula entry blank does not accept keyboard input. You will have to use your pointing device (mouse) to "click out" the formula. The resulting formula mass is rounded to the precision of the least precise atomic mass.

This version of the Periodic table is based on that recommended by the Commission on the Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry and published in IUPAC Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, Recommendations 1990. Atomic weights are quoted to five significant figures. For more precise values see the table of 2001 recommended values (see Pure Appl. Chem., , 1107-1122). The names of elements 104-109 were agreed in 1997 (see Pure Appl. Chem., , 2471-2473). For elements with no stable nuclides the mass of the longest-lived isotope has been quoted in brackets. However three such elements (Th, Pa, and U) do have a characteristic terrestrial isotopic composition, and for these an atomic weight is tabulated. The names for elements 110 to 114 are temporary and are based on the 1978 recommendations (see Pure Appl. Chem.
