Online Particle Physics Information
Compiled by Revised: May 2002 This list describes a broad set of online resources that are of value to the particle physics community. It is prescreened and highly selective. It describes the scope, size, and organization of the resources so that efficient choices can be made amongst many sites which may appear similar. A resource is excluded if it provides information primarily of interest to only one institution. Databases and resources focusing primarily on accelerator physics have been excluded in deference to the excellent compilation at the World Wide Web Virtual Library of Beam Physics and Accelerator Technology My thanks to Betty Armstrong, Particle Data Group, the SLAC Library staff, and the many particle physics Web site and database maintainers who have all given me their generous assistance. Please send comments and corrections by e-mail to pkreitz@slac.stanford.edu.

La Thuile Aosta Valley March 4-10, 2001
This is the fifteenth of Workshops in Particle Physics being held yearly at the Planibel Hotel of La Thuile, Aosta Valley. La Thuile is a beautiful mountain village located 1450 m a.sl., about 40 km north of the city of Aosta, on the road to the Mont Blanc. The hotel is at the bottom of a vast skiing area connected with the French ski resort La Rosiere and it is an outstanding complex for winter sports and congresses. The Rencontres will bring together about 120 active experimentalists and theorists to review the status and the future prospects in elementary particle physics. As a special event this year, a session will be devoted to celebrate the 65th birthday of J. Tran Thanh Van, founder of the Rencontres de Moriond which were the first in a series of winter conferences in Particle Physics.

Particle physics and astrophysics go hand in hand: studying the universe at the smallest and biggest scales. Have you ever wondered how often you could split a grain of sand into smaller pieces? Have you asked yourself what the sky is made of? Perhaps you have dreamed of traveling backwards in time? Physicists are as curious as you are. They look for answers to questions that people have pondered since they first began to wonder about the world and their place within it. It often seems that for every answer physicists find, two new questions arise. Exploring the nature of nature (video, 4 min.) Particle physicists try to understand the nature of nature at the smallest scales possible. Today, we know that atoms do not represent the smallest unit of matter. Particles called quarks and leptons seem to be the fundamental building blocks - but perhaps there is something even smaller. Physicists are still far from understanding why a proton has about 2,000 times more mass than an electron. And on top of it all, scientists suspect a whole new class of undiscovered supersymmetric particles to complete the subatomic family. Empty space, we have discovered, is actually not empty at all. Quantum effects constantly produce particles and antiparticles "out of nothing," only to have them disappear few moments later. And space itself can either be almost flat or curved, depending on the amount of matter it contains.

These notes form an introduction to cosmology with special emphasis on large scale structure, the cmb anisotropy and inflation. In some places a basic familiarity with particle physics is assumed, but otherwise no special knowledge is needed. Most of the material in the first two sections can be found in several texts, except that the discussion of dark matter and the cosmological constant is more up to date. Most of that in the remaining sections can be found in a review of structure formation and inflation done with Andrew Liddle, which describes original work by various authors including ourselves and Ewan Stewart. The reader is referred to these works for more detail, and a very complete list of references.

What's New: D0 achieves physics results through reprocessing >500M events using SAMGrid, JIM and Grid tools The Particle Physics Data Grid Collaboratory Pilot (PPDG) is developing and deploying production Grid systems vertically integrating experiment-specific applications, Grid technologies,Grid and facility computation and storage resources to form effective end-to-end capabilities. PPDG is a collaboration of computer scientists with a strong record in Grid technology, and physicists with leading roles in the software and network infrastructures for major high-energy and nuclear experiments. Our goals and plans are guided by the immediate and medium-term needs of the physics experiments and by the research and development agenda of the computer science groups. Ongoing status and achievements are given in the project's Quarterly Reports.

CCLRC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
Welcome to the Particle Physics Department at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory , part of CCLRC
The Particle Physics Department (PPD) at RAL is responsible for co-ordinating the UK experimental programme in particle physics . It provides general infrastructure for the UK particle physics community and support to groups at UK universities . Physicists and support staff from RAL work on experiments in collaboration with university groups doing research in particle physics and contributing to the training of research students
About Particle Physics
Particle Physics strives to understand the structure of matter at the deepest possible level. Probing the very shortest (sub-nuclear) distance scales requires the very highest energies and Particle Physics experiments often (but not always) make use of high energy particle accelerators in this country and abroad.
