Ask an Expert: Paleontology
CLN's "Ask an Expert" page has about 100 links to specialists in the field who can serve as a valuable source of curricular expertise for both students and teachers. Questions/answers on Paleontology may be found in our "All Subjects" section at the top of the page, the "Science" section (see General Science), as well as the general "Reference" section.
Dinosaur Theme Page
This CLN "Theme Page" has links to two types of resources related to the study of dinosaurs. Students and teachers will find curricular resources (information, content...) to help them learn about this topic. In addition, there are also links to instructional materials (lesson plans) which will help teachers provide instruction in this theme.
[The] Field Museum: Online Exhibits
The Field Museum of Natural History (Chicago) has a number of online exhibits that will be of interest to paleontology students. Check out "Sue on the Web" for a T.Rex exhibit and "Life Over Time" for information about dinosaurs in general.
Paleontology without Walls
Take a 'Virtual Tour' of this University of California museum. Their "On-line Exhibits" contain large amounts of information on paleontology, searchable by phylogeny, geology or evolutionary theory as your paradigm.

I hope it proves useful to students, teachers, fossil collectors, paleontologists, and anyone else with rocks in their heads. I myself am a long-time fossil enthusiast with a special interest in dinosaur tracks (I have a web site devoted to my work on Texas tracks and the related Paluxy "man track" controversy ). Paleontology in the News
This is a selection of stories, subject to the following rules. First, I don't guarantee close daily coverage of everything that happens (because I have things to do apart from maintaining this Web page). Second, the site has to be generally accessible. (Many journals, like Science and Nature , make new papers accessible only to people or institutions who have paid a subscription to the written version.) Third, I choose newspapers and news sites that tend to keep their pages accessible for more than two weeks over those that do not. Fourth, I keep older articles archived for varying lengths of time, depending how important I think they are (or interesting, at least); whether they have been updated or made redundant; and whether the site has dropped them. For example, I've had to give up on the New York Times . It is a fine paper, but its new policy is to take off its stories within DAYS and then charge for access to them. Similar pages on my web site are

    ICE AGE PALEONTOLOGY
    OF SOUTHEAST ALASKA
    Timothy H. Heaton
    University of South Dakota
Southeast Alaska is a spectacular region of glacier-cut fjords and islands covered with dense rainforest. Its primary industries are tourism, fishing, and logging. There are few roads through the region, and travel is primarily by boat and float plane. It is also the home to Tlingit and Haida native groups, famous for their totems and their marine and forest adaptations. Limestone areas of Southeast Alaska have developed an impressive karst topography containing many caves. In the late 1980s the Tongass Cave Project (a joint venture of the National Speleological Society and Tongass National Forest) was created to locate, explore, and survey these caves. Caving expeditions have been conducted every summer since that time. In 1990 the first vertebrate fossils were found, and a major research effort began to explore this new scientific resource. Large-scale paleontological and archaeological excavations have been conducted on northern Prince of Wales Island, and the research is now expanding to other islands and coastal mainland areas of Southeast Alaska. The goal of this research is to establish a complete chronology of mammals, birds, and fish living in the region before, during, and following the Last Glacial Maximum, and up to the present day. This work is helping to establish the timing and extent of glaciation, the presence of Ice Age coastal refugia for land mammals, and the possibility that humans first entered North America by this coastal route.

The Department of Paleontology houses collections of fossil vertebrates, invertebrates, and plants collected primarily from Mesozoic- through Cenozoic-aged sites in southern California and northern Baja California, Mexico. Especially significant are the department's collections of marine vertebrates. Presently the collections include over 77,800 numbered species lots. The specimens have been recovered from a total of 2,890 recorded collecting localities, primarily from southern California and northern Baja California, Mexico. There are 578 primary and 537 secondary types. The collection is under the care of , Curator of the Paleontology Department and Director of the Department of Paleontological Services. The curatorship of the Paleontology Department is endowed as the Joshua L. Baily, Jr., Chair of Paleontology.
