The Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology is the only paleontology museum in the world located on a high school campus. It is one of three nonprofit institutions that comprise The Webb Schools , the others being Vivian Webb School for girls and Webb School of California for boys.
The mission of the museum is to serve Southern California as an educational resource, to act as a center of paleontological research for the international scientific community, and to provide a unique curricular ingredient to The Webb Schools.
The museum is named after Dr. Raymond M. Alf, a math and science teacher who first took Webb students to the desert in search of fossils in the early 1930's. In 1937, Alf and student Bill Webb found the skull of a new species of fossil pig, or peccary. The discovery of "The Peccary" sparked in Alf a life-long commitment to the study of paleontology and led to the founding of the museum that bears his name. After the discovery of "The Peccary," student fossil collecting trips were known as peccary trips. Over 95% of the 70,000 fossils in the museum's collection were unearthed by students and staff on peccary trips.
In 1998, the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology gained national accreditation from the American Association of Museums, the highest honor a museum can achieve. Thus, the Alf Museum is now the only accredited museum located on a high school campus in the United States.

The preservation of fossils and the natural geologic processes are included in this mission. Indeed, the diversity of the fossil record in the National Park System is great. Petrified leaves, wood, pollen, shells, bones, teeth, eggshells, tracks, borrows, and coprolites have been found in more than 145 National Park System units. Collectively, these fossils provide a comprehensive history of life in the areas that are now national parks from the Precambrian stromatolites in Glacier National Park to mammal bones from the Ice Age throughout the Alaskan parks.

GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES
SHULER MUSEUM OF PALEONTOLOGY
FACILITIES The Shuler Museum of Paleontology maintains research and teaching collections in microfossils, fossil invertebrates, fossil plants, and recent and fossil vertebrates. Active areas of current research involve Mesozoic and Cenozoic vertebrates and plant macrofossils, and palynology. Vertebrate collections in the Shuler Museum of Paleontology have special strengths in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic of Texas, Mesozoic of Southwestern U.S., and representative and research collections from active projects outside the U.S., including Kenya, Malawi, Cameroon, Pakistan, Mexico, and Yemen. The collections and personnel from the Shuler Museum are actively used and involved in outreach programs through area public museums. One such project is the development of a traveling exhibit with the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History entitled Lone Star Dinosaurs
Facilities of the Shuler Museum of Paleontology include laboratories for fossil preparation, molding and casting, pollen extraction and anlysis, and morphometric analysis. 115. Robert Hooke
Biography, specialising on his interest in biology, from the University of California Museum of paleontology.
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/history/hooke.html
R obert H ooke (1635-1703) No portrait survives of Robert Hooke. His name is somewhat obscure today, due in part to the enmity of his famous, influential, and extremely vindictive colleague, Sir Isaac Newton. Yet Hooke was perhaps the single greatest experimental scientist of the seventeenth century. His interests knew no bounds, ranging from physics and astronomy, to chemistry, biology, and geology, to architecture and naval technology; he collaborated or corresponded with scientists as diverse as Christian Huygens, Antony van Leeuwenhoek , Christopher Wren, Robert Boyle, and Isaac Newton. Among other accomplishments, he invented the universal joint, the iris diaphragm, and an early prototype of the respirator; invented the anchor escapement and the balance spring, which made more accurate clocks possible; served as Chief Surveyor and helped rebuild London after the Great Fire of 1666; worked out the correct theory of combustion; devised an equation describing elasticity that is still used today ("Hooke's Law"); assisted Robert Boyle in studying the physics of gases; invented or improved meteorological instruments such as the barometer, anemometer, and hygrometer; and so on. He was the type of scientist that was then called a virtuoso able to contribute findings of major importance in any field of science. It is not surprising that he made important contributions to biology and to paleontology.

Introduction to the North Dakota Geological Survey
Fossil Resource Management Program
The North Dakota Geological Survey Fossil Resource Management Program was inaugurated in 1983 primarily in response to concern about the historic and ongoing removal of fossils from North Dakota. The program has three primary objectives: 1) To promote public understanding and awareness of the importance of North Dakota’s fossil resources through a variety of educational activities including fossil exhibits, tours, and presentations; 2) To identify and preserve North Dakota’s significant fossil sites and specimens; and 3) To conduct research to determine the kinds of organisms that inhabited North Dakota at various times in the geologic past and to determine the types of climates and environments in which those organisms lived. Two laws were passed in 1989 that have greatly enhanced the North Dakota Geological Survey’s ability to manage the State’s paleontological resources. The first of these laws, North Dakota’s Paleontological Resource Protection Act (Section 54-17.3, N.D.C.C.), gives the North Dakota Industrial Commission, acting through the office of the State Geologist, the responsibility to protect paleontological resources located on land owned by the State or its political subdivisions. Also in 1989, the North Dakota Geological Survey was given statutory responsibility to operate and maintain a public repository for North Dakota fossils (Section 54-17.4, N.D.C.C.). The North Dakota State Fossil Collection is housed at the North Dakota Heritage Center in Bismarck. (

Manuals for Coordinating Authors Since its inception in the late 1940s, the aim of the Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology has been to present a comprehensive and authoritative yet compact statement of knowledge concerning groups of invertebrate fossils. Professor Raymond C. Moore, the project's founder, envisaged the Treatise as ultimately comprising three hefty volumes with a total of some 3,000 pages. The Treatise, expanding in fifty years beyond Moore's wildest dream, now comprises 46 volumes, involves the work of more than 300 authors worldwide, and occupies more than 1.3 meters of shelf space. Another dozen or so volumes are in various stages of preparation, and scarcely a month goes by in which the editor does not receive a tentative feeler from a paleontologist offering to revise a previous, now-outdated volume. Professor Moore concluded his 1951 report to the Geological Society of America's Council with the words, "The Treatise progresses." His words are as true today as they were then.
