For most of the Lake Winnipeg basin, the changes in relative elevation have been tens of metres ranging up to 50 m in the south. An independent southern and central Lake Winnipeg were first impounded behind local sills (see panels for 7700 and 5500 years). These lakes drained northward (blue arrows) over the sills into northern Lake Winnipeg. By 2100 years BP, northern and southern Lake Winnipeg had coalesced to a common water level. Regional tilting and the concomitant submergence of the South Basin are predicted to continue. Last Modified: 2002-03-18 Important notices

Extras include an entertaining and informative commentary by David Friedman and Mike Vraney (apparently distributors were disappointed in Miss Jansson's "charms"); a wild trailer collection, some fun and campy (All Women Are Bad, Confessions of a Psycho Cat, Banned, Curse of Her Flesh), some REALLY sick-looking (The Pick-Up, Ultimate Degenerate), some just stupid (Sex Killer, Sock It To Me); two OK shorts, "Intimate Diary of Artist's Models" (4:00, color) featuring "Ajax" and "Sandy" from 'Scum' in standard nudie-cutie photo hijinks (see what's under Sandy's scarf!), and Naked Fury (10:00, color) wherein a photographer shoots photos of twin girls wrestling in their undies; and another 8-minute Trash-O-Rama exploitation art gallery. Prints of both features exhibit the usual light speckling and blemishing, but are otherwise plenty sharp with excellent tonal values and detail. A must-have for exploitation and Adults Only fans! Scum Like It Hot!

Much of our work in China concerns the extent of the North China Block through time and determining the collision and suturing of South China, North China and Siberia. This paleogeographic map, from Zhao et al. (1990, see References), shows the positions of the major Chinese blocks relative to other blocks bordering the Paleo-Tethys Ocean in Late Permian time, a reconstruction based on paleomagnetic and geologic evidence.

    Palaeogeography
Palaeogeography is the geography of the Earth in ancient times, so tries to establish the arrangement of the continents back through time.
There had been a time when the continents were different, Rincewind understood, and then they'd sort of shuffled more comfortably together, like puppies in a basket"
    ("Sourcery", Terry Pratchett)
Palaeogeography is a science that becomes harder the further back we go, as evidence is lost 'in the mists of time', and into the interior of the Earth. However; its study has produced many lines of evidence which have led to the construction of a sequence of theoretical maps, showing how the Earth looked in prehistoric times. Whilst different map sequences show differences caused by uncertainties in many areas, we have high confidence in the overall picture presented. This section covers a brief overview of the 'dance of the continents' in Mesozoic to Cenozoic times, and is illustrated with plate tectonic maps by C. R. Scotese, from the PALEOMAP Project (www.scotese.com)

Late Precambrian Animation (750 mya - 540 mya)
    Rodinia Breakup - Pannotia Assembly
(to run animation, drag mouse across image)
This animation shows the motions of the continents during the Late Precambrian. (Be patient, it may take a minute or so to download the Java applet and images to your computer.) 750 million years ago the supercontinent of Rodinia broke apart. Half of the sundered supercontinent (the half that included North America) went south and crossed the South Pole. The other half drifted northward towards the North Pole. Because so much land was near the poles, the Late Precambrian was an Ice House World - much of the Earth was covered by ice. Eventually the two halves collided with the Congo continent (Central Africa) and a new supercontinent was born - Pannotia. Pannotia began to break apart at the very end of the Precambrian. The Paleozoic began (540 mya) with 4 new continents: Gondwana (the core of Pannotia), Laurentia (North America), Baltica (Northern Europe), and Siberia. The blue areas are deep ocean basins. The light blue areas are flooded continental shelves and oceanic plateaus. The tan areas are land, and the red areas are mountains. Watch North America (Laurentia) head towards the South Pole . Also note the volcanic island chains and extensive mountain belt that was formed by Late Precambrian collisions (Pan-African orogeny).
