Popular and professional interest in vertebrate paleobiology and paleoanthropology has burgeoned in the past twenty years. Groups such as the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology and the Paleoanthropology Society have seen dramatic rises in membership and meeting attendance, and papers and symposia on various aspects of both topics are increasingly common at professional meetings of related disciplines (e.g., American Association of Physical Anthropologists, American and International Quaternary Studies Associations, Society for American Archaeology, Society for the Study of Evolution). Although journals such as Journal of Human Evolution and Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology may issue monographs (requiring financial support) or special issues with a topical focus (and the new online PaleoAnthropology holds much promise), there is no consistent outlet for premier monographs and collections in book format in either much less both of these sister disciplines. This series will fill the gap by publishing books of the highest quality in these and related areas.

Washington, DC 20078 Dear Sir: Thank you for your latest submission to the Institute, labeled "211-D, layer seven, next to the clothesline post. Hominid skull." We have given this specimen a careful and detailed examination, and regret to inform you that we disagree with your theory that it represents "conclusive proof of the presence of Early Man in Charleston County two million years ago." Rather, it appears that what you have found is the head of a Barbie doll, of the variety one of our staff, who has small children, believes to be the "Malibu Barbie". It is evident that you have given a great deal of thought to the analysis of this specimen, and you may be quite certain that those of us who are familiar with your prior work in the field were loathe to come to contradiction with your findings. However, we do feel that there are a number of physical attributes of the specimen which might have tipped you off to it's modern origin:
  • The material is molded plastic. Ancient hominid remains are typically fossilized bone.

Definition: Paleoanthropology is a branch of anthropology dealing with fossil hominids. It is the science of human evolution. Thus, paleoanthropologist and paleoanthropological are appropriate noun and adjective. On this page you'll find links to some of the well respected websites dealing with Paleoanthropology. Enjoy!
Paleoanthropology Outline is a great page to start. It gives the definition of hominids from Australopithecus to Homo sapiens sapiens in a timeline that's easy to follow. Each hominid is described and many pictures are provided. Great for a student working on a report on the history of evolution, who wants to get a sense of the history of each hominid group.

The controversial Pintubi-1 skull of Australia (pictured above) is a paradox of paleoanthropology. As a hominid “fossil”, it’s so young that it has been assigned to a tribe that survived into the last century. A modern aboriginal skull. Yet it’s morphology could be described as archaic. The skull’s history is shrouded in mystery (not unlike others from “the down under”). Even without documentation, it’s age and Australoid identity are indisputable. The man it inha bited lived An anthropologic paradox very recently (in paleo-terms), likely in the 1800’s or later. It is in perfect condition and shows no signs of antiquity. In his book In the Footsteps of Eve Dr Lee Berger considers "a line of couples representing the 200,000 generations of hominids that have lived on the Earth since bipedalism began." He points out the difficulties of identifying morphological changes across the 400,000 individuals from the "existing fossil record" which represents "fewer that 5,000 individuals" many of whom are not actually part of that direct heritage. In addition, the fossil record occurs in clusters, both geographically and chronologically paleoanthropologists are essentially joining dots to make a recognisable picture. That they are prepared to make claims about the evolution of modern humans based on such sparse evidence must require a degree of arrogance that would be frowned upon by other sciences. The story of hominid evolution is also a fickle one. When Raymond Dart discovered the first example of

Posted by razib at 12:18 AM postCount('482'); Tacky tacky journalism. Very few have ever believed the 62 kyr data for Mungo, so this is certainly not news. But then the last paragraph is completely gratuitous: " Two leading critics of his theory, the archaeologists Dr. Allison Brooks and Dr. Sally McBrearty, did not respond yesterday to messages seeking comment." I don't know about McGrearty, but Brooks was stuck in air traffic hell consequent to the snow in the east. This is blatantly a journalist trying to generate an issue where there is none. The interesting fact about the colonization of Australia is that they bore Neanderthal technology instead of the fancy Upper Paleolithic stuff that is the basis of Richard Klein's ideas about a "creative explosion". M. Abdelsalam, University of Texas at Dallas. Walter and colleagues reported in the May 4 Nature the latest development in a broader investigation of East African Rift geology. “I began this project — with Dick Buffler at UT-Austin’s Institute for Geophysics — with the notion that we wanted to do it a bit differently than had been done before in East Africa,” Walter says. His geologic and anthropologic studies in other fossil and artifact-rich East African rift valleys convinced him that geologic units within Eritrea would also yield an archaeological bounty. “We were of course interested and fascinated by the human origins potential of Eritrea, but we recognized that we have an opportunity and obligation as geologists to bring more to the story than the fossils and artifacts alone.” As a result, he and his colleagues investigated the geological history of the Danakil Rift Valley of Eritrea, including the origin and evolution of Cenozoic rifting, sedimentary basin formation and local rift volcanism, and the effects of climate change as recorded in the region’s sediments, fossils and artifacts. “We are, in short, after the big picture,” Walter says.

I just want to add a short comment on the subject of paleoanthropology,
that is, the scientific study of fossils and artifacts of early humans
    and their ancestry.
I have noticed all my life that several times per year, a new discovery
is made in this field, and it causes a sensation in the press, and
among theologians and other communities. Then it is refuted by a new
    discovery the next year.
Theory in paleoanthropology must be very frustrating, like building
sand castles on the beach. As soon as you have a nice structure,
a new wave comes along and destroys it. And all the lay people and theologians are always standing around watching you. The reason this happens, of course, is that the database is so thin. (One piece of a jawbone here, one bit of DNA there, etc.)
