Dear Mr. Conrad:
Thank you for your latest submission to the Institute, labeled "211-D, layer seven, next to the clothesline post. Hominid skull." We have given this specimen a careful and detailed examination, and regret to inform you that we disagree with your theory that it represents "conclusive proof of the presence of Early Man in Charleston County two million years ago."
Rather, it appears that what you have found is the head of a Barbie doll, of the variety one of our staff, who has small children, believes to be the "Malibu Barbie". It is evident that you have given a great deal of thought to the analysis of this specimen, and you may be quite certain that those of us who are familiar with your prior work in the field were loathe to come to contradiction with your findings. However, we do feel that there are a number of physical attributes of the specimen which might have tipped you off to its modern origin:
1. The material is molded plastic. Ancient hominid remains are typically fossilized bone.

The main focus is on the evolution of man, from tertiary to pleistocene. Linking data from interdisciplinary field- and laboratory projects serves to create models that can help to classify prehistoric evidences (fossils) by their functional development.

Mail me (Sandy Hodges)
The Pleistocene:
dog domestication
Information on the DNA of wolves and dogs was reported in Vila, et al. 1997. SOURCE: Dogs were domesticated from grey wolves ( Canis lupus ); not from coyotes or jackals, and not from the Ethiopian wolf, Canis simensis LINEAGES: Every breed is a mixture of many DNA types, so the original lines of descent were mixed before modern breeds were formed. The Vila et al. paper classed the DNA types into 4 groups. [] Group IV, a lineage that occurs in a few European breeds, is very close to some wolves of Romania and western Russia. This could have been a separate domestication. More likely, a hunter brought home a female wolf pup, which grew up and mated with dogs. Either way, it is quite recent, no more than 20,000 years. [] Group III is found mostly among northern breeds, such as Alaskan and Siberian Huskies, some German Shepherds, a Jamthund; but also in one of the Mexican Hairless. This could also result from a cross with already domesticated dogs, but it is older, on the order of 50,000 years. [] Group I is the most ancient and diverse lineage. The Vila paper has a tree showing relations of the wolf and dog types. We can compare the branches of this tree with the geographical origins of the dogs (as indicated by their breed); there does seem to be some correlation. The 'bootstrap support' for this lineage tree is low, which means that other trees would fit the data almost as well. But looking at the data, there seem to be characteristic European vs. southern patterns. The tree shows two main branches, with some left over.

Welcome Part of the Biological Anthropology Program , the Paleoanthropology Laboratory serves as the locus for a broad range of activities focusing on the evolution of hominoids, including hominins, as well as other mammals. Collaborations with other Program labs ( functional morphology primate behavioral and reproductive ecology , isotopic and materials research, genetics and genomics), as well as with other universities ( Poitiers Boston University ), make possible interdisciplinary approaches to questions covering phylogenetics, systematics, behavioral reconstruction, broad patterns of faunal change and evolution, and paleoecology. Fieldwork is strongly encouraged of all students, and is normally readily arranged.
