LNHS Ornithological Recorders Checklist of Birds of the London Area Gazetteer of LBR Sites Ornithological Weblinks General Introduction to London Ornithology The area of Greater London is covered by the London Natural History Society who publish the London Bird Report. The report being based on a 20 mile radius from St Pauls Cathedral has covered the same area since its first publication. It therefore extends into parts of Berks/Bucks, Essex, Herts, Kent and Surrey. The report covers an area of Surrey, that was previously in Middlesex which is not covered by the Surrey Bird Report (which is based on the old vice County of Surrey). The report also covers other small areas that are omitted from other reports due to county boundary changes, but also overlaps with the bird reports covering these respective Counties. The East, both north and south of the Thames is dominated by the remaining Thames-side marshes which still attract, but in much reduced numbers Raptors, Owls and other coastal species. The north is dominated by the Lea Valley with its complex of Gravel Pits and Reservoirs. The West by the gravel pit complexes in the Colne Valley and the West London and Surrey reservoirs and adjacent gravel pits that extend from the M4, south-west towards Molesey. The south is primarily known for Beddington SF, which is in the slow process of being turned into a Country Park, and remains to be seen whether ornithologically it will remain as important as it is at present.

http://www.inhs.uiuc.edu/cbd/main/geninfo/ornith.html
Ornithology
Ornithology is a zoological science that studies those creatures belonging to the Class Aves, much better known as birds. Birds, the only vertebrates that have feathers, are generally divided into two major groups. Ostriches, Emus, Dodos and Kiwis are ratites, birds that lack that conspicuous keel-like extension on the breast bone and lack the ability to fly. The vast majority of the birds, however, are non-ratites and possess the keel to which the powerful muscles that power the wings are attached. All-in-all, there are over 9200 extant species of birds divided into 30 orders and 174 families. Their ability to fly has allowed them to colonize every land mass on earth including the Arctic and Antarctic and some, like the Penguins, have adapted an aquatic lifestyle coming to shore only to breed and raise young. Fossil evidence of the ancestors of modern birds indicates that they were contemporaneous with dinosaurs. Indeed, evidence is mounting that these feathered creatures are in fact the highly evolved living incarnation of the terrible lizards. This long evolutionary history has allowed for the development of the many unique morphological, physical and behavioral attributes in birds that make the science of ornithology such an interesting vocation. Ornithology
Collection History Search the Collection Catalog The Ornithology collection at the Peabody Museum is among the most comprehensive in North America, and has international significance in several areas including skeletal and pickled (wet preserves) specimens. Overall, the collection contains material for more than 6,500 species, over 70 percent of the birds of the world. Skin Collection: the old Yale University collection of some 6,000 to 8,000 skins has grown to over 100,000 since 1950. There is excellent taxonomic coverage and good geographic coverage with major holdings from the Philippines (7,500), Tanzania (5,000), India (6,000), Borneo (4,500), South Africa (4,000), Atlantic islands (2,300), Laos (3,700), Thailand (4,300), Mexico (4,200), Greece (2,700), New Guinea (3,600), Argentina (4,500), Brazil (4,300), and West Indies (2,000). Within the USA only Connecticut (4,000), and California (1,000) are represented by substantial numbers of skins. Skeleton Collection: the skeleton collection contains just over 9,000 specimens representing about 1,900 species. All but a handful of specimens are post-1950 and more than fifty percent are post-1965. There is good geographic representation with collections from Argentina (270 specimens; 110 species), Australia (228; 96), Brazil (735; 122), Dominican Republic (142), Kenya (192; 114), New Guinea (1217; 202), New Zealand (146), Thailand (163). In the USA, collections are from Arizona (273), California (484; 97), Connecticut (2345; 21), Maryland (100), Massachusetts (130), New Jersey (130), and New York (130).

San Francisco, CA 94118 The Department of Ornithology and Mammalogy was established in 1853 with the creation of the California Academy of Sciences. After the 1906 earthquake and fire, which destroyed most of the original collections of birds and mammals, the department was reborn with the resurrection of the new Academy of Sciences. As a world renown repository for specimens and their accompanying information, the department's collections currently house over 105,000 specimens of birds and over 30,000 specimens of mammals. The department also houses a modern bioacoustics laboratory and an extensive sound library of over 4,000 recordings. Aside from maintaining these collections, department staff and associates are involved in various scientific studies, conservation efforts, and international research projects. Over 120 countries are represented by specimens in the collections, but the strengths of the department are its extensive holdings of birds and mammals from western North America, as well as important collections from Mexico and Central America, the Galapagos Islands, the Solomon Islands, China, Myanmar, the Philippines, and eastern Africa.

Much has been written about the plight of the “cheery cockney sparrow”.  However, the fall in numbers of House Sparrows is by no means restricted to London.  Throughout the country, we have Garden BirdWatchers bemoaning the loss of this most familiar of garden birds.  We estimate that there are ten million fewer House Sparrows in the UK than there were twenty-five years ago! See 50% Decline in Suburban Gardens Why the declines? Recent BTO work for DEFRA has revealed some interesting discrepancies between different parts of the country and across different habitats.  We hope that by examining these regional variations we should start to reveal the reasons for the House Sparrow’s troubles.  We know, for instance, that
  • There have been 50% declines in farmland and gardens The declines in gardens started later than in farmland There have been more rapid changes in suburban gardens than in urban gardens In some areas of the country House Sparrows are actually doing rather well.

About IFO
Goals From the founder Contact us Workshops About the ABA Institute for Field Ornithology The Institute for Field Ornithology (IFO) is operated by the American Birding Association, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, with the goal of teaching birders about birds in their natural habitat. Founded in 1983 by ABA Member Charles Duncan at the University of Maine at Machias, the IFO has become a recognized leader in ornithological education. The IFO has a proven track record of successful workshops in the United States and in other countries in the western hemisphere. IFO workshops are designed to provide a comprehensive look at bird biology, including life history, ecology, behavior, and field identification. Most workshops include an emphasis on field identification and the natural history and conservation of birds. Instructional time is split approximately equally between field and classroom sessions.

Skye Birds - A Birding Guide to the Island of Skye This website is dedicated to the birds which find a niche in the in the wild and sometimes harsh environment which makes the Island of Skye so unique. Though many aspects of Skye's geology, topography, culture and history have been extensively studied, other than for a few key species, little has ever been published about its bird life. The objective of this website is to highlight the wide variety of birds which can be seen and where to see them; to encourage locals and visitors to record their bird observations; to stimulate involvement in fieldwork; and to contribute to the conservation and protection of a number of rare and spectactular birds so that future generations can enjoy birding, against the most dramatic backdrop in Britain.
In 2004 there is a Hen Harrier Breeding Survey throughout the UK.

There was also a report of a single bird seen near Sligachan on 18th April - this species is now extremely scarce in the Highlands and all sightings are being collated as an add-on to the current Hen Harrier breeding census - all records are therefore extremely valuable.

Introduction to the Aves
The Birds
The vertebrate class Aves includes the birds, an extremely distinctive and successful clade, with an estimated 9000 species worldwide, including the snowy owl pictured here. Although descended from the dinosaurs , birds have evolved remarkable specializations for flight: a unique "one-way" breathing system, light yet strong hollow bones, a skeleton in which many bones are fused or lost, powerful flight muscles, and most importantly feathers. Click on the buttons below to learn more about birds. You can navigate deeper into the birds by selecting "Systematics"!
