POST CONFERENCE REPORT Oil Spill 2004 Fourth International Conference on Hydrocarbon Spills, Modelling,
28 - 30 April 2004
Alicante, Spain

Organised by Wessex Institute of Technology, UK The University of Alicante, Spain OPENING ADDRESS The Fourth International Conference on Hydrocarbon Spills, Modelling, Analysis and Control (Oil Spill) took place recently in Alicante, organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology of the UK and the University of Alicante, with the support of the Caja de Ahorros de Mediterraneo. The Conference Chairmen were Professor Carlos Brebbia from WIT, Prof Yolanda Villacampa and Professor Jose Miguel Saval, from the University of Alicante. Carlos opened the conference by explaining the importance of the topic for the Alicante Region and hoping that the participants would have occasion to discuss these problems with the colleagues from the University during the meeting. The danger of oil pollution in coastal areas such as that around Alicante cannot be overstressed. Oil spills are not only expensive to remediate but have negative long-term effects in zones depending on tourism and fishing for their livelihood. Numerous and frequent oil spills have shown the extent of the damage inflicted on the environment, when a large volume of oil is released over a short period of time and, in particular, the susceptibility of certain environments, such as coastal regions, to these spills. Although oil spills are frequently a major issue at sea and in coastal areas, the conference also addressed topics related to soil and land spills, such as those due to leaks during transportation over land or storage tanks and pipelines. The conference provided an international forum for the discussion of the latest research in this field, as well as the ways in which the most adequate response and emergency measures can be implemented. The topic of remediation and long term biological effects was also discussed during the meeting.

Galicia (Spain) Oil Spill, from November 2002 to April 2003
Map of Area GALICIA, Spain 20 Nov (From Disaster-relief) - A crippled tanker carrying more than 20 million gallons (around 67,000 tons) of oil split in half off the northwest coast of Spain on Tuesday (Nov. 19), threatening one of the worst environmental disasters in history. The rear section of the Prestige sunk early in the day, taking many of the oil tanks with it. Should the tanks leak, the resulting spill would be more than twice the size of that caused by the 1989 Exxon Valdez accident, warned the World Wildlife Federation. Trouble began last Wednesday, when the Bahamian-flagged vessel encountered a violent storm about 150 miles off Spain's Atlantic coast, causing an oil tank to puncture. The leak already had spilled at least 2 million gallons of oil. The tanker also had a 30- to 50-foot crack in the hull below the waterline which made it unable to proceed under its own power while salvagers sought a port to do repairs or transfer the oil to another vessel.... Pakistan oil spill update
Posted August 16, 2003 to Pakistan category. The Tasman Spirit has finally broken up . Predictably, the govt. said once again that the oil spill is not going to threaten the coastal areas. According to the BBC, 12,000 tons have already been spilled. By any standards, that is a huge diasaster, yet somehow the federal govt. keeps putting out statements like: worst is over and there will be no more oil spill from the stranded oil tanker Tasman Spirit. Maritime experts say 12,000 metric tons of oil have spilled into the Arabian Sea while another 35,000 are still on board the Greek-registered Tasman Spirit. The Tasman Spirit still has 35,000 tonnes of crude on board
    BBC
News The authorities are dancing all over the place now that the ship has sunk, but alas, the spill seems to be . To put things into perspective, in the most famous oil spill of them all, the Exxon Valdez diasaster, 38,800 metric tonnes of oil was spilled . In Karachi, 12,000 tonnes have already been spilled and with 35,000 still on the ship this has the potential to be a major disaster. In the Exxon Valdez spill, 38,000 tonnes coverd approximately 1,300 miles of shoreline. 12,000 tonnes by that math works out to be 412 miles of shoreline! Read more at the
