Arkansas State Parks Crater Of Diamonds State Park History The first diamond was found here in 1906 by John Huddleston, who owned the property. The Crater of Diamonds has changed hands several times over the years and several unsuccessful attempts have been made at commercial mining. All such ventures are shrouded in mystery; lawsuits, lack of money, and fires are only a few of the reasons for failure. The mine was operated by private interests as a tourist attraction from 1952 to 1972 when it was purchased by the State for development as a state park. SPONSORED LINKS Diamond-Hunting Tips 1. Look for a small, well-rounded crystal. A diamond weighing several carats may be no larger than a marble. 2. Diamonds have an oily, slick outer surface that dirt or mud will not stick to, so look for clean crystals.

In June 2002, we convened the ‘ Tunnel Vision: Women, Mining and Communities ’ forum in Melbourne, Australia and later produced an anthology of the same name. Oxfam Community Aid Abroad is not opposed to mining, but believes that this activity should only be undertaken in accordance with the rights reaffirmed by the international human rights system, particularly the right of men and women from communities to prior free and informed consent to both exploration and mining activities.

Mining and Geological Engineers, Including Mining Safety Engineers
Nature of the Work Employment Job Outlook Earnings ... Sources of Additional Information
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Mining and geological engineers find, extract, and prepare coal, metals, and minerals for use by manufacturing industries and utilities. They design open pit and underground mines, often using computers; supervise the construction of mine shafts and tunnels in underground operations; and devise methods for transporting minerals to processing plants. Mining engineers are responsible for the safe, economical, and environmentally sound operation of mines. Some mining engineers work with geologists and metallurgical engineers to locate and appraise new ore deposits. Others develop new mining equipment or direct mineral processing operations to separate minerals from the dirt, rock, and other materials with which they are mixed. Mining engineers frequently specialize in the mining of one mineral or metal, such as coal or gold. With increased emphasis on protecting the environment, many mining engineers work to solve problems related to land reclamation and water and air pollution. Mining safety engineers use their knowledge of mine design and practices to ensure the safety of workers and to comply with State and Federal safety regulations. They inspect walls and roof surfaces, test air samples, and examine mining equipment for compliance with safety practices.

Global Mining Initiative The issues covered The participants The MMSD Project ... Resourcing the Future Introduction
The Global Mining Initiative (GMI) brought together many of the world's largest mining, metals and minerals companies. This leadership exercise aimed to ensure that an industry that is essential to the well-being of a changing world is responsive to global needs and challenges.
The Initiative had three main strands: creation of an industry association that could focus on sustainable development in the mining, metals and minerals industry; an independent analysis of the key issues facing these industries; and a global conference on mining, metals and sustainable development in May 2002. The conference was a significant contribution to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in the fall of 2002, which marked the 10th anniversary of the Rio Earth Summit. The objective of all three strands was to reach a clearer understanding of the positive role the mining and minerals industry can play in making the transition to sustainable patterns of economic development.
In May 2002 - following publication of the final report of the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development project, the establishment of the International Council on Mining and Metals and the close of the global conference - the Global Mining Initiative ceased to exist as a separate entity.

Mining Customer Data
Gary Saarenvirta
A step-by-step look at a powerful clustering and segmentation methodology.
Customer clustering and segmentation are two of the most important data mining methodologies used in marketing and customer-relationship management. They use customer-purchase transaction data to track buying behavior and create strategic business initiatives. Businesses can use this data to divide customers into segments based on such "shareholder value" variables as current customer profitability, some measure of risk, a measure of the lifetime value of a customer, and retention probability. Creating customer segments based on such variables highlights obvious marketing opportunities. For example, high-profit, high-value, and low-risk customers are the ones a company wants to keep. This segment typically represents the 10 to 20 percent of customers who create 50 to 80 percent of a company's profits. A company would not want to lose these customers, and the strategic initiative for the segment is obviously retention. A low-profit, high-value, and low-risk customer segment is also an attractive one, and the obvious goal here would be to increase profitability for this segment. Cross-selling (selling new products) and up-selling (selling more of what customers currently buy) to this segment are the marketing initiatives of choice. Within behavioral segments, a business may create demographic subsegments. Customer demographic data does not typically correlate to customer shareholder value, which is why you don't use it together with behavioral data to create segments. However, demographic segmenting can steer marketers in selecting appropriate advertising, marketing channels, and campaigns to satisfy the strategic behavioral segment initiatives.
