Research in crystallography concentrates on the analysis of crystal structures by means of single crystal and powder diffraction experiments with X-rays from laboratory and synchrotron sources and neutrons. Research projects are devoted to clay minerals, to the determination of defect structures through the analysis of diffuse scattering and to archaeometry. Petrological and geochemical investigations are carried out predominantly on metamorphic rocks and mineral deposits in various regions of Europe and Africa. Some important research projects are based in Namibia, carried out within the framework of the post-graduate college "Interdisciplinary Geoscience Research in Africa". We enjoy active and fruitful cooperations with many research laboratories in Germany and all over the world. 8. The Mineralogy Of Nova Scotia
Minerals and mineral collecting in Nova Scotia, Canada
http://is2.dal.ca/~dommelen/mainrock.html
Welcome to the Mineralogy of Nova Scotia , Canada, a page devoted to all of those who love minerals and mineral collecting. For those from afar, Nova Scotia is situated in northeastern North America nearly surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Nova Scotia is a mineral collector's paradise. A wide range of top quality minerals can be found at many sites both inland and along the seashore. Mild weather, beautiful scenery, and friendly people help make any collecting trip a truly wonderful experience. The Bay of Fundy region offers world class zeolites and the world's highest tides are continually exposing new material. The purpose of this website is to present the mineralogical side of Nova Scotia. It is meant to be a reference and an online guide to the wonderful minerals of this part of the world. I hope you find it interesting and useful. If you have any comments, feel free to write me. Ronnie Van Dommelen

Our Purpose Division S-9 of the SSSA focuses on the solid inorganic phases controlling the physico-chemical processes in soils and sediments. To help solve problems related to agriculture, the environment, and the engineering usage of soils and sediments, we 1) identify and quantify the amounts of individual soil mineral phases that occur and measure their distribution; 2) characterize the bulk and surface structures of natural and synthetic soil minerals as well as the physical and chemical properties associated with these structures; 3) determine the types, mechanisms and rates of mineral transformations in soils and sediments; and 4) assess the nature and impact of the interactions of mineral phases with other soil components. This focus leads to better management and utilization of the soil resource for agricultural, environemental, and engineering applications.

Postdoctoral research faculty Virginia Polytechnic Institute 1996-1997 Faculty member at Miami University since 1998 Research Interests:
My research interests involve the integration of low temperature geochemistry and mineralogy in the study of crystal surfaces and water-rock interactions found in natural systems. In particular, I am interested in environmentally significant processes such as crystal growth, metal sorption, trace element partitioning and other surface mediated reactions. My research also addresses the structural response of minerals to substituent elements, especially lanthanides and actinides in apatite group minerals. Current research projects include: The role of crystal surface structure on trace element incorporation during growth; geochemical implications and dating of compositional zoning in minerals; crystal chemistry of the lanthanides and actinides in apatite; crystal growth and trace element incorporation in fluorite and apatite; understanding fundamental interactions between aqueous metal species and soil minerals; structural transformations in clay minerals.
