Scanning Acoustic Microscope
A scanning acoustic microscope works on the principle of propagation and reflection of acoustic waves at interfaces where a change of acoustic impedance (AI = density x velocity) occurs. It is similar to going to a doctor's office for an ultrasound test (e.g., when you are pregnant). We use the same principle to investigate rocks, concrete, and other man-made materials. The sound wave is propagated through water into the sample. At positions where an impedance (= velocity x density) change occurs, the sound waves are reflected back. We map distribution of these reflected waves we receive at the sample surface. The map of reflected waves gives us an idea of how impedance changes within our sample. Theoretical Nanostructure Research and Computational Science and Engineering

Molecular and Electronic Nanostructures The general goal of the molecular and electronic nanostructures theme is to develop new approaches leading to electronic devices. Within this area, programs range from computational electronics; scanning tunneling microscopy, including lithography and fabrication; to semiconductor nanostructures and photonics; to efforts to synthesize and characterize new materials, including self-organized syntheses of inorganic, organic, and biochemical systems. Here is the link to additional information about the molecular and electronic nanostructures area Goals and Resources Research in molecular and electronic nanostructures has been fostered in the Beckman Institute as an important element in the chain of interdisciplinary themes ranging from "physics to function" and from "molecules to mind." The group includes around twenty-five faculty members from several disciplines including chemistry, biophysics, physics, electrical engineering, and computer science. One goal of this main research theme is to develop a fundamental understanding of chemical and physical processes in molecular nanostructures, mesoscopic semiconductor-based systems, and macromolecular assemblies, with emphasis on future electronic or optoelectronic applications such as tera-byte memory function and in general on Feynman's dream of the "bottomless" opportunities of developing smaller and smaller structures.

The Electro-Optics Research Center
Abstract
The focus of our research is to design organic material systems and fabrication techniques for linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) devices. The materials used are pyrylium salt derivatives, these structures are ionic which allow the fabrication of polymeric thin films using the I onic S elf A ssembled M onolayer ( ISAM ) technique. Theory and experiments are used for modeling and quantifying the linear and second harmonic (SH) NLO tensor properties of the materials and of the thin-film structures made using them. This program has evolved due to ongoing collaboration between Electrical Engineering Physics , and Chemistry faculty and students over the past three years.
