Hemoflagellates
Rodrigo A. Zeledón
General Concepts
American Trypanosomiasis (Chagas Disease)
Clinical Manifestations
Symptoms of acute disease may include fever, local or general edema, lymphadenopathy, tachycardia, heart enlargement, and myocarditis. Heart alterations and, occasionally, megaesophagus or megacolon may appear as late sequelae.
Structure
Typical, small trypomastigotes are found in peripheral blood and intracellular amastigotes in tissues.
Classification and Antigenic Types
Strains of Trypanosoma cruzi are differentiated by isoenzyme patterns and DNA sequencing. No antigenic variation is observed.
Multiplication and Life Cycle
Intracellular amastigotes divide to form pseudocysts, which release nondividing trypomastigotes into the blood. Trypomastigotes ingested by a vector bug transform in the insect intestine into epimastigotes, which reproduce to form infective metacyclic trypomastigotes, which are expelled in feces and enter a new host through skin abrasions.
Pathogenesis
Inflammatory reactions around pseudocysts lead to myocarditis and destruction of parasympathetic ganglia (mainly of the heart and myenteric plexus). An autoimmune reaction may develop.

Alphabetical Breakdown of Glossary Terms
A
B C D ... T thru Z
A absorption- Movement of ions and water into as organism as a result of metabolic processes, frequently against an electrochemical potential gradient (active) or as a result of diffusion along an activity gradient (passive). acetogenic bacterium - Prokaryotic organism that uses carbonate as a terminal electron acceptor and produces acetic acid as a waste product. acetylene-block assay- Estimates denitrification by determining release of nitrous oxide (N O) from acetylene-treated soil. acetylene-reduction assay- Estimates nitrogenase activity by measuring the rate of acetylene reduced to ethylene. N -Acetylglucosamine and N -Acetylmuramic acid - Sugar derivatives in the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls. acidophile- Organism that grows best under acid conditions (down to a pH of 1). acid soil- actinomycete- Nontaxonomic term applied to a group of high G + C base composition, Gram-positive bacteria that have a superficial resemblance to fungi. Includes many but not all organisms belonging to the order Actinomycetales.

What is Microbiology?
Fall
Microbiology is the study of microorganisms - little, really little, critters (except for The Big One - see Bugs in the News Bacteria are absolutely necessary for all life on this planet - for every known ecosystem - including the human ecosystem! Without bacteria, there would be no life, as we call life, on the earth. However, it is a good thing that most bacteria die-out. Here is why: bacteria are single-cell organisms, that produce more of their kind by cell-division, alone. So, if one begins with a single bacterial cell like E. coli for example, in 20 minutes there will be two, and 20 minutes later, four, etc., E. coli cells. At this rate, even though most bacteria are several hundred-times smaller than we can see with our naked eye (never seen a clothed eye), in only 43 hours, from that one cell at the beginning, there would be enough E. coli to occupy the entire volume of the earth (1,090,000,000,000,000,000,000 cubic meters)! In only about two additional hours, these bacteria would weigh as much as the earth - 6,600,000,000,000,000,000,000 tons! Bummer! Luckily for us, most bacterial cells die because of the enormous competition for food, and because of other tiny organisms which produce substances (antibiotics) that kill them - you know, like penicillin, which is made by a particular fungus, the mold -
