    Who is a Microbiologist?
Microbiologist investigate the fascinating world of organisms too small to be seen with the naked eye. Although known by many different titles, a microbiologist is a scientist who studies living organisms and infectious agents many of which can only be seen with a microscope. They also study the interaction of microorganisms with people. Everyday microbiologists around the world explore, investigate and discover how these organisms, called microbes exist and affect our lives.

Microbes have long been associated with drugs. The introduction of antibacterial agents, chemical disinfectants and antiseptics had already made significant improvements in public health, long before the famous discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming in the 1920s. Later developments brought antiviral and antifungal drugs, and studies of the immune system highlighted the promise offered by host defence peptides. Now genomics is helping in the quest for new drugs. This issue of Microbiology Today takes a close look at the close relationship that microbes have with a wide range of drugs - from antimicrobials to narcotics. Last updated 24 May 2004

CWD is unlikely to be transmitted to humans Posted by paustian on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 - 10:34 AM; Science News A recent study by the CDC shows that chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer and elk is unlikely to be transmitted to humans. CWD is a prion disease, similar to mad cow disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans. This conclusion was based upon epidemiological studies that showed a normal instance of CJD in areas that are endemic for CWD. Researchers also performed in vitro experiments examining the ability of the CWD prion protein to convert the normal healthy human prion protein to its diseased form. The rate of conversion was 14-fold lower than that for conversion of healthy deer prions to the diseased form. An conversion rate this low is not going to be able to cause disease in humans. This strongly suggests that transmission of CWD to humans is very unlikely. comments?
