Careers in Atmospheric Research and Applied meteorology. CONTENTS. (These pages are best viewed using Netscape Navigator tm ). WHY meteorology?
http://www.ametsoc.org/AMS/pubs/careers.html
The original booklet was produced under the direction of a committee chaired by Warren M. Washington that included Werner A. Baum, Todd Glickman, Ronald D. McPherson, and Pamela Stephens, with input from a large number of AMS members. Henry Lansford, a science writer and communication consultant based in Boulder, Colorado, wrote the booklet and supervised its design and production. It was designed and produced by Michael Shibao of the Graphic Services group at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which is operated by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation. It was reproduced in electronic format for the World Wide Web by staff of the American Meteorological Society.
Careers in Atmospheric Research and Applied Meteorology CONTENTS [tm]

WHY METEOROLOGY? Thousands of career choices are available in our fast-changing society. Why would you choose atmospheric science or applied meteorology? You will find very specific answers in the following pages, but here is a quick look at some of the challenges of our changing atmosphere: Do you have a deep curiosity about the world around you? As a meteorologist, you can satisfy that curiosity by investigating the natural forces that shape our weather and climate. You can look for answers to important questions that our society is asking-how can we save lives, how can we protect our environment? You can use your knowledge to warn others when danger is approaching in the form of tornadoes and

44. Light And Optics: Online Meteorology Guide
Introduces optical effects resulting from light interaction with air, dust and haze particles, ice crystals and water droplets.

Graphic by: Yiqi Shao Rainbows, sunsets and halos; a spectacular display of colors and visuals in the sky called "atmospheric optics". As sunlight (or moonlight) enters the atmosphere, it is either absorbed, reflected, scattered, refracted or diffracted by atmospheric particles or air molecules. These processes, individually or in combination, are responsible for producing most optical effects. This module investigates these particle-light interactions and the assortment of optical effects they produce. The Light and Optics module has been organized into the following sections: Sections
Last Update: 08/26/99 Mechanisms
Particle/Molecule-light interactions responsible for creating optical effects. These interactions include: reflection, scattering, refraction and diffraction. Air, Dust, Haze
Optical effects resulting from the interaction of light with air, dust and haze particles. These effects include: crepuscular rays, blue skies, blue haze and sunsets. Ice Crystals
Optical effects resulting from the interaction of light with ice crystals. These effects include: sundogs, sun pillars and halos. Water Droplets
Optical effects resulting from the interaction of light with water droplets. These effects include: cloud iridescence, rainbows and a silver lining along the edge of clouds.

45. Meteorology
Fremont's 1848 description of the forces that govern the weather of California.
http://www.longcamp.com/meteorology.html

Leading the expedition was fifty-two year old Legend of Honor member Joseph Nicolas Nicollet, an eminent French astronomer and mathematician, and foremost surveyor and mapmaker of his day. Nicollet, had been the protoge of Laplace, and is recognized in the last vol. of Mecanique Celeste as an observer of comets, and for his work on the great map of France. At the time of the revolution of 1830, Nicollet was astronomer at the Bureau of Longitudes at the Royal Observatory in Paris. Financially ruined by the revolution, he came to America, where he became associated with Rudolf Hassler of the U. S. Coast Survey. In 1839, J. R. Poinsett, then Secretary of the Department of War, requested of Nicollet that he write an essay on Meteorological Observations. The essay was published by the Corps of Topographical Engineers. It is primarily a collection of questions and suggestions of topics to be studied. On pp 6-7 of the 1848 Geographical Memoir is an entirely current description on the meteorological dynamics of the western states.

Role and Objectives of BMRC
Research in the Bureau The Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre (BMRC) is the research division of the National Meteorological Service in Australia. The research in BMRC is carried out by six groups covering the areas of model development, data assimilation, model evaluation, weather forecasting, climate forecasting, and ocean and marine forecasting. The work of each group contributes to the advancement of meteorological and oceanographic science and to the enhancement of the operations and services of the Bureau. The Bureau of Meteorology has a responsibility, arising in part from Australia's international obligations, to provide forecasts, warnings and meteorological information over an area covering about 12% of the globe and extending from the tropics to Antarctica. This task is made more difficult by the unique meteorological problems arising from Australia's relatively isolated location in the southern hemisphere. The Bureau must devote a large fraction of its resources to the maintenance of basic systems (observation networks, communications systems) for its large area of responsibility which puts it at a significant disadvantage compared with smaller or more populous countries. A major purpose of research in BMRC is to minimise the effects of these practical and budgetary constraints on the standard of meteorological service provided for Australia.

FloodCast: Better, Longer Range Flood Forecast Maps
FloodCast brings accurate and timely flood forecast maps to your PC via the internet in just seconds. For as little as $5 a month (based on statewide purchase), you can receive the latest forecasted flood danger by county for your state, your region, or the entire country. FloodCast provides a more detailed and longer range flood forecast than the National Weather Service (NWS) allowing for more time and better information on which to base decisions. Derived from the NWS Flash Flood Guidance data and EarthSat's proprietary quantitative precipitation forecasts, FloodCast color codes each county according to one of 5 flood danger levels: Very High, High, Moderate, Low, and None. The maps are updated as often as four times daily, depending on weather and flood conditions, and are easily accessed from the FloodCast home page on the internet. No special hardware or software required. FloodCast consists of two separate products:
