Failures of Pipelines
Gas and oil pipelines have established an impressive safety record over the years. However, failures have occurred for an assortment of reasons. Some of the causes of failure are identified in this commentary. Since the 1940s, all of the oil and gas transmission lines have been built by welding. In general, American Petroleum Institute (API) 5L specification steels are used in pipelines. Pipeline wall thicknesses are established on the pressure in the line and on the allowable hoop stress levels for the material. The allowable stress levels for gas pipelines vary based on the location of the pipeline and are regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Pipelines are pressure tested in addition to nondestructive testing prior to being put into service. Normally, pipelines are hydrostatically stressed to levels above their working pressure and near their specified minimum yield strength. This pressure is held for several hours to ensure that the pipeline does not have defects that may cause failure in use. This proof test of pipelines provides an additional level of confidence that is not found in many other structures.

The Ancient Metallurgy Research Group was established in 1992 within the Department of Archaeological Sciences. The AMRG encourages investigations into all areas of ancient and historical metallurgy, including mining, primary metal production, artefact manufacturing, slag and residue studies, cultural aspects of metallurgy and metals, geophysical survey of production sites, and archaeomagnetic dating of high-temperature features. Aims Teaching The AMRG comprises several academic staff of the Department, PhD/MPhil researchers, undergraduate students undertaking Final Year Dissertations in this subject area, and visiting and honorary researchers. Staff and students of the AMRG are actively involved in fieldwork and laboratory based projects. The AMRG welcomes enquiries on all aspects of archaeometallurgy.

Solvay products are employed at several stages in the processing of many metals, from extraction to post use recycling.
The metallurgical industry is a major energy consumer. Solvay products, which make it possible to regulate the operation of blast furnaces or lower a metal's melting point, contribute to the energy-saving efforts made by this industrial sector.
Other Solvay products make it possible to reduce the amount of nitric acid and nitrogen oxides released into the atmosphere by the metallurgical industry, thus limiting those discharges which can contribute to the formation of acid rain.
