Introduction
DAMTP was founded in 1959 by George Batchelor . He was succeeded by Keith Moffatt in 1983, and then by David Crighton in 1991 (a few CDs of the David Crighton Memorial Concert are still available ). The current Head of the Department, since 2000, is Professor Timothy J. Pedley DAMTP is one of the two constituent Departments of the Faculty of Mathematics , the other being the (DPMMS), within which is located the Statistical Laboratory . The two departments are now based in a new facility, the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS) , on the same site as the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences . The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics provides university education in Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science as well as teacher training in subjects related to these branches of study. As a rule, in each of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science branches the first and the second year are common and from the third year students can choose different specializations. The main specializations offered in Mathematics are: Mathematical Analysis, Numerical Analysis and Optimalization, Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Mathematical Structures, Computer Graphics and Geometry. The students of Mathematics can choose in addition to their main specialization some "small" one, for example Econometry and Control, Insurance Mathematics or Computer Science for Mathematicians. Students of Mathematics can decide also for 2 special branches differring since the first year of study: Economical and Financial Mathematics and Mathematics and Management (the last branch is provided together with the Faculty of Management Physics offers the following specializations: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Biophysics and Molecular Physics, Electronics, Plasma Physics, Solid State Physics, Geophysics, Nuclear and Subnuclear Physics, Meteorology and Climatology, Optics and Optoelectronics, Theoretical and Mathematical Physics, Applied Physics.

    Egyptian Unit Fractions
The representation of rational numbers as sums of unit fractions dates back to the time of the ancient Egyptians. Today this subject survives mainly as a source of mathematical puzzles and problems in abstract number theory, but the subject also has great historical and anthropological interest, since it sheds light on the thought processes of people who lived at the very beginning of recorded human history. The articles listed below are primarily concerning speculation as to the possible methods that may have been used by the ancient Egyptians to construct their tables. Articles concerning the purely number-theoretic aspects of unit fractions are contained in the Number Theory section of this site. The Rhind Papyrus 2/n Table The Akhmin Papyrus Why Unit Fractions? I was tempted to walk out, but I had this review to write, so fortunately I stayed. The second half was wonderful and made complete sense of Act I. All those Hollywood spy cliches turn out to be a brilliant device to let us see what happens from from John Nash 's perspective. There is one good math scene where Nash and some fellow grad students are in a bar and a bevy of young women walk in, lead by a very attractive blonde. Nash realizes that all the guys hitting on the blonde would not be an optimal strategy and that this dating situation is a counter example to the claims of classical economic theory. The insight leads to his Nobel-prize winning result. If true, this would be the best eureka yarn since Newton and the apple. Otherwise the math was a little weak. Lots of scrawled equations do not a math movie make. More of an explanation of

    Welcome
Thank you for your interest in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Vermont. Our students and our faculty understand the unique challenges and satisfactions that the careful study of mathematics and statistics offers. Mathematical ideas and results not only represent some of the highest accomplishments of mankind, but also are an indispensable tool in an ever-increasing array of disciplines. In this sense mathematics has a dual nature: it is both an independent field of study valued for precision of thought and intrinsic beauty, and it is a rich source of techniques and methods for the world of applications. Here at UVM we take great pride in making sure that both of these aspects of mathematics and statistics are well represented in our research and our curriculum. Our research strengths in applied and computational mathematics, analysis, algebra and number theory, and combinatorics and graph theory, and applied statistics and biostatistics are recognized throughout the world. Our faculty members have given lectures on 5 continents and in over 40 foreign countries. Recent research contributions include fast algorithms for modeling blood flow through the body and for modeling the size and shape of the polar ice caps, work on fundamental properties signal processing and fiber optic communications, the study of the spread of viruses in a computer network, and the design and analysis of methods to improve care of premature infants.

We have now won four times in three years (a double win last year). This time it was a team of rookies, Sasha Aravkin, Tracy Lovejoy, and Casey Scheider-Mizell, who wrote a winning paper. In addition a team from Oxford University, coached by our own two-time winner Jeff Giansiracusa, shared top honors with us.
