Description
The Journal of Nuclear Materials publishes high quality papers in materials research relevant to nuclear fission and fusion reactors and high power accelerator technologies, and in closely related aspects of materials science and engineering. Both original research and critical review papers covering experimental, theoretical, and computational aspects of either fundamental or applied nature are welcome. The breadth of the field is such that a wide range of processes and properties is of interest to the readership, spanning atomic lattice defects, microstructures, thermodynamics, corrosion and mechanical and physical properties, for example. The following list, which is not exhaustive, describes topics appropriate to the Journal.

143. Teachers Beware: Corporate Science Invades Our Schools - Volume 17 No. 1 - Fall
Corporatesponsored materials are being used more frequently in schools, often because it is free of charge. The author is concerned about the bias in such materials.

by John F. Borowski For several years, I have watched a torrent of corporate-sponsored materials enter our schools: coloring books by the coal industry, biotech giants proclaiming that genetically engineered foods are needed to feed a growing population, and logging interests that justify the vast clearcuts that scar our public lands. As a science teacher, I struggle with inadequate budgets and overcrowded classes - as do my colleagues around the country. Free curriculum can be a blessing, an opportunity to bring new and exciting materials into science courses. But I worry that new teachers, strained for resources and unfamiliar with the bias inherent in these materials, may be aiding and abetting this propaganda campaign. Here's an example: Ford Motor Company recently donated $1.5 million dollars to "Provider Pals." This puppet show is designed to put a face on miners, loggers, and ranchers: a very happy face indeed. It's organized by Bruce Vincent, an outspoken defender of logging, mining and grazing on public lands. Vincent and his band of "providers" apparently show the city kiddies how wood, meat, and other resources are brought to the market.

Course 39
Games Research:
the Science of Interactive Entertainment
Welcome to the home of the SIGGRAPH 2000 Course on Games Research. Included below are some materials for the course that have been updated since the deadline for conference publications (April 7, 2000) as well as links to some related topics which were mentioned in the panel discussions at the course (on July 25, 2000). Having this page at a (we hope!) stable URL should make it possible to provide updated contact information as the Course speakers inevitably change affiliations. Please feel free to suggest any additions or changes.
Abstract:
As the computational power of game platforms rapidly increase, the sophistication of software for interactive entertainment expands in response. Once there was a huge gulf between high end graphics and game content. Now they seem headed for convergence. This course attempts to build a bridge between the SIGGRAPH research community and the game development research community. It will present both the application of recent research to specific games and platforms, as well as novel research specifically targeted at future games. It will showcase cutting-edge game technology, and demonstrate that interactive entertainment is an exciting and important application for future research by the SIGGRAPH community.

FANTASTIC
COLLECTIBLES
updated February 14, 2004 Collecting Science Fiction books and magazines has been my hobby for over 30 years. My main interest is in magazines known as 'Pulp' magazines, published between 1920 through about 1955, but I collect Science Fiction paperbacks and hardcover books as well. As I unfortunately read only English, my interest is confined to those published in the U.S., Canada, and Britain. If you have any of these to sell or trade, I am always in the market to purchase collections, large and small. I can best be contacted by snailmail at: Fantastic Collectibles
Box 167
Carmel, Indiana 46082 USA
I always have plenty of duplicates
to sell or trade, as I usually buy entire collections and choose what I need for my personal collection. Below you can view the duplicates I have- all at very reasonable prices. Lack of sponsorship means that I haven't been able to produce a new edition of BURKS this year as I'd hoped. Also, sales seem to be tailing off I'm not sure whether this is because I haven't produced a new edition since 2001, or because everyone has broadband Internet access these days. I'm still hoping to produce one more edition if I can raise some money to do it, but don't hold your breath. Also, if and when I do, it will definitely be the last edition ever. See the ordering information page for more details on pricing.

Our most recently completed research project focused on learning more about the knowledge and skills base that undergraduate students have as they enter respiratory physiology and how this knowledge and skills base matches the expectations of faculty. Our current research extends this work to other areas of physiology and examines ways in which faculty can best help students correct their misconceptions and develop problem solving skills. Previous projects dealing with active learning and appropriate use of technology in the classroom have been reported in various publications and monographs.
To help students learn various aspects of physiology, our members have developed software, problem books, and textbooks. To help faculty, we conduct workshops focused on promoting an active learning environment. These workshops have been held at national and international meetings as well as at contracting institutions. The PERC website is best viewed in a browser capable of displaying frames.
