A Dynamic Field: Materials Science and Engineering
Materials science and engineering is arguably the most important engineering discipline today.
Materials have always been important to the advance of civilization: entire eras are named for them. After evolving from the Stone Age through the Bronze and Iron Ages, now in the modern era we have vast numbers of tailored materials to make use of. We are really living in the Materials Age.
Work and study in the field of materials science and engineering is grounded in an understanding of why materials behave the way they do, and encompasses how materials are made and how new ones can be developed. For example, the way materials are processed is often important. People in the Iron Age discovered this when they learned that soft iron could be heated and then quickly cooled to make a material hard enough to plow the earth; and the same strategy is used today to make high-strength aluminum alloys for jet aircraft. Today we demand more from our materials than mechanical strength, of courseelectrical, optical, and magnetic properties, for example, are crucial for many applications. As a result, modern materials science focuses on ceramics, polymers, and semiconductors, as well as on materials, such as metals and glasses, that have a long history of use.

The mandate of the Institute of Materials Science (IMS), established in 1965 by the Connecticut General Assembly, is to maintain an outstanding research center, provide superior graduate research education in the interdisciplinary fields of materials science and engineering at the University of Connecticut, and provide materials-related technical outreach to Connecticut's industries. The Institute has extensive state-of-the-art facilities including laboratories in surface science, laser materials interactions, x-ray diffraction, electron optics including TEM, SEM, ESEM, biomaterials, solid freeform fabrication, nanomaterials optoelectronics, polymer rheology, polymer synthesis and processing, casting, mechanical testing, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermal analysis, GPC, infrared spectrometers and image analysis. In 2001, IMS was expanded with a 15,000 sq. ft. addition.

Oh, the comfort, The inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with another person. Having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out just as they are, Chaff and grain together- Certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away. back to top What is MSE?
MSE is a field of Engineering - MSE stands for Materials Science and Engineering. The field encompasses the spectrum of materials: metals, ceramics, polymers (plastics), semiconductors, and combinations of materials called composites. Most fields of work or study have a bit of MSE in them! But let's start at the beginning...
What are Materials?
First, what are materials? That's easy. Look around. What do you see? Materials are everywhere! The clothes we wear are made from a variety of materials. Our home is made of materials - mostly manufactured. The glass in the windows, the vinyl siding, the ceramic dinnerware, the metal silverware, and everywhere we look we see products made from materials. Most products are made from many different kinds of materials to satisfy the needs of the product. One way to look at materials is to consider the various generic descriptions such as:
  • Metals: Materials that are normally combinations of "metallic elements". These elements, when combined, usually have electrons that are non localized and as a consequence have generic types of properties. Metals usually are good conductors of heat and electricity. Also, they are quite strong but malleable and tend to have a lustrous look when polished.
