Introduction and Overview
The course instructor Professor Keith Ronald is pleased to have you consider our unique offering in the study of a fascinating but curiously unknown aquatic form of life. He looks forward to getting to know your thoughts and ideas through your response to this announcement and perhaps later through your participation in this educational experience. Marine Mammal Management is an interdisciplinary course, open to everyone who has an interest in the Marine Mammals and their Management This course may be taken for credit or out of general interest, anywhere in the world. Several thousand students have taken previous environmental courses, over a period of two decades both on campus and throughout many countries of the world. These participants were drawn from 46 disciplines and sub disciplines as well as from the general public This means that the other students taking the course at the same time as you are likely to represent a wide variety in age, life experience and knowledge of Marine Mammals.

Education is the #1 priority of DARLING CETACEANS. We offer outreach programs for students in Kindergarten though High School. Through these programs students learn about marine mammals, marine careers, and other topics. Each program is about an hour and contains interactive materials and biofacts. Students will see and touch things they have not seen before! We travel anywhere in Texas and would love to visit your school!
If you are a student doing a report on a whale, a teacher trying to find a great activity for your class, or a dad looking for a reputable aquarium to visit; we can help! DARLING CETACEANS wants to be your direct source for any marine mammal question! To begin that process, we are compiling a list of great web sites that have what you are seeking. This way, you do not have to waste your time searching through pages. If you have a question you just cannot find the answer to, just ask us! We know lots of stuff, and what we do not know we will find out!
Want to decorate your child's room with dolphins? Or maybe you are looking for a gift for your future marine biologist. DARLING CETACEANS has many items you can buy including pillows, statues, key holders, bumper stickers, shirts and more! Some are hand made by our own staff. We do not post all our items. PREFACE

Marine environment stability appears more and more as a critical condition for the survival of the planet.
Scientific interest for the role of oceans and seas as reservoirs of life, climate regulators, and, more recently, dumping grounds of human activities, has increased with a new awareness of global planetary changes and a much feared, ill defined idea that human pollutions are key elements in these changes.
Questions that arise, among others, on these key species relate to their distribution, their number, their biology, their lesions, their contaminations, and their response to pollutants. Such studies dictate the approach : a simultaneous, integrated evaluation of individuals, groups, and environment.
A second approach is, 3 years later, to publish updated proceedings of that meeting, each text having been re-submitted to its author to emphasize new developments. The book is divided in 4 sections. A first section (chapters 1 to 3) deals with geohydrodynamics and with the location of marine mammals and seabirds in marine food webs. Oceanographic processes responsible for marine systems dynamics are described, with an emphasis on marine production (Nihoul). Factors that influence marine production in marine food webs, in relation with marine mammals and seabirds are presented (Bouquegneau et al.) and a list of those species, with short indications on ecology, is given (Joiris).

These countries act by banning commercial international trade in an agreed list of endangered species and by regulating and monitoring trade in others that might become endangered. The International Whaling Commission- (IWC) was set up under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling which was signed in Washington DC on 2 December 1946.The purpose of the Convention is to provide for the proper conservation of whale stocks and thus make possible the orderly development of the whaling industry. The main duty of the IWC is to keep under review and revise as necessary the measures laid down in the Schedule to the Convention which govern the conduct of whaling throughout the world The North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission- (NAMMCO is an international body for cooperation on the conservation, management and study of marine mammals in the North Atlantic. The NAMMCO Agreement, which was signed in Nuuk, Greenland on 9 April 1992 by Norway, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, focuses on modern approaches to the study of the marine ecosystem as a whole, and to understanding better the role of marine mammals in this system. NAMMCO provides a mechanism for cooperation on conservation and management for all species of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) and pinnipeds (seals and walruses) in the region, many of which have not before been covered by such an international agreement.

The basic requirement to be a trainer at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre is a Bachelor of Science degree - which will take a minimum of four years to obtain. However, the most important way to prepare for this career is to have practical animal experience. Previous experience in working with animals could be at a veterinary clinic, pet store, farm or in an aquarium or zoo. Successful candidates, in addition to having some previous history interacting with animals, will have good public speaking abilities and people skills. The ability to think clearly, quickly and with common sense are helpful traits. You should also be a certified diver and possess a valid driver's licence.

Marine Mammal Printouts Marine Mammals are mammals that spend most of their lives in the seas. They include the cetaceans (whales and dolphins), pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, and walrus), sirenians (manatees and dugongs), sea otters, and even the polar bear. Most marine mammals have a thick layer of insulating blubber that keeps them warm in cold water. Most are carnivores (meat-eaters), whose diet includes fish , crustaceans, birds , and krill. Marine mammals are hunted by other marine mammals (like killer whales and polar bears sharks , and man. A few marine mammals (like manatees) are herbivores (plant-eaters).

For decades, populations of marine mammals were depressed in the wake of significant human harvest. And there were large marine predators on marine mammals.
http://www.buchal.com/tgsh/chap7/c3fn-04.htm
Marine Mammal Populations Decimate Salmon
Marine mammal predation has also increased sharply in recent years. For decades, populations of marine mammals were depressed in the wake of significant human harvest. But populations of marine mammals have increased dramatically on the West Coast since passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972. By some accounts, the populations are increasing at 10% a year, and doubling every eight years.
Seals and sea lions are major predators which consume vast numbers of salmon. These animals prey primarily on returning adult salmon but also consume large numbers of juveniles and subadults. Seals and seal lions follow migrating adults well into freshwater environments. A population of 10,000 harbor seals (the near-Columbia River population estimate) would consume 1.8 million pounds of salmon in a year. This is over 60 percent of the 2.8 million pounds landed in the 1990 Oregon troll fishery.
With respect to sea lions, a 10 percent diet of salmon is a conservative estimate. At 25 pounds of fish per day for northern sea lions (2.5 pounds of salmon) and 15 pounds of fish per day for California sea lions (1.5 pounds of salmon), the seasonally migrating California sea lions and the resident northern sea lions could consume 851,000 pounds of salmon per year. This is about 30 percent of the 2.8 million pounds of salmon landed in 1990.
In 1994, forty percent of the adult salmon showing up at Bonneville Dam had marine mammal bites or scars on them. Only twenty percent had the marks at Lower Granite Dam.
