The list was established in August 1993 specifically for marine mammal researchers and graduate students, as well as those actively involved in marine mammal conservation and management. As of January 2002 there were over 4,100 subscribers from 72 different countries. Anyone may subscribe to the list. Editors of the MARMAM list work on a volunteer basis. At any one time there may be between three and five editors. We have endeavoured to make the editorial policy as uniform and explicit as possible (detailed below), but there may be some individual editor variation in the standard of messages sent to the list. MARINE MAMMAL RESEARCH AT HBOI
The Division of Marine Mammal Research and Conservation (DMMRC) at HBOI has multifaceted biomedical research, education and conservation programs involving various marine mammal species around the world. Present research programs are documenting the cause of marine mammal strandings, the effects of harmful algal bloom biotoxins and the identification of emerging diseases in these species. Special emphasis is placed on the study of the gross and histopathologic characterization of diseases of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins ( Tursiops truncatus ) that inhabit the Indian River Lagoon (IRL). There is a present concern about the health of IRL dolphins and the IRL ecosystem as a whole based on HBOI photo identification data that document an increased incidence of a varied assortment of skin lesions in dolphins that suggest infectious, toxic and human-related etiologies.
Additionally, DMMRC is launching an extensive clinical research program on developing a treatment for cutaneous viral papillomatosis in the Florida manatee. This transmissible skin disease is the first and only viral disease documented in manatees and was recently discovered by Dr. Gregory D. Bossart, DMMRC Director, and colleagues. "Sounding Out the Ocean's Secrets" from the Beyond Discovery series Description For the 119 species of marine mammals, as well as for some other aquatic animals, sound is the primary means of learning about the environment and of communicating, navigating, and foraging. The possibility that human-generated noise could harm marine mammals or significantly interfere with their normal activities is an issue of increasing concern. Noise and its potential impacts have been regulated since the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. Public awareness of the issue escalated in 1990s when researchers began using high-intensity sound to measure ocean climate changes. More recently, the stranding of beaked whales in proximity to Navy sonar use has again put the issue in the spotlight.

A volunteer network that records sightings and strandings of marine mammals in the Eastern Caribbean. Includes information on marine mammals of the Caribbean and educational resources.
    http://www.eccnwhale.org/
The Eastern Caribbean Cetacean Network (ECCN) is a regional, volunteer network that records sightings and strandings of marine mammals in the Eastern Caribbean.
      MISSION
Through research and education, ECCN's objective is to gain community support for the protection of resident and migratory whales and dolphins AND their marine habitat. SIGHTINGS
Over thirty species of marine mammals have been sighted in the Eastern Caribbean as well as the rare West Indian manatee (Trinidad). The Network provides pioneering information about marine mammals throughout the region. Many of the species are known to occur year-round while seasonal residents use these tropical waters as important breeding and calving grounds. STRANDINGS
Records of cetacean strandings (beachings) provide vital information about species distribution in the region, some of which have gone unobserved until recently. Strandings of pygmy and dwarf sperm whales, for example, have shown a more extensive range than previously known. WHALE WATCHING
The Eastern Caribbean Whale Watch Association, CARIB WHALE, provides valuable information to determine species occurance, seasonality and residency, and contributes important data regarding critical habitats for breeding and feeding.

Unofficial Site) Ewan Fordyce (University of Otago Professor of Geology) is the leader of a unique project “The Vanished World Heritage trail” In North Otago in the Waitaki Valley, the “Vanished World” Heritage Trail is now opened. This is based on the areas natural history, both geological and fossil. This offers an exclusive look at ancient marine mammals that were fossilized in limestone 25-35 million years ago. The Heritage Trail will offer 15 easily assessable sites in coastal and inland Waitaki. The Waitaki limestones have produced a world-class selection of fossil whales, shark toothed dolphins, and giant penguins. At one site a baleen whale has been partially uncovered. When it was buried there was probably over 100 meters of water above it. Other fossils in the area are coconuts, brachiopods (shells), sharks, bony fish, echinoderms etc. The fossils will be partially exposed so they can be easily seen. Echinoderms (top and bottom view) A visitors’ center will be operating in Duntroon. The center will showcase the fossil and geological tourism development under way in North Otago. A small brochure with map will be available free and the trail will be self-guided. For people who require more than a map, an A4 colour brochure will be available for purchase. This will summarize key features for each site, and will include a geological time scale showing important events. For tourists and educational groups who require further details, a guidebook will be available.

(CNN) From sea turtles to whales to dolphins and birds, hundreds of thousands of animals die each year because they become entangled in fishing gear. Now in an unusual partnership of scientists, the fishing industry and conservation groups, a contest with a hefty $25,000 prize is aimed at reducing those accidental deaths, known as "bycatch." The World Wildlife Fund is taking the lead in the International Smart Gear Competition, which was announced Monday on the opening day of the Fourth World Fisheries Congress in Vancouver. "Smart Gear" will begin accepting entries in June, with a deadline of December 31, 2004. Winners in three categories will also get technical help in bringing their ideas from the drawing board to manufacture.
