DEDICATION : The Marine Mammal Conservancy is dedicated to Molly, the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin in the lower right. She was captured from the wild over 35 year ago, and has served her life in captivity, sacrificing her freedom to provide amusement and education for the human population. Molly serves as an inspiration to us all, and a reminder that marine mammals deserve freedom and protection in their own domain.

Our Activities The Bottlenose dolphin Project ... Contact us! A short presentation... The Leviathan Academy was founded in 1996 to promote and develop studies and researches for the knowledge and conservation of Marine Mammals, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea. The Academy continues the studies tradition and the activities of Marine Mammals Working Group, informally founded in 1990 in the Animal Biology Department of University of Rome. Researchers, graduates and students take part in the Academy; they produce many researches that are presented in scientific publications and international conferences. Many students have developed their thesis in the field of Academy researches and were able to realise their interests on Marine Mammal life. At the same time, the Academy organises many seminaries and conferences open to the public, publishes on daily news and periodics and allows voluntaries to take part at the researches. THE ACTIVITIES OF THE LEVIATHAN ACADEMY Projects Bottlenosed dolphin project The Bottlenose dolphins are the most studied dolphin in the world but, in spite of this, our knowledge about this dolphins are still insufficient; this is mainly because of the plasticity of this specie that is able to adapt to different local situations.

Update July 1997 : The Bahamas Marine Mammal Survey has moved the base of operations to Hole In The Wall, the lighthouse complex on the extreme southern tip of Abaco. The lighthouse has been automated and is now unmanned. The Bahamian government has leased the keepers' quarters to the Survey. The emphasis of the survey is to catalog sightings of whales and dolphins in the Northeast and Northwest Providence Channels - the deep passage through the Bahama Banks that connects the open Atlantic with the Gulf Stream and Florida coastal waters. Vistors are welcome but be warned that the road(?) into Hole In The Wall from the paved Great Abaco Highway is difficult. A high clearance vehicle is strongly advised. From the turn-off to the lighthouse is 15 miles, allow at least an hour and a half each way. There is no phone service into the site but the team makes at least one trip a week to Marsh Harbour. Diane Claridge's sister, Brenda Mitchell, can usually be reached through Sapodillys Bar and Grill on the Marsh Harbour waterfront. Contact Brenda if you wish latest news from Hole In The Wall.

Protecting Whales from Dangerous Sonar
An NRDC-led legal effort forces the U.S. Navy to limit use of a "super sonar" system that can maim or kill marine mammals, but the battle over noise beneath the waves continues.

Click to watch video of sonar's effects
Around the globe, nations are currently testing and beginning to deploy "active sonar" technology, which uses extremely loud sound to detect submarines. But active sonar has been proven harmful to marine mammals and fish; it has been linked to a series of mass strandings and deaths of whales in recent years.
Researchers have found that many humpback whales cease singing when exposed to an LFA sonar signal that is hundreds of miles distant.
Photo: Bill Lawton / NMML The historic agreement between the Navy and the coalition comes after NRDC proved in court that the Navy's plan to deploy LFA sonar through 75 percent of the world's oceans was illegal. The Navy has now agreed that use of LFA sonar will be guided by negotiated geographical limits and seasonal exclusions, which conservationists believe will protect critical habitat and whale migrations. None of the limits apply during war or heightened threat conditions; the pact demonstrates that current law can safeguard both the environment and national security. But whales and other marine life are not yet safe from Department of Defense activities. In the greatest single rollback of marine mammal protections in the last 30 years, Congress approved legislation in November 2003 that will exempt the U.S. military from core provisions of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act. It will now be far easier for the U.S. military to harass and kill whales, dolphins and other marine mammals with high-intensity sonar and underwater explosives. The new exemptions are unlikely to affect the court's ruling on LFA sonar because the Bush administration violated so many different laws in approving that particular system. But the Navy is considering the wider deployment of other, equally dangerous sonar systems.

The Marine Mammal
Consulting Group (MMCG)
MMCG is an independent consulting firm created in response to increased environmental mitigation requirements for offshore projects. MMCG prepares compliance documents, develops mitigation strategies and provides monitoring teams to avoid potential impacts to marine mammals and other wildlife. These same services are offered in connection with submerged cultural and historical resources as well as with permit compliance requirements.
Establishment of the Marine
Mammal Consulting Group, Inc.

MMCG was established in 1992 by Peter Howorth and Lad Handelman. Howorth has worked with marine mammals since 1962. He is recognized by state and federal regulatory agencies as a mitigation expert. He has worked extensively in this country as well as in other countries. Handelman was a founder and CEO of two of today's premier offshore underwater contractors, Oceaneering International and Cal Dive International.
Our Goal
The Preferred Choice

MMCG is the contractor of choice when it comes to environmental planning and offshore mitigation. In the performance of hundreds of projects during the span of this last decade, no significant impacts to marine wildlife have occurred when MMCG has performed the mitigation. No complaints from the public, environmental groups or regulatory agencies have been made for any MMCG projects.

http://www.nrdc.org/wildlife/marine/default.asp
Perhaps nothing in nature is more impressive than a whale breaching the ocean's surface. But these creatures are threatened as never before by humankind's encroachment into the seas and by shore-based industry. NRDC played a leading role in the international victory that saved the gray whale breeding grounds in Mexico's Laguna San Ignacio, which was threatened by industrial development, and we remain vigilant against similar risks posed to other whale populations. We are also tackling undersea noise pollution and play a leading role in opposing an experimental Navy weapon system that would bombard hundreds of nautical miles of the ocean with harmful low-frequency noise.

Australia has many whale strandings, and Orrca works with the National Parks and Wildlife Service at these events. Even by the mid 1980s, few animals could be saved. However Australia has taken a leading role in the development of whale rescue techniques, and today there is an excellent success record at mass strandings. Orrca also cares for hauled-out seals needing protection when they come ashore to rest or recover. We have active research programs to better understand the problems that marine mammals face, and to discover possible solutions. Public education is another of our activities. Everyone in Orrca is a volunteer - our members come from all walks of life, all age groups, and countries around the world.
