Teaching Materials What is marine mammal science? There are about 100 species of aquatic or marine mammals that depend on fresh water or the ocean for part or all of their life. These species include pinnipeds, which are seals, sea lions, fur seals and walrus; cetaceans, which are baleen and toothed whales, ocean and river dolphins, and porpoises; sirenians, which are manatees and dugongs; and some carnivores, such as sea otters and polar bears. Marine mammal scientists try to understand these animals' genetic, systematic, and evolutionary relationships; population structure; community dynamics; anatomy and physiology; behavior and sensory abilities; parasites and diseases; geographic and microhabitat distributions; ecology; management; and conservation.

Niklas Holmstrom posted the following sad news: "Paul Alexander (Alec) Zino, the Madeiran ornithologist and conservationist, passed away on 3 March 2004, aged 88. He gave his name to endemic species Zino's Petrel ( Pterodroma madeira ), which is near extinction with only 45 known breeding pairs. Subfossil evidence has revealed that the bird was once abundant on the island, but declined when the first settlers arrived in 1419.

The North Pacific Universities Marine Mammal Research Consortium conducts research on the relationship between fisheries and marine mammals in the North Pacific Ocean and the Eastern Bering Sea. Solving the Sea Lion Puzzle Fishing, killer whales, commercial whaling, junk food and regime shifts? Research results presented in Kodiak Alaska suggest that ocean climate may be the key piece to resolving the mystery of the disappearing sea lions. See 14 May 2004 Stressed Out Sea Lions Fecal stress hormones may hold the key to determining when a population is in trouble and when it is on the mend. The scoop on stressed sea lions is contained in a recently published paper. See full story 21 April 2004 Hold the Hot Sauce! You know that warm feeling you get after a large meal? Consortium researchers have been conducting experiments to determine whether Steller sea lions can use the heat generated by digestion to help stay warm in frigid Alaskan waters. The results of a new scientific publication may surprise you! See 7 April 2004 Extinction Risks Looking into the Steller's future requires more than a crystal ball. Whether or not the Steller sea lion will go extinct in Alaska is debatable, but preliminary results of a population viability analysis suggest that sea lions in some regions of Alaska may fare better than others.

MMPA Bulletin Overview The Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 (MMPA) was most recently reauthorized in 1994. In passing the MMPA in 1972, Congress found that:
  • certain species and population stocks of marine mammals are, or may be, in danger of extinction or depletion as a result of man's activities;
  • such species and population stocks should not be permitted to diminish beyond the point at which they cease to be a significant functioning element in the ecosystem of which they are a part, and, consistent with this major objective, they should not be permitted to diminish below their optimum sustainable population level;
  • measures should be taken immediately to replenish any species or population stock which has diminished below its optimum sustainable level;

    US CODE COLLECTION TITLE 16 CHAPTER 31 SUBCHAPTER I > Sec. 1361. Next Sec. 1361. - Congressional findings and declaration of policy The Congress finds that - certain species and population stocks of marine mammals are, or may be, in danger of extinction or depletion as a result of man's activities; such species and population stocks should not be permitted to diminish beyond the point at which they cease to be a significant functioning element in the ecosystem of which they are a part, and, consistent with this major objective, they should not be permitted to diminish below their optimum sustainable population. Further measures should be immediately taken to replenish any species or population stock which has already diminished below that population. In particular, efforts should be made to protect essential habitats, including the rookeries, mating grounds, and areas of similar significance for each species of marine mammal from the adverse effect of man's actions; there is inadequate knowledge of the ecology and population dynamics of such marine mammals and of the factors which bear upon their ability to reproduce themselves successfully;
