Mammals have multiple timers
Biological clock watching shows not all are set by daylight.
4 May 2004 LAURA NELSON One body clock reponds to light-dark cycles, but the other doesn't. Our brains contain more than one biological clock, US researchers have shown. They believe that problems such as jet lag are caused when two of the clocks become out of step with each other. Scientists already know that the mammalian brain contains a master clock called the suprachiasmatic nucleus. This is made up of thousands of clock cells that act as pacemakers for the rest of the body and have patterns of gene activity that follow a 24-hour cycle. But no one knew how all these cells were organized. To investigate this, neurologist Horacio de la Iglesia of the University of Washington in Seattle and his colleagues changed rats' normal 24-hour light-dark cycle to one that lasted 22 hours. Then they looked at the patterns of gene activity in the clock cells in the rats' brains. Intriguingly, gene activity in some of the cells switched to the new 22-hour cycle, while other cells stuck to the old 24-hour routine.

Tasmania has many unique mammals found nowhere else in the world. Some, like the Tasmanian devil and Tasmanian tiger are well-known. Others, such as the eastern quoll pademelon and bettong are less well-known, but equally fascinating. Like most of Australia's mammals, the Tasmanian mammal fauna comprises many marsupials, or pouched mammals. Marsupials are remarkable for their method of reproduction, such as the production of very tiny young which complete their development in a pouch. Tasmania has many species which have become, or are on the verge of extinction on mainland Australia. The lack of introduced predators, such as the fox, and the relatively large amount of intact habitat on the island, make Tasmania a final refuge - a last chance - for many species. There are 33 extant native terrestrial and 41 marine mammals which are known to occur in Tasmania. Choose the species or mammal family you wish to see from the full species list below:

(Tursiops melaena) The Bottlenosed Dolphin is perhaps the most familiar of the sea mammals. Their gentle nature has endeared them in our hearts. These highly social animals have actually been known to rescue humans from danger. They are intelligent creatures with a brain that is much larger than ours. Atlantic Spotted Dolphin
(Stenella frontalis) The Atlantic Spotted Dolphin looks very similar to the bottlenosed dolphin except for the noticeable body spots. They are generally somewhat smaller than their cousins. As with all dolphins they travel in close family groups called pods. Pilot Whale
(Globicephala melaena) The Pilot Whale is a small member of the whale family, averaging about 10 feet in length. They are perhaps better known for the mass strandings in which entire pods of these animals will beach themselves in an apparent attempt at suicide. This behavior has yet to be explained.

The House met at eleven of the clock: The LORD CHANCELLOR on the Woolsack.
Wild Mammals (Protection)(Amendment) (No. 2) Bill [HL] Report received. Clause 1 [Amendment of Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996]: Viscount Bledisloe moved Amendment No. 1:
(a) there is a recognised code regulating the conduct of a particular activity or part of any activity;
(b) the alleged offence relates to conduct in the course of that activity or part thereof; and
(c) the conduct in question is contrary to an express provision of that code,
it shall not be a defence to show that that conduct is in the normal and humane conduct of that activity." The noble Viscount said: My Lords, the amendment seeks to deal with a point raised by the noble Lord, Lord Whitty, immediately after Committee. We are very grateful to him for raising it, and hope that once the amendment is made he will be entirely content with the Bill. At present, it is a defence to anyone charged with intentionally causing undue suffering to show that what he did was
