Cochlostyla dautzembergi
(Phillipines).
The malacological collections of the National Museum of Natural Sciences.
The mollusc collections of the MNCN are composed of approximately 120,000 lots representing a large number of species from around the world. Of particular importance are the collections that have been gathered from the Phillipines, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, and the Iberian Peninsula.
The most important collections that were the orginal foundation of the Museum collection are those of: Paz y Membiela, Poey, Graells González Hidalgo y Azpeitia. At present, the collections continue to grow through research projects and through donation of private collections, such as the Ortiz de Zárate, and Álvarez and Cobos collections.
A majority of the historical collections has been dry-preserved, but nowadays acquisitions are principally conserved in alcohol or in microscopic preparations, both for optical microscopy and for S.E.M.

Malacology Section Malcology is the study of shelled organisms. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History boasts between 75,000 and 100,000 specimens, more than half of which have been computer databased. Much of the Museum's malacological collection was collected before 1970, and therefore represents an important historical record of shelled organisms prior to wide-spread depletion of naturally occurring populations. Many mollusks, especially freshwater mussels, have been placed on lists of threatened and endangered species due to overharvesting and habitat loss or alteration. The collection of recent mollusks at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP) is the oldest in the country, and the second largest catalogued one in the world. It currently has more than 430,000 catalogued lots containing about 12 million specimens, including 30,000-35,000 lots preserved in ethanol. Type specimens of more than 400 authors are represented in more than 12,000 type lots. ANSP has specimens from all over the world. Greatest strengths are in shallow-water marine mollusks from the tropical Indo-Pacific and the Western Atlantic and worldwide freshwater and land mollusks.
    History
Henry A. Pilsbry (1862-1957) inherited the Manual of Conchology from Tryon, and while greatly improving its scientific quality, continued the systematic survey of Recent gastropod species through the forty-fifth and final volume, published in 1935. In 1889 (at age 26), Pilsbry began the journal The Nautilus, of which he was an editor until his death. Late in life, he completed a classic monographic study, Land Mollusca of North America (1939-1948). He also published major systematic works on barnacles. Pilsbry authored more than 1,000 articles and books and named more than 5,600 taxa. H. B. Baker (1889-1971), Professor of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania, was associated with the Academy as Research Associate or Fellow from 1925 until his death. He was an outstanding anatomist who studied land and freshwater gastropods. Toward the end of his career, he completed a curatorial revision of the Academy's land and freshwater mollusks, and published lists of the non-marine gastropod types in which he designated numerous lectotypes (Baker 1962-1964).
