Stockholm Sweden Molluscs are one of the most important groups of invertebrates. They live in the sea, on land, and in fresh water. Many species are of economic interest or important as indicators of environmental quality. Furthermore, consequentially to their long and well documented paleontological history they play an important role in stratigraphy and evolutionary research.
  • The Molluscs comprise Chitons, Gastropods, Bivalves, Octopuses and Squids, Tusk shells and the two less well known groups, Monoplacophora and Aplacophora.

  • Study of invertebrate animals (marine, of brackish waters, terrestrial). This research is focused on systematics, morphology, phylogenesis, populations' genetics, ecology, faunistics and zoogeography. Beside the Belgian, and more generally European, faunas, the faunas of Papua New Guinea, of the Indo-Pacific Region and of the Antarctic are also intensively studied. Creation of two exhibition rooms devoted to invertebrates. The conception and setting up of a permanent exhibition devoted to invertebrates requires a great amount of research, not only in the field of invertebrate biology, but also in the fields of didactics and esthetics, as well as in the application of new techniques. Use of data processing in the general management and everyday use of the huge invertebrate collections; the number of specimens exceeds the 10 000 000. Use of the scanning electronic microscope for biological preparations. Application of techniques of molecular biochemistry (protein electrophoresis, DNA and RNA sequencing,...) in the fields of systematics and phylogeny.

The mollusks or molluscs are a large and diverse phylum of Animals , including a variety of familiar creatures, well-known for their decorative shells or as seafood . These range from tiny snails and clams to the octopus and squid (which are considered the most intelligent invertebrates ). The giant squid is the largest invertebrate, and, except for their larvae and some recently captured juveniles, has never been observed alive. Mollusks are triploblastic protostomes . The principal body cavity is a blood-filled hemocoel, with an actual coelom present but reduced to vestiges around the hearts gonads , and metanephridia (kidney-like organs). The body is divided into a head, often with eyes or tentacles, a muscular foot and a visceral mass housing the organs. Covering the body is a thick sheet called the mantle , which in most forms secretes a calcareous shell Development passes through one or two trocophore stages, one of which (the veliger) is unique to the group. These suggest a close relationship between the mollusks and various other protostomes, notably the

The land and freshwater gastropods of the Southwestern United States are the largest component of the 28,000-specimen malacology collection, which includes many type and voucher specimens. The freshwater bivalves of Texas are well-represented. Specimens include extant and Pleistocene fossil mollusks. Much of the collection is based on the research of the late Elmer P. Cheatum, Ph.D. (Southern Methodist University) and Richard W. Fullington, Ph.D. (Curator of Invertebrates, DMNH, retired). Recently the Museum conducted surveys for the Texas Nature Conservancy.
Information on this collection is contained in a four-part bulletin, The Aquatic and Land Mollusks of Texas , published by the Dallas Museum Natural History in the early 1970’s. Also associated with the collection is a reprint file of historical biological publications.

Malacology
The study of the molluscan animal and its habits
Cypraea fimbriata Gmelin, 1791 Introduction - Malacology is the term which usually describes the present day study of the animals which are assigned (by mankind) to the phylum Mollusca . Many of these animals have shells (or shell-like plates) which are studied by individuals who are generally referred to as conchologists. If this were all that there was to the name-calling, people would get along fairly well. Unfortunately, it isn't. More will follow on names and their callings. Some researchers come to malacology naturally because they seek to understand the organism as it expresses itself in nature. Some come to it as an extension of their study of the shells of molluscs and some, it seems, embrace it as a refuge from the generally improved informational state of conchologists, amateur or advanced. The study of the animal which (often) produces a shell will lead to other branches of scientific endeavor. Genetics will be one of those branches. In marine molluscs, little more than speculation has occurred due to the necessity of the veligers to feed, and be fed upon, in the planktonic 'soup' of the ocean. An interesting trait of the cowry has been seen by this collector on many occasions. It was first observed in some live
