Last edited: March 5, 2004 AN IDENTIFICATION MANUAL FOR THE FRESHWATER SNAILS OF FLORIDA Fred G. Thompson Curator of Malacology Florida Museum of Natural History University of Florida Gainesville, Florida 32611-7800 INTRODUCTION The aquatic snail fauna of the southeastern United States has long been recognized for its richness and diversity. Throughout the 19 th and 20 th It became increasingly important to provide an identification manual of the freshwater snails of Florida for many reasons. There were no references to cover the entire state. Those available covered only part of the state or part of the fauna. Our knowledge of the fauna has greatly increased during recent years, and a summary of this information was desirable to facilitate other kinds of study. The bioeconomic importance of snails to environmental issues has become increasingly relevant because of the impact that economic development has on Florida waterways. The first edition of The Freshwater Snails of Florida: a Manual for Identification was published in 1984. It was well received, and it served the interests and needs of many people. As was anticipated, further work on the systematics of the southeastern freshwater snail fauna created the need for subsequent revision in 1999, and for this updated version.

RESEARCH
COLLECTION
  • Size: The LACM Malacology collection ranks third in the nation terms of number of lots and specimens and contains the largest collection of eastern Pacific mollusks (Arctic Alaska to southern Chile) in the world. The extensive travels and research of curator Dr. James McLean have substantially increased the Malacology holdings to that of a world class collection. Taxonomic Coverage: The collection contains representatives of all of the molluscan classes, although the current emphasis is with the shelled marine gastropods. Marine bivalves, chitons, and scaphopods are also well represented as are freshwater bivalves. LACM maintains one of the largest collections of micromollusks in the nation including the micro-gastropod families Rissoidae, Vitrinellidae, and Caecidae. Holdings of the gastropod family Terebridae were greatly increased by the recent acquisition of the Twila Bratcher collection. Geographic Coverage: LACM malacology maintains a world-wide collection with an emphasis on the eastern Pacific region (Arctic Alaska to southern Chile) and is arranged geographically within each species. Mollusks of the Californian (Point Conception, California to central Baja California) and Panamic (central Baja California to northern Peru) zoogeographic provinces are particularly well represented. The Alaskan holdings were substantially increased in 1992 with the acquistion of mollusks from the collection of the late Rae Baxter.

Journal of Medical and Applied malacology. Literature Cited. See current number of the Journal for Medical and Applied malacology for desired form of citing.
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/mologis/MedAplMa.html
Journal of Medical and Applied Malacology
The International Society for Medical and Applied Malacology is devoted specifically to the concerns of applied malacology, i.e., to medical, veterinary and agricultural malacology. The Society is for scientists that work with mollusks as mediators of parasitic diseases of humans and domestic and other animals, and as pests to agriculture, materials, etc. Medical aspects include such diseases as schistosomiasis, paragonimiasis, fascioliasis, fasciolopsiasis, clonorchiasis and eosinophilic meningoencephalitis. The Society's journal, the Journal of Medical and Applied Malacology, includes articles dealing with, e.g., molluscan ecology, distribution, taxonomy, biochemistry, physiology, functional morphology, control, eradication and host-parasite relationships. Also included, beginning with Vol. 2, is an annual literature coverage of pertinent articles on medical and applied malacology published in other journals. In addition to publishing the Journal of Medical and Applied Malacology, the Society sponsors congresses on medical and applied malacology at periodic intervals. The first congress was held in Monterrey, Mexico, in 1987. The second congress was held in Seoul, Korea, in 1990. The third congress was held in Camden, Australia, in 1993. The fourth congress will be held in Santiago, Chile, in 1996.
Directions to Authors
The Journal for Medical and Applied Malacology will publish the results of original work, of either descriptive or experimental nature, devoted primarily or exclusively to the study of mollusks of medical, veterinary and agricultural importance, and their parasites, and will publish reviews of major research in these areas of medical and applied malacology. The articles must not be published elsewhere.

Mollusk collections at the American Museum of Natural History are the basis of an active field and laboratory research program, headed by Curator-in-Charge, Dr. Paula M. Mikkelsen . Dr. Mikkelsen's current research focuses on the systematics and diversity of marine bivalves, especially those of the tropical western Atlantic, supported by private funding and a National Science Foundation PEET grant. An Histology Laboratory (also available for use by trained affiliated researchers) provides an essential venue for ellucidating anatomical characters in shelled mollusks whose soft morphology is often poorly known. Affiliated personnel are pursuing similar studies of freshwater bivalves (especially Unionidae) and opisthobranchs, with special faunal emphases on the northeastern United States and Caribbean. The AMNH mollusk collections currently comprise over 306,000 catalogued lots, including several thousand type specimens and a growing alcohol-preserved collection as a result of active field projects. Particular strengths of the collections are in some important historical collections, including those of John C. Jay, and Gordon Nowell-Usticke, and expedition collections such as the AMNH Congo Expedition (1909-1915) and marine abyssal material collected by the research vessel "Vema" (1955-1962). Our collections represent at least 80% of the known species for the families Cypraeidae, Conidae, Epitoniidae, Harpidae, Pleurotomariidae, Strombidae, and Xenophoridae. The collection is particularaly rich in shell specimens from tropical oceans, with a more recent emphasis on the Caribbean. The acquisition of a Giant Squid (

Welcome!
Initiation Date: October 08, 2001) This section of "Man and Mollusc" is being developed as a resource for the serious shell collector, malacologist and conchologist. This is a separate section from the site's General Interest and Internet Resource pages. In order for you to get the most of your visit to this section, it is advisable that you have at least a minimal understanding of malacology and its terminology. Of course, all are welcome but amateur viewers BEWARE! " Serious scientific knowledge and terminology onboard!" My hopes and intentions for this new venture is that information gained from such a joint sharing of top quality information will help in answering some of the many molluscan questions and problems faced by scientists and shell collectors today.

It's hard to imagine life without a good field guide to slugs, but Gordon, thank god, wrote a doozy of one. In a mere 48 pages, Gordon covers slug anatomy, the slug family tree, the eating habits of slugs, slugs in your garden, slugs in the wild and slugs at home. Lucid and interesting, this is the slug guide to beat all others.

Malacology
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Mollusks Animalia Animals are the group of organisms that constitute the kingdom Animalia. Typically, they are multicellular in composition and capable of both locomotion and responding to their surroundings. Unlike plants, animals do not photosynthesize, instead consuming plants or other organisms to grow and sustain themselves. Most animals have a body plan that becomes fixed as they mature and, except in animals that metamorphose, is established early in their development from embryos. The scientific study of animals is called zoology.
Click the link for more information. Mollusca Class Scientific classification refers to how biologists group and categorize extinct and living species of organisms. Modern classification has its roots in the system of Carolus Linnaeus, who grouped species according to shared physical characteristics. These groupings have been revised since Linnaeus to improve consistency with the Darwinian principle of common descent. Molecular systematics, which uses Genomic DNA analysis has driven many recent revisions and is likely to continue to do so. Scientific classification belongs to the science of taxonomy or biological systematics.
