Introduction The last few years have dawned a new era in aquarium lighting. Although the basic technologies have not changed significantly, we have reached a stage where we can more closely replicate natural sunlight. We are still far from being able to 'bottle' the sun, but we can provide a much better environment for the plants and animals we keep than we could just a few short years ago. And more importantly, we are beginning to understand the requirements of the animals we keep in our aquariums. The goal of the article is to discuss recent advances in lighting technologies and describe the relative benefits of the advances. It is not my goal to deal the basic concepts of lighting, as other people done that Advances in Fluorescent Lighting Fluorescent lighting has been around for a number of years, and has enjoyed some of the most spectacular advances of all the lighting technologies. Years ago fluorescent lighting demonstrated a radical departure from standard incandescent lamps. They required less power, produced more light per watt, and lasted much longer. These basic advantages are still with us today. However, designers have recently begun to produce very specialize fluorescent lamps. Over the last few years manufacturers have begun to take a hard look at the color temperature and spectrum of lamps. They are now providing lamps which target specific groups within the aquarists societies. For example, manufacturers now offer 50/50 lamps, comprising 50% daylight output and 50% actinic output. What is 'actinic output'? Actinic light is really light frequencies which are clustered around 420nm. These are aimed mainly at reefkeepers, who use actinic lamps to maintain a healthy microreef. Additionally, some lamps are designed to produce peak emissions near the frequencies at which chlorophyll absorbs the majority of its energy, thus targeting aquatic gardeners.
