FOREWORD
This is the third guide in the series Teaching the History of Science: Resources and Strategies, published under the auspices of the Committee on Education by the History of Science Society. These guides, written by specialists, are intended for the use of historians of science as well as general historians and any other teachers who wish to begin to revise a history of science course or to incorporate new topics into an existing course. The guides will be published in the Newsletter first, then as a pamphlet.
The first guide, The Scientific Revolution , appeared in the July 1986 issue of the Newsletter; the second, Science, Technology, and Public Policy , in the April 1987 issue. The editorial board for each guide is drawn from the Society's Committee on Education. The committee welcomes comments on the value of these guides, as well as on suggested topics for future guides.
INTRODUCTION
In recent years, scholarly work in the history of twentieth-century life science has increased dramatically. This development represents a break in two traditions within the field of history of science: first, from the dominating influence of the history of the physical sciences and mathematics; and second, from the focus on the period before the twentieth century.

About the Conference
The life sciences have become increasingly quantitative as new technologies facilitate collection and analysis of vast amounts of data ranging from complete genomic sequences of organisms to satellite imagery of forest landscapes on continental scales. As a consequence, mathematics and computational science have become crucial technologies for the study of complex models of biological processes. The SIAM Activity Group on Life Sciences brings together researchers who seek to develop and apply mathematical and computational methods in all areas of the life sciences. This conference of the activity group will provide a cross-disciplinary forum for catalyzing mathematical research relevant to the life sciences. It will facilitate rapid diffusion of new mathematical and computational methods in the life sciences, and may stimulate more researchers to work in these important areas. Mathematicians, life scientists, computational biologists, bioengineers and others interested in mathematical and computational analysis of biological systems are encouraged to attend.

(Brochure en fr de Genetic and the future of Europe (Brochure en fr de) European Group on Life Sciences Over the past decades the life sciences have made tremendous strides, with major potential benefits for human health, the environment, and European industry. The almost complete sequencing of the human genome is an example of this. At the same time, applications of the new knowledge raise ethical and safety concerns among the public and policy-makers that must be addressed. The European Group on Life Sciences (EGLS) was established in April 2000 by the Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin to meet his need for high-level advice on the life sciences and technologies. One of the group's tasks is to inform the Research Commissioner on the current situation in this field and on imminent or foreseeable developments. Another objective is to contribute to the organisation and animation of a Life Sciences Discussion Platform, enabling scientists to engage in a debate with the various 'stakeholders' interested in the beneficial application and dissemination of the new knowledge.

Huntingdon Life Sciences: Running for Its Life
Notice: The Superior Court of California has issued an order prohibiting certain activity relating to Marsh and its employees
IDA is thrilled to announce several important successes in the battle to stop Huntingdon Life Sciences' (HLS's) cruelty. In February, Stephens, Inc, HLS's largest shareholder, announced that it had sold all its shares and investments in the notorious animal testing laboratory as a result of an unrelenting international campaign against HLS. Prior to the divestment by Stephens, Inc., the two other leading HLS investors, Oracle Partners and Bank of New York, also announced their departure from supporting HLS. Today, HLS is teetering on financial ruin. In an effort to save itself, the company has taken a new name and listed itself as a U.S. company, Life Sciences Research, Inc. The new company has yet to acquire any sort of domestic backing and remains in financial limbo, although an anonymous foreign investor has assumed Stephens1 financial stake in HLS. IDA is committed to exposing the identity of this investor. HLS and its former primary investor, Stephens, Inc., sued IDA in 2001, claiming our protests against the company and its investors constituted racketeering. IDA fought back against these outrageous claims and was able to walk away with a settlement agreement that upheld our First Amendment right to protest. Meanwhile, IDA continues to expose the horrors at HLS by trying to gain access to sealed files that would expose even more abuse at this lab.
