The Mapuche Language Page
Under Construction The Mapuche are an indigenous people who live in southern Chile and Argentina . The 1992 Chilean census indicates that there are 928,500 Mapuche living in Chile, plus numerous others in Argentina. The traditional Mapuche lifestyle is agricultural, but many Mapuche have moved to cities like Santiago (the capital of Chile), or Temuco, which is a center of commerce for the 9th region. The name Mapuche is composed of two words "mapu", which means "land", and "che", which means people. Their language is called "Mapudungun", and is composed of "mapu" and "dungun", which means "talk", or "speech".

    168. The Mapuche Language
An overview by Jennifer Arnold from Stanford University.

    The Mapuche Language
    Jennifer Arnold
    Stanford University
The Mapuche are an indigenous people who live in southern Chile and Argentina. The name Mapuche is composed of two parts: "Mapu", which means land, and "che", which means "people". The Mapuche call their language Mapudungun (or Mapudungu), which is composed of "mapu" (land) and "dungun" (speech). Another word that is sometimes used is the Spanish word for the Mapuche and their language, which is "Araucano" (or in English, "Araucanian"). In this article, I will tell you a little bit about the language of the Mapuche. In the process, I will also teach you a little bit about linguistics, which is the study of how language is organized in our minds.
One job of linguists is to compare languages, and observe the different mechanisms that languages use to communicate similar things. In the study of linguistics, it is important to realize that no language is better than any other language, and even that no dialects are better than any other dialect. The job of linguists is not to tell people how they ought to speak, but rather to describe how language works and try to understand what it is to be human.

Making a principled distinction between one human language and another is often not possible. One major issue is the dialect continuum phenomena, where the boundaries between named language groups are necessarily arbitrary. For instance, there are dialects of German very similar to Dutch which are not mutually intelligible with other dialects of (what we call) German. Note that there are parallels to biology, where it is not always possible to make a principled distinction between one species and the next. In either case (at least given the standard view on the evolution of the species), the ultimate difficulty stems from both languages and species descending from one another, with modification. (See

Jewish Groups. language has been a barrier to communication among manynationalities. We have to help the Hebrew language come alive.
    http://www.geocities.com/jewishgroups/2Language.html
Language has been a barrier to communication among many nationalities. However, Jews have always been united by a common distinctive language - either Hebrew, Aramaic, Yiddish, Ladino, or Moroccan. This fluency in multiple languages has been advantageous to Jews despite our dispersion around the world. Although this need has decreased in recent years, we still need to communicate easily with other Jews by translating or writing. We have to help the Hebrew language come alive. We also need to help our children remember their native language.
