This coursebook is directed primarily at undergraduate students of linguistics. It provides an introduction to computer programming focused on natural language processing. Through a simple introduction to the Logo programming language and a range of sample applications, it aims to develop a taste for the range of problems (and, with luck, some of the delights) which are encountered in attempting to implement computer systems capable of handling normal speech and language. Having worked through the materials presented here, students should be able to apply their programming skills directly in the implementation of small scale natural language systems and indirectly as mental tools to assist them as they grapple with the rigorous representation of theoretical models and descriptive statements within linguistics. Despite the restricted target audience, the materials may well also be useful to teachers and learners of Logo, across a variety of disciplines and educational environments, who feel a need for something other than turtle domination. At an even more remote level, of course, programming notions which are acquired by practice with materials such as these may naturally be redeployed in any circumstance as universally useful

    Monash University Linguistics Papers
Monash University Linguistics Papers is a refereed journal for new research investigating language-related issues. The linguistics research community at Monash University is broadly based. It includes current students, former graduates and staff of the Linguistics Program , as well as researchers working on language and language-related issues from other programs and faculties throughout the university. Monash University Linguistics Papers , although an initiative of the Linguistics Program, is a journal which aims to bring together this research community and showcase their work. Past issues of MULP have consisted of articles, review articles on a current topic in linguistics and book or software reviews. Most contributors are associated with the Monash Linguistics Program either as postgraduate students or recent graduates, but other relevant submissions are also considered. Student research done in collaboration with a staff member is welcomed as it fosters ties between students and staff. Commissioned pieces by visiting and resident academics on their areas of expertise and interest are also included. FOR MORE INFO View Abstracts from previous issues of MULP

I'm also a PhD student at the Department of Swedish at Göteborg University as well as enrolled in the Graduate School of Language Technology ( GSLT ). Here's some info on the courses I've taken Before joining SICS for my master's thesis in april 1997, I was a student at the educational programme in language engineering at Uppsala university. I became a full-time member of HUMLE in february 1998, and have since then worked with the issue of reusing language resources, as well as with designing and developing an open architecture for information refinement. I defended my licentiate of philosophy thesis entitled Requirements and Design Considerations for an Open and General Architecture for Information Refinement on March 13, 2002, in Uppsala. Research interests
  • In the PolyLex project, Lynne Cahill and I are developing a trilingual computer lexicon for the core vocabulary of Dutch, English and German. From a linguistic perspective, we are ascertaining the extent to which these Germanic languages can be lexically related, examining formal ways of expressing linguistic generalizations that hold across two or more languages, and assessing the degree to which the historical links between languages can be exploited in descriptions of the languages as they are now. From a computational perspective, we are evaluating how well existing techniques for representing monolingual lexicons generalize to the multilingual case and investigating the extent to which multilanguage lexical representation techniques can be applied within monolingual lexicons.

    Introduction
The Carolina Working Papers in Linguistics (CWPL) features papers related to Language and Linguistics from students and faculty at Universities in North Carolina and South Carolina. Invited topics include syntax, morphology, phonetics, phonology, semantics, reading, discourse analysis, psycholinguistics, first and second language acquisition, variation, sociolinguistics, anthropological linguistics, speech pathology, computational linguistics, composition and rhetoric, historical linguistics, philosophy of language, ESL/EFL teaching and methodology. We are very pleased with the positive response from the students and faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill and USC-Columbia when initially approached about CWPL. A special thanks is due to Rachel Hayes who took the first steps towards organizing this journal. Her commitment to the project has been phenomenal. We are grateful to the USC Linguistics Program director, Stanley Dubinsky, for his support. We are also grateful to all the students who submitted papers and the faculty who read the submissions. Without their participation, this project could not have become a reality.

    Description
This international journal is devoted to the applications of educational technology and applied linguistics to problems of foreign language teaching and learning. Attention is paid to all languages and to problems associated with the study and teaching of English as a second or foreign language. The journal serves as a vehicle of expression for colleagues in developing countries. System prefers its contributors to provide articles which have a sound theoretical base with a visible practical application which can be generalized. The review section may take up works of a more theoretical nature to broaden the background.
