Languages and Linguistics
I spent most of my 20 years in the US Army as a translator of Mandarin Chinese and Japanese documents. I have also studied, to a greater or lesser extent, Taiwanese (Holo/Hokkien) Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, Malay/Indonesian, Vietnamese, Spanish, German, and French. I attended the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center at the Presidio of Monterey, California for 47-week courses in Mandarin (1963), Japanese (1967-68), and Egyptian Arabic (1973). I also spent a year there (1979-80) on a team writing Mandarin extension courses for interrogators. I lived in Taiwan for 20 months (1964-66) and in Japan for 7.5 years (1968-72 and 1976-79). Unfortunately, I didn't get much chance to use my Arabic, so my skills have completely atrophied. I haven't worked as a translator since 1980 and I'm not a linguist, but I'm still fascinated by languages and linguistics. I'm very interested in learning about Chinese linguistics, especially dialectology and reconstructions of earlier stages of the language. I'm also interested in Japanese as it relates to the reconstruction of Chinese. The Chinese dialect that interests me most is my wife's dialect, Taiwanese Holo (also known as Hokkien). I've put up a Web page on the missionary romanization system , which is the most common system used for Holo.

A Personal Study of the Okinawan Language
    by Alice Masako Fujiwara
Okinawan dialects retain ancient Japanese which have been recorded in Kojiki (the Ancient Chronicle of Japan) and Manyooshuu (the oldest book of poems). Examples are: English Okinawan Dialect Old Japanese dragonfly aakeejuu akezu (tonbo) loving/liking kanasan kanashi (itooshii) jealousy uwaanai uwanari (shitto) According to linguistic history, Okinawan dialects have been estimated to be the language spoken in the Old Tomb Age and Yamato Era of Japan. My mother was correct in her belief that the Okinawan dialect is derived from the Japanese language. I think that she feels that although Okinawa is part of Japan, it still stands apart, a distinct culture and people of a proud heritage. Uchina is the Okinawan word for the Ryukyu Islands. The Okinawan people are the Uchinanchu who speak Uchinaguchi. The Yamatunchu are the people from the main islands of Japan. They speak Yamatoguchi. According to my mother, when she was growing up in Okinawa, there were three levels of Okinawan dialect. The highest level was the language spoken by the aristocrats or ruling class in Shuri. The next level was the language spoken by the Shizoku or Samurai class. The lowest level by spoken by the Heimin or Farmer class. She said that she spoke the language of the Shizoku and can understand the other two dialects. Examples of the Shizoku and Heimin languages given to me by her are listed as follows:

    Description
Language Sciences is a forum for debate, conducted so as to be of interest to the widest possible audience, on conceptual and theoretical issues in the various branches of general linguistics. The journal is also concerned with bringing to linguists' attention current thinking about language within disciplines other than linguistics itself; relevant contributions from anthropologists, philosophers, psychologists and sociologists, among others, will be warmly received. In addition, the Editor is particularly keen to encourage the submission of essays on topics in the history and philosophy of language studies, and review articles discussing the import of significant recent works on language and linguistics.
