Facilities
To carry out its mission the JRC Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements has a unique combination of facilities and expertise that draw strength from research performed in collaboration with organisations both within and beyond the EU and which, by virtue of their uniqueness and political neutrality, for a reference basis for the development of a European Research Area. Among those facilities are:
An Elaborate Facility for the Production of Reference Materials
IRMM has developed unique high technology equipment and expertise for the efficient production of a large variety of highest quality biological and food reference materials. The Reference Materials laboratory is one of the largest and most sophisticated in the world and hosts a unique multi-functional and flexible production laboratory, clean chambers, cryo-grinding, freeze drying, high purity milling, ultrafine classification and levitation melting. This laboratory can quickly adapt its production facilities to cater for urgent requests that stem from the policy makers. Associated with this facility is a very modern analytical laboratory equipped with various spectroscopic methods, neutron activation analysis and gas and liquid chromatography (various PCR and immunochemical techniques are being added) used for in-process control and certification analyses.

The focus of the Facility Core within the past several years has been in the development of the metals analysis facility. With the purchase of a new HPLC system we will be able to further develop this area of the facility to measure and detect organic/inorganic metabolites, peptides and proteins. The ability to detect and separate peptides will facilitate collaborations with the Proteomics facility at the Skirball Institute at NYU for the determination of protein size and identity using MALDI-TOF MS.

They have written test plans conducted testing , and written reports regarding detector performance under both laboratory and battlefield conditions. Our employees have used the most advanced and sensitive CW vapor detection equipment for use at incinerator sites. Since many of our employees are accredited instructors training needs are also readily met. Instrumentation used for the detection of CW agents ranges from the simple ( detector paper which changes color upon contact with CW droplets) to the very complex ( gas chromatography assisted tandem mass spectrometry , for example). The method chosen depends on a number of factors, such as response time, cost, reliability, false alarm rate, sensitivity, or ease of use. STC personnel are experts at choosing the proper instrument for the desired application and training the user in its operation.

Services - Analytical Chemistry (Analytical Capabilities)
For over 20 years, CompuChem has been the nation's leading provider of Contract Lab Program (CLP) and CLP-like data. Headquartered in Cary, NC, CompuChem has an experienced staff, a broad range of analytical services, and an unfailing commitment to quality and method compliance. The company maintains a wide variety of certifications and capabilities and is actively involved in both the Federal Services and Commercial environmental sectors. The company has analyzed samples of every type conceivable type of matrix, including, fish tissue/organs/oil, bird tissue/organs, concrete chips, heavy oil, and ceiling tiles. Our environmental testing laboratory has analyzed tens of thousands of samples with sludge, sediment, soil, water, biota, and waste matrices. CompuChem operates one of the largest single-site environmental analytical instrumentation facilities in the country. CompuChem is able to analyze large delivery groups of samples for a wide variety of parameters. This large, diverse analytical capacity at one site avoids the potential confusion and error that could be introduced by dividing large sample batches between facilities located at separate locations. CompuChem consists of several separate environmental testing laboratory areas that prepare and analyze environmental samples for the presence of organic and inorganic contaminants. Written standard operating procedures (SOPs) that comply with published analytical methods are in place in each laboratory area at CompuChem. These procedures are derived from methods published in the following documents:

Analytical Chemistry Laboratory The Analytical Chemistry Laboratory (ACL) operates in the Argonne National Laboratory system as a full-cost-recovery service center, but its mission also includes a complementary research and development component in analytical chemistry and its applications. Because of the diversity of research and development work at Argonne, the ACL handles a wide range of analytical problems in its technical support role. It is common for Argonne research and development programs to generate unique problems that require significant development of methods and adaptation of techniques to obtain useful analytical data. Thus, much of the support work done by the ACL is very similar to applied research in analytical chemistry. Some routine or standard analyses are done, but the ACL usually works with commercial laboratories if high-volume production analyses are required by its clients. Organizationally, the ACL is in Argonne’s Chemical Engineering Division (the Division). The ACL provides technical support not only for programs in the Division (its major client) but also for the other technical divisions and programs at Argonne.
