Long-Distance Laboratories
Collaboratories are changing the way scientists work with and educators teach about instrumentation.
Jim Kling T he first time I got ready to call Nestor Zaluzec, he was talking on the phone to someone else. A few minutes later, he was conferring with someone in his laboratory wearing an aquamarine T-shirt and faded blue jeans, and I didn't want to interrupt. Finally, he was alone at his computer console, so I picked up the phone again and called him.
Seeing is believing. Zaluzec at work. One thing about Nestor, he's relaxed. It isn't often that, during an interview, the source props his feet on the table and leans back in his chair. You get the sense that Zaluzec, who is one of the leaders of two of Argonne National Laboratory's remote collaboration projects, isn't worried about the ultimate success of the programs. Give it time . . . we'll get it done, his body language seems to say. Getting all of this input from just a telephone conversation seems a good trick, until you realize that Zaluzec has set up a remote control Web camera near his computer console. To check in on him, I just sent my browser to http://tpm.amc.anl.gov

Contact: John F. Riebow, Ph.D., Section Manager; 517-335-8344 Analytical Chemistry Section HISTORY The laboratory was on of the pioneers in pesticide residue analysis and served as one of the community Study Laboratories form 1965 to 1970 under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). For next ten years, it served as a contract laboratory for USEPA's National Tissue Monitoring Program, gaining considerable experience, knowledge and expertise in the analysis of biological media for organic contaminants. The laboratory was the first to identify polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in human tissues and body fluids with confirmation of the findings performed by USEPA. In 1981, members of the staff co-authored with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) an analytical method for PCB and PBB in human blood, which was accepted by the Association of Analytical Chemist (AOAC) as a standard method in 1991.
The laboratory conducts the analyses for numerous projects funded by state and federal agencies involving human blood and/or tissue specimens for PCB, PBB and other organic contaminants. The cohorts for epidemiological studies, such as the Fisheater and Long Term PBB studies, are unique and among the largest and longest standing scientific cohorts in the country. Further studies are being designed to determine the relationship between exposure to environmental contaminants and human health. Presently the laboratory analyzes 700 -1,000 fish samples a year for environmental contaminants under an agreement with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) Fish Monitoring Program which results in the

  • Analytical chemistry laboratories Location: Ottawa Contact: These laboratories specialize in the total analysis of geological and environmental samples for most elements of the periodic table. They are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including laser ablation and electrothermal vaporization ICP mass spectrometry. Extremely small samples can be analysed for trace elements and for isotope ratios of certain elements such as boron, lithium, lead and osmium. Chelation ion chromatography coupled with plasma spectrochemical techniques allows for the analysis of pore fluids and brines, as well as ultra-trace analysis of geological materials. The laboratories collaborate with industry and universities on method and instrument development projects, and offer training in instrumental technology and applications to geochemical analysis.
