Unfortunately, there's no universal definition of KM, just as there's no agreement as to what constitutes knowledge in the first place. For this reason, it's best to think of KM in the broadest context. Succinctly put, KM is the process through which organizations generate value from their intellectual and knowledge-based assets. Most often, generating value from such assets involves sharing them among employees, departments and even with other companies in an effort to devise best practices. It's important to note that the definition says nothing about technology; while KM is often facilitated by IT, technology by itself is not KM.
Think of a golf caddie as a simplified example of a knowledge worker. Good caddies do more than carry clubs and track down wayward balls. When asked, a good caddie will give advice to golfers, such as, "The wind makes the ninth hole play 15 yards longer." Accurate advice may lead to a bigger tip at the end of the day. On the flip side, the golfer — having derived a benefit from the caddie's advice — may be more likely to play that course again. If a good caddie is willing to share what he knows with other caddies, then they all may eventually earn bigger tips. How would KM work to make this happen? The caddie master may decide to reward caddies for sharing their tips by offering them credits for pro shop merchandise. Once the best advice is collected, the course manager would publish the information in notebooks (or make it available on PDAs), and distribute them to all the caddies. The end result of a well-designed KM program is that everyone wins. In this case, caddies get bigger tips and deals on merchandise, golfers play better because they benefit from the collective experience of caddies, and the course owners win because better scores lead to more repeat business.

, Director of the Netherlands Design Institute in Amsterdam That's the best short description I've found on knowledge management. Information overload is a given today, yet important information is acquired regularly and needs to be made available to those who can use it. Knowledge Management addresses this problem. Knowledge continually needs to be freshened, too. Best practices evolve. Knowledge acquired through knowledge management needs not only to be made available to individuals. It needs to be integrated into software as knowledge support as well. Some of the major themes in knowledge management are

    What is Knowledge Management ?
Computer-based systems have become basic to the management of data and information in our society and economy. These systems are well developed in business and government organisations, and with developments like the World Wide Web are becoming ubiquitous in society. Knowledge of how to process and manipulate data and information is implicit in computer-based systems; knowledge of organisational procedures, for example, is encoded into administrative and office systems that control and facilitate the workings of the organisation. Knowledge of policy and precedent can be built into expert and decision support systems to advise decision makers. Knowledge of how the natural world works (science) and how humans can intervene for their own purposes (technology) is created by research and published in journals and books, taught at university and by other means percolates through the community of knowledge workers Knowledge Management is the field that examines how knowledge, whether public of private might be captured, represented, stored and applied for a range of knowledge intensive tasks – whether that be decision support, computer assisted learning, research (eg. hypothesis testing) or research support.

McGee's Musings "The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity." - Dorothy Parker
Tuesday, May 13, 2003 Weblogs and knowledge management Another stream of recent posts has focused on weblogs as a tool for knowledge management both to capture and share knowledge. They include a mix of posts focusing on individual knowledge workers and on knowledge workers within organizations. Lou Rosenfeld, author of the excellent Information Architecture for the World Wide Web , has a good post on blogging k-logging Dave Pollard has generated a great set of posts on weblogs as knowledge management tools. His weblog in general has become a must read for me.: Blogs in Business: The Weblog as Filing Cabinet Weblogs could be a mechanism to coherently codify and 'publish' in a completely voluntary and personal manner the individual worker's entire filing cabinet, complete with annotations, marginalia, post-its and personal indexing system. A Weblog-Based Content Architecture for Business (this post also has some excellent diagrams of how weblogs fit within the entreprise) The fundamental difference between this and traditional enterprise-wide content architectures, is that knowledge under this model resides with and is controlled by the individual. The knowledge of the community is simply the sum of the knowledge residing in the weblogs of the community members (within any shared categorizations the community members decide to establish, and pushed to other community members by the weblog's 'subscription' functionality. The knowledge of the enterprise is simply the sum of the knowledge residing in the weblogs of all employees, made accessible through the weblog's publishing and subscription functionality, using the tools present in the weblog itself. Theoretically, depending on the robustness of the company's networks, the Intranet could be slimmed down to nothing more than a set of organized links, with no actual 'content' whatsoever.

The Knowledge Management Connection Communication is the common thread of knowledge management.
Every company has multiple knowledge management requirements, often including content management, remote collaboration, and effective customer support. You ll need specific technologies or changes in processes and management practices in order to address those and other needs. But all the knowledge problems of business have a common element: human communication itself. If you can turn communication activities into a source of profit, productivity, and competitiveness — instead of a cost of doing business — then you have solved the most important problem of knowledge-driven businesses. That s what we do. The Knowledge Management Connection provides a systematic knowledge-management framework and explicit model for knowledge resources that allow you to

Welcome to the KM Research Program The KM Research Program at Monash University is one of the formal research groups operating since 1995. We are conducting studies towards a comprehensive approach to knowledge management for intelligent decision support.
We proposed a model to support a task-based knowledge management which helps people to explicitly recognise existing and to create new knowledge while performing a task. It follows our "learning-by-doing" philosophy.
    What is Knowledge Management?
Knowledge Management is a broad concept that addresses the full range of processes by which an organisation deploys knowledge.
These involve the acquisition, retention, storage, distribution and use of knowledge in an organisation.
