http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/ges/about/geomorph.html
Geomorphology is the formal study of landforms and the processes that shape them. Geomorphology forms a core for the whole of physical geography, because it is within the framework of the landscape that soils, plants, and indeed ecosystems develop and function. The study of geomorphology consequently is an essential component of the training of any physical geographer or natural scientist. It is also a field of study that can be very enriching personally. A knowledge of geomorphology deepens the experience of travel, and the relationship between an individual and their surroundings. The study of landforms has a long history, dating back to ancient times, running through the work of great observers like Leonardo da Vinci, and into modern times in the work of outstanding thinkers like the American G.K. Gilbert. It has broadened its focus by moving beyond the earth, forming one branch of modern planetary science. Here, geomorphology has been applied to resolving the nature of the supposed landforms created by flowing water on other planets of the solar system (e.g. the Martian rilles). Geomorphology is carried out as both a pure academic pursuit, and as an intensely relevant applied discipline. It is employed in managing the effects of agriculture, pastoralism, mining, river improvement and flood control, and many other areas of concern in modern society.

You are here: Classroom Grade 11 Geography Geomorphology ... Karst Geomorphology : 1. Limestone Regions Other units in this lesson: Features of Limestone Regions Outcomes:
To understand the formation of features on and below the landscape in limestone regions.
Carboniferous limestone or dolomite is a rock formed many millions of years ago in an aquous environment. When the earth's atmosphere was composed mainly of carbon dioxide large lakes and seas covered parts of South Africa. In these lakes algae absorbed the carbon dioxide and over time massive layers of dolomite were formed. Today these deposits are found in areas extending from the Northern Cape ( Kuruman ) to Mpumulanga and into the Northern Province at Tschipse
Well known areas are the sterkfontein caves of Gauteng and Cango caves of the Eastern cape.
Limestone ( dolomite ) is a grey looking rock has many joints which allows water to infiltrate, as this takes place the rock is gradually dissolved by the acidic rainwater which carries away the material in solution . In this way a series of underground passageways and caverns develop. If the water table drops owing to downcutting of the drainage system then a new series of caves will develop.
Sinkholes:
  • As a cavern dries out the roof will collapse, when this reaches the surface a sinkhole forms.

http://www.uwsp.edu/geo/faculty/lemke/geomorphology/lecture_outlines/08_karst_pr
A. Introduction
  • karst connotes an assemblage of landforms and a set of processes
B. The Driving Forces
1. The Solution Process
  • Main reaction:
CaCO + H O + CO = Ca
2. Factors Controlling the Solution Rate
a. amount dissolved CO
  • partial pressure of CO2 in air: as the P CO2 increasese, the quantity of CO2 absorbed by water increases
temperature: cooler water is capable of dissolving more CO2 that warmer water at a given P
biological processes: decaying humus is an important source of CO
b. climate
  • temperature, precipitation, biological activity
runoff generation is the most important effect of climate
C. The Resisting Framework
1. Lithology and structure - ideal conditions for a fully developed karst landscape requires limestone that is:
a. fairly pure (over 60% calcite for some karst; over 90% calcite for fully developed karst landscape)
b. very thick
c. mechanically strong
d. massively jointed
2. Porosity and permeability

72. Science, Earth Sciences, Geology, Geomorphology: Caves And Karst

Shili Scenic Area is between Mt. Jiupanshan and Mt. Dafoshan at eastern Yunnan of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, geographically in the second step of the macroscopic Chinese topographic ladder, 1700-1950m a.s.l.. Mt. Wenbishan, the highest peak of Mt. Jiupanshan is about 2203m a.s.l.. The Big Shilin is about 1750m a.s.l., wheras the Naigu Shilin, 1820m a.s.l.. Main geomorphologic types are plateau hills, low mounts, depressions, basins, stone hillocks, stone forests, stone teeth field, lakes and river valleys. The stone forests and stone teeth are usually distributed in basins, depressions, along river valleys, or on the plateau surface (Fig.2).
